BILASHINE M ODT TABLET

Bilashine M ODT Tablet, manufactured by SUN PHARMA LABORATORIES LTD., is a combination medicine designed for the effective relief of various allergic conditions.

Composition

Bilashine M ODT Tablet contains two active ingredients:

  • Bilastine (20 mg): A modern, non-drowsy antihistamine that blocks H1 histamine receptors, reducing symptoms like itching, sneezing, runny nose, and hives.
  • Montelukast (10 mg): A leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks cysteinyl-leukotriene (CysLT1) receptors, thereby reducing inflammation, mucus production, and swelling in the airways and nasal passages.

Uses

This dual-action medication is prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Relieves nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, runny nose, and watery eyes caused by seasonal or perennial allergens.
  • Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (Hives): Helps reduce wheals, itching, and the frequency and intensity of flare-ups.
  • Allergy-Related Cough and Bronchial Irritation (Adjunct Therapy): May be used alongside standard asthma therapy when allergies worsen breathing discomfort or night cough, under medical supervision.

Dosage and Administration

The usual adult dose is one tablet once daily, or as prescribed by a doctor.

  • The ODT (Orally Disintegrating Tablet) should be dissolved in a glass of water before taking.
  • It is generally recommended to take the tablet on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after food, as food can affect the absorption of Bilastine.
  • Avoid taking it with fruit juices (e.g., grapefruit, orange, apple) as they can reduce Bilastine absorption.
  • Take it at the same time each day for consistent symptom control.
  • Do not crush or chew the tablet.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness or fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea
  • Cough or sore throat

Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., severe rash, swelling of the face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing, wheezing)
  • Severe skin reactions
  • Mood or behavior changes (e.g., agitation, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts)
  • Yellowing of eyes/skin or persistent vomiting (may indicate liver issues)

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not take if allergic to Bilastine, Montelukast, or any other components of the tablet.
  • Liver/Kidney Impairment: Inform your doctor about any existing liver or kidney problems, as dose adjustments or monitoring may be necessary.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Alcohol: Caution is advised with alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness or dizziness.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid these activities if affected.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, and herbal products being used. Avoid taking with indigestion remedies containing magnesium or aluminium within 2 hours, as they may reduce absorption.
  • Allergy Testing: Stop taking the medicine at least three days before any planned allergy testing, as it can affect test results.

Storage

Frequently asked questions

BILASHINE M ODT TABLET is a combination medicine containing Bilastine (20 mg) and Montelukast (10 mg), primarily used to treat various allergic conditions.

What is BILASHINE M ODT TABLET used for?

BILASHINE M ODT TABLET is used to relieve symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (hay fever), such as sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes, and nasal congestion. It is also prescribed for chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives), reducing wheals and itching. Additionally, it may be used as an adjunct to standard asthma therapy when allergies worsen breathing discomfort, under medical supervision.

How does BILASHINE M ODT TABLET work?

BILASHINE M ODT TABLET combines two active ingredients: Bilastine and Montelukast.

  • Bilastine is an anti-allergic medication that blocks the effects of histamine, a chemical messenger in the body responsible for allergy symptoms like itching, swelling, sneezing, and runny nose.
  • Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, which are chemical messengers that cause inflammation, mucus production, and narrowing of airways, thereby helping to prevent asthma symptoms and relieve allergic symptoms. Together, these components offer comprehensive and longer-lasting relief by targeting different pathways involved in allergic reactions.

What is the usual dosage for BILASHINE M ODT TABLET?

The usual adult dose is one tablet once daily, or as prescribed by your doctor. It should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably at least one hour before or two hours after food, with a full glass of water. Taking it at the same time each day, such as in the evening, may help with night symptoms. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

What are the possible side effects of BILASHINE M ODT TABLET?

Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, drowsiness or fatigue, dry mouth, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, cough, nasal irritation, sore throat, and skin rash. Uncommon or rare side effects can include palpitations, elevated liver enzymes, swelling of the face/lips, or severe skin reactions. Serious side effects, though rare, warrant immediate medical attention and include signs of an allergic reaction (wheezing, severe rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), severe mood/behavior changes (agitation, anxiety, sleep disturbances, depression, suicidal thoughts), yellowing of eyes/skin, or persistent vomiting.

Is BILASHINE M ODT TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Caution is advised regarding the use of BILASHINE M ODT TABLET during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Limited data are available, and the safety in pregnant women is unknown. Montelukast and Bilastine may pass into breast milk. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor to discuss the benefits and risks before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can BILASHINE M ODT TABLET be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medicines, vitamins, and herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

  • Fruit juices (e.g., grapefruit, orange, apple) can reduce the absorption and effectiveness of Bilastine, so avoid taking them around dosing.
  • Certain macrolide antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin) and antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole) may increase the levels of Bilastine in your blood.
  • Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum hydroxide may reduce the absorption of BILASHINE M ODT TABLET if taken at the same time; maintain a 2-hour gap.
  • Alcohol may increase drowsiness or dizziness; limit or avoid alcohol consumption.
  • Other medications like phenytoin, rifampicin, diltiazem, and certain calcium channel blockers may interact, requiring caution or dose adjustment.

What precautions should be taken while using BILASHINE M ODT TABLET?

  • Liver and Kidney Issues: Inform your doctor about any liver or kidney problems, as dose adjustment or monitoring may be required.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: While Bilastine is generally non-sedating, dizziness or drowsiness can occur. If affected, avoid driving or operating machinery.
  • Neuropsychiatric Effects: Montelukast has a Boxed Warning regarding rare mood or behavior changes (e.g., agitation, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts). Report any such changes immediately to your doctor.
  • Allergy Testing: Stop taking antihistamines like Bilashine M ODT TABLET at least three days before planned allergy testing, as it can affect the test results.
  • Asthma: It is not a rescue medicine for acute asthmatic attacks.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, ensuring you take it on an empty stomach. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should BILASHINE M ODT TABLET be stored?

Store BILASHINE M ODT TABLET in a cool and dry place, below 30°C, and protect it from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
