Frequently asked questions
MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB is an extended-release antibiotic medication containing Faropenem (300mg), used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It belongs to the 'penem' class of antibiotics and is often prescribed for infections that have not responded to other antibiotics.
What is MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB used for?
MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections. This includes infections of the upper and lower respiratory tracts (such as pneumonia and bronchitis), urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and gynecological infections. It is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
How does MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB work?
This medicine works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, which is vital for bacterial growth and survival. By preventing the bacteria from forming this protective covering, it leads to the death of the bacterial cells, effectively eliminating the infection.
What is the usual dosage?
The dosage and duration of MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB depend on the severity and type of infection, as well as your response to the medicine. It is usually taken once or twice daily with food to enhance absorption. Always swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, without crushing, breaking, or chewing it. It is crucial to complete the full course as prescribed by your doctor, even if you start feeling better, to prevent the infection from returning or developing antibiotic resistance.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and headache. Less common side effects may include dizziness, rash, and itching. Rare but serious side effects can involve severe allergic reactions, elevated liver enzymes, and blood cell abnormalities. If you experience persistent or severe symptoms like persistent diarrhea or blood in your stools, contact your doctor immediately.
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
There is limited information on the use of MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB during pregnancy, and animal studies have indicated potential harmful effects on the developing baby, making it potentially unsafe. Therefore, it is generally recommended not to use it unless specifically prescribed by your doctor, who will weigh the benefits against potential risks. For breastfeeding mothers, Faropenem passes into breastmilk. Your doctor will decide whether the medicine should be used while breastfeeding.
Can it be taken with other medications?
MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB can interact with certain medications. Concomitant use with imipenem and cilastatin sodium should be avoided. Its effectiveness can be decreased when taken with antiepileptic medicines like valproic acid, potentially leading to a recurrence of fits or epilepsy. Gout medications like probenecid can increase the levels of faropenem in the body. Antacids and iron supplements might reduce the absorption of MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB if taken within two hours. While there is no known interaction with alcohol, it's advisable to consult your physician if you regularly consume alcohol. Over-the-counter pain relievers are generally safe to take, but it's best to check with your doctor or pharmacist.
What precautions should be taken?
Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergy to faropenem or other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillin, cephalosporins, or carbapenems). Caution is advised if you have kidney or liver problems, a history of gastrointestinal disease, or an inherent tendency for allergic reactions. If you experience persistent diarrhea, your doctor may discontinue the treatment. It's also important to complete the entire prescribed course of treatment to prevent antibiotic resistance.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a dose of MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should it be stored?
MEROSURE-O ER 300 TAB should be stored below 25°C or 30°C in its original container. Keep it in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
