Frequently asked questions

VONOTOR 20 TAB by TORRENT PHARMACEUTICALS LTD is a medication containing Vonoprazan 20mg, primarily used to treat conditions related to excessive stomach acid production. Here are some frequently asked questions about this medicine:

1. What is Vonotor 20 Tablet used for?

Vonotor 20 Tablet is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as reflux esophagitis, gastric ulcers, and duodenal ulcers. It also helps prevent the recurrence of gastric or duodenal ulcers, especially when using low-dose aspirin or NSAIDs. Additionally, it's used in combination with antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, which can cause stomach ulcers. It can also alleviate symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) like heartburn and acid reflux.

2. How does Vonotor 20 Tablet work?

Vonotor 20 Tablet contains Vonoprazan, which belongs to a class of medications called potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs). It works by inhibiting the H+, K+-ATPase enzyme, also known as the proton pump, in the stomach's parietal cells. This action effectively reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach, thereby promoting the healing of ulcers and alleviating acid-related symptoms. Unlike some other acid suppressants, it has a faster onset of action and its effects are not influenced by meals.

3. What is the usual dosage for Vonotor 20 Tablet?

The dosage of Vonotor 20 Tablet depends on the condition being treated and should always be as advised by your doctor. For healing erosive esophagitis and relieving heartburn, a typical adult dose is 20 milligrams (mg) once a day for 8 weeks. For maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis, it might be 10 mg once a day for up to 6 months. For H. pylori infection, it's typically 20 mg taken twice a day, in combination with antibiotics, for 14 days. You can take it with or without food, but it should be swallowed whole with water; do not break, crush, or chew the tablet.

4. What are the possible side effects of Vonotor 20 Tablet?

Common side effects may include diarrhoea, bloating, stomach pain, nausea, indigestion, headache, high blood pressure, and urinary tract infections. More serious side effects, though less common, can include kidney problems, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, bone fractures, severe skin reactions, low vitamin B12 levels, low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), or fundic gland polyps (stomach growths). If you experience persistent or worsening side effects, consult your doctor.

5. Is Vonotor 20 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is limited safety information available regarding the use of Vonotor 20 Tablet during pregnancy. It is generally advised that pregnant women consult their doctor before taking this medicine to assess the potential risks and benefits. Similarly, it is not advised to breastfeed while taking Vonotor 20 Tablet, and you should consult your doctor for advice.

6. Can Vonotor 20 Tablet be taken with other medications?

Vonotor 20 Tablet can interact with certain other medications, which may affect their effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking. Specific interactions include certain HIV medications (like Rilpivirine, Nelfinavir, Atazanavir), iron salts, Erlotinib, Dasatinib, Nilotinib, Mycophenolate mofetil, Ketoconazole/Itraconazole, digoxin, certain diuretics, and blood thinners like clopidogrel.

7. What precautions should be taken while using Vonotor 20 Tablet?

Before taking Vonotor 20 Tablet, inform your doctor if you have any allergies to its ingredients or other medications. Also, disclose if you have a history of liver or kidney disorders, gastric malignancy, acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, osteopenia (bone mass loss), osteoporosis, or low levels of calcium, magnesium, or potassium. Avoid alcohol consumption and smoking as they can worsen acid-related symptoms and interfere with the medication's effectiveness. If the medication causes dizziness, avoid driving or operating machinery. Do not stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor. Long-term use may make it harder for your body to absorb vitamin B12 and can lead to low magnesium in the blood.

8. What happens if a dose of Vonotor 20 Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, the timing for taking a missed dose varies depending on the condition being treated:

  • For erosive esophagitis and heartburn: If you miss a dose and it is within 12 hours of your usual time, take it as soon as possible. If it's more than 12 hours after the missed dose, skip it and take your next dose at the regular time.
  • For H. pylori infection: If you miss a dose and it is within 4 hours of your usual time, take it as soon as possible. If it's more than 4 hours after the missed dose, skip it and take your next dose at the regular time. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

9. How should Vonotor 20 Tablet be stored?

Store Vonotor 20 Tablet in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. The ideal storage temperature is typically between 10°C to 25°C or below 30°C. Keep the medication out of the sight and reach of children.
