Description

MEFTAL FORTE CREAM (50 G) by BLUE CROSS LABORATORIES PVT. LTD.

Name

Brand Name: MEFTAL FORTE CREAM Common Name: Topical Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory Cream

Composition

MEFTAL FORTE CREAM contains a combination of active ingredients designed for targeted pain and inflammation relief:

  • Methyl Salicylate IP: 30% w/w - Acts as a counterirritant and NSAID, reducing pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin production and increasing blood flow.
  • Menthol IP: 10% w/w - Provides a cooling sensation, which helps to relieve pain and soothe irritated skin. It also acts as a counterirritant.
  • Camphor USP: 4% w/w - A mild pain reliever that provides a soothing, warming sensation and increases local blood flow to reduce pain and swelling.

Uses

MEFTAL FORTE CREAM is a topical medication primarily used for the symptomatic relief of mild to moderate pain and inflammation associated with various musculoskeletal conditions. It is prescribed for conditions such as:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Back pain and lumbago
  • Joint pain (including pain associated with arthritis and osteoarthritis)
  • Muscle aches and muscle cramps
  • Sports injuries
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Minor burns, sunburn, and insect bites (may help reduce swelling, redness, and itching)

Dosage and Administration

MEFTAL FORTE CREAM is for external topical administration only.

  • Typical Guidance: Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area of the skin.
  • Frequency: Gently rub it in until fully absorbed, usually two to three times daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Some sources suggest up to 3-4 times daily.
  • Preparation: Ensure the affected area is clean and dry before application.
  • Post-application: Always wash hands thoroughly after application. Avoid contact with water for at least 1 hour after or 30 minutes before application.

Side Effects

While generally well-tolerated, MEFTAL FORTE CREAM can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them.

  • Common Side Effects: Application site reactions such as burning, itching, irritation, redness, and rash; dryness or peeling of the skin.
  • Uncommon/Rare Side Effects: Allergic contact dermatitis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth), miliaria (heat rash), secondary infection. Rare cases of adrenal suppression, Cushing's syndrome, glaucoma, and cataracts have been reported with topical steroids, which are not present in this formulation, but salicylate intoxication (dizziness, tinnitus, headache, confusion) can occur with excessive topical application of methyl salicylate. Convulsions have been reported rarely.

Precautions

  • Hypersensitivity: Do not use if there is a known hypersensitivity to methyl salicylate, menthol, camphor, aspirin, or any component of the formulation.
  • Application Site: Avoid applying to broken, irritated, abraded, or infected skin, open lesions, or mucous membranes, and eyes.
  • Children: Not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Children suffering from flu, chickenpox, or fever should avoid using products containing salicylates due to the risk of Reye's syndrome. It is dangerous to place any camphor-containing product into the nostril of children.
  • External Use: For external use only. Do not apply over large areas of the body or cover with airtight dressings, bandages, or use with heating pads unless specifically directed by a doctor.
  • Drug Interactions: Topical salicylates may potentiate the anticoagulant effects of warfarin (increasing the chances of bleeding). Avoid concomitant use with other topical products on the same skin site without consulting a doctor.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and only when clearly needed and if benefits outweigh risks, after consulting a doctor.
  • Symptoms Worsen: Discontinue use and consult a doctor if skin irritation develops or if symptoms worsen or persist for more than 7 days.
  • Swallowing: This medication may be harmful if swallowed orally; seek immediate medical attention if accidentally ingested.

Storage

Store MEFTAL FORTE CREAM at room temperature (below 30°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Ensure the container is closed tightly when not in use.

Frequently asked questions

What is Meftal Forte Cream used for?

Meftal Forte Cream is a topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication primarily used for the temporary relief of pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal disorders. This includes minor joint or muscle pain, muscle cramps, shoulder aches, stiff neck, rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia, sprains, strains, lumbago, fibrositis, headaches, and knee pain.

How does Meftal Forte Cream work?

Meftal Forte Cream contains a combination of active ingredients: Methyl Salicylate, Menthol, and Camphor.

  • Methyl Salicylate acts as a topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent. It causes a rubefacient effect (reddening of the skin by dilating blood vessels), producing a soothing sensation of warmth and altering pain signals. It also helps reduce inflammation by inhibiting certain enzymes involved in pain pathways.
  • Menthol provides an initial cooling sensation followed by warmth. It works as a counterirritant, stimulating and then desensitizing nerve endings, which helps to distract from pain. Menthol also aids in muscle relaxation and enhances the absorption of other topical ingredients.
  • Camphor is a mild pain reliever and counterirritant that provides a warming sensation upon application. It stimulates nerve endings and improves local blood circulation, contributing to pain relief and reduction of irritation.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

For adults and children over 12 years of age, apply a thin layer of Meftal Forte Cream to the affected area of the skin. Gently rub it in thoroughly, not more than 3 to 4 times a day. Always wash your hands before and after applying the cream.

What are the possible side effects of Meftal Forte Cream?

Common side effects may include skin irritation, contact dermatitis, rash, itching, redness or swelling, or a burning or stinging sensation at the application site. If these effects persist or worsen, or if you experience a hypersensitivity/allergic reaction, discontinue use and consult a doctor. Rarely, if significantly absorbed or misused, systemic effects like headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or even convulsions (due to camphor) could occur.

Is Meftal Forte Cream safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: There is inadequate evidence regarding the safety of Meftal Forte Cream during human pregnancy. Methyl salicylate, one of its components, may pose risks to the unborn baby, particularly in the last trimester. It should be used only if clearly needed and when no safer alternative is available, and strictly under a doctor's advice.

Breastfeeding: It is not known whether the active ingredients pass into breast milk. Caution should be exercised, and it is advisable to consult your doctor before using this product while breastfeeding.

Can Meftal Forte Cream be taken with other medications?

Topical salicylates, like methyl salicylate in Meftal Forte Cream, may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding. Concomitant use with other topical products, including medications, sunscreens, lotions, moisturizers, and cosmetics, on the same skin site should be avoided due to the potential to alter local tolerability and absorption. While generally considered safe with oral pain relievers, it is always best to consult a doctor to confirm suitability.

What precautions should be taken while using Meftal Forte Cream?

  • Meftal Forte Cream is for external use only.
  • Do not apply it to open skin injuries, wounds, irritated skin, infections, or skin abrasions.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Do not apply over large areas of the body, and do not use with heating pads or occlusive (airtight) dressings.
  • This cream is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. It is dangerous to place any camphor-containing product into the nostrils of children.
  • Discontinue use if skin irritation, rash, or other adverse reactions develop, and consult a doctor.
  • It is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any of its components or with aspirin/salicylate idiosyncrasy.
  • If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention or call a poison control center.
  • Avoid applying the cream just before or after a bath, shower, or heavy exercise.

What happens if a dose is missed?

Meftal Forte Cream is typically applied as needed for pain relief within the recommended frequency. If you miss an application, you can apply it when you remember, as long as you do not exceed the recommended maximum applications per day (3-4 times). It is not a medication with a strict dosing schedule like some oral drugs.

How should Meftal Forte Cream be stored?

Store Meftal Forte Cream below 30°C (or at room temperature) in its original packaging, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use and always keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
