EPIDUO FORTE GEL

  • Name: Epiduo Forte Gel (Brand Name). The common name for the active ingredient combination is adapalene and benzoyl peroxide gel 0.3%/2.5%.

  • Composition:

    • Active Ingredients: Each gram of Epiduo Forte Gel contains Adapalene 0.3% (3 mg/g) and Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% (25 mg/g).
    • Inactive Ingredients: Include copolymer of acrylamide and sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate, disodium edetate, docusate sodium, glycerin, isohexadecane, poloxamer 124, polysorbate 80, propylene glycol, purified water, and sorbitan oleate.
  • Uses: Epiduo Forte Gel is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris (pimples) on the face, chest, and back. It is typically prescribed for moderate to severe acne, especially when comedones (blackheads, whiteheads), papules, and pustules are present. The gel combines two active ingredients that work synergistically:

    • Adapalene: A retinoid that helps normalize skin cell development, prevent pore blockages, promote skin renewal, and reduce inflammation.
    • Benzoyl Peroxide: Acts as an antimicrobial agent, killing acne-causing bacteria, and has a mild keratolytic effect, softening and peeling the outer layer of the skin to unblock pores.
  • Dosage and Administration:

    • For topical use only; not for oral, ophthalmic (eyes), or intravaginal use.
    • Apply a thin layer of Epiduo Forte Gel to the affected areas of the face and/or trunk once daily in the evening, after washing and drying the skin.
    • Use a pea-sized amount for each affected area of the face (e.g., forehead, chin, each cheek).
    • Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, nostrils, and mucous membranes.
    • Wash hands thoroughly immediately after application.
    • Cosmetics may be applied after the gel has dried.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Skin irritation, dryness, scaling, redness (erythema), stinging/burning sensation, itching, peeling skin, atopic dermatitis, and irritative contact dermatitis. These local skin reactions are often mild to moderate, typically peak during the first few weeks of treatment, and tend to subside with continued use.
    • Serious (less common): Severe allergic reactions (e.g., hives, rash, severe itching, swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, feeling faint, dizzy, or lightheaded), sunburn, blisters, and skin discoloration.
  • Precautions:

    • Sunlight Exposure: Minimize exposure to sunlight, including sunlamps and tanning beds. Use sunscreen (non-comedogenic, broad-spectrum, SPF 50+) and wear protective clothing (e.g., hats) when sun exposure cannot be avoided, as the gel can increase sensitivity to the sun.
    • Skin Condition: Do not apply the gel to cuts, abrasions, eczematous skin, or sunburned/irritated areas.
    • Other Products: Avoid concomitant use of other potentially irritating topical products such as medicated or abrasive soaps and cleansers, products with strong skin-drying effects (e.g., high alcohol concentrations, astringents, spices, or limes).
    • Hair Removal: Avoid waxing as a hair removal method on skin treated with Epiduo Forte Gel.
    • Bleaching: Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair and colored fabrics; exercise caution during application.
    • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Epiduo Forte Gel is generally not recommended during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs while using the gel, treatment should be discontinued, and a doctor should be informed. If breastfeeding, avoid applying the gel to the chest.
    • Age Restriction: Epiduo Forte is approved for use in individuals 12 years of age and older.
    • Irritation: Contains propylene glycol (E1520), which may cause skin irritation.
  • Storage:

    • Store in a cool, dry place at temperatures not exceeding 25°C (preferably between 20°C to 25°C).
    • Do not refrigerate.
    • Keep away from heat, direct light, and dampness.
    • Discard any unused portion 3 months after first opening or by the product's expiry date, whichever comes first.
    • Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently asked questions

EPIDUO FORTE GEL is a topical medication primarily used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It combines two active ingredients, adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, which work together to address various aspects of acne formation.

What is EPIDUO FORTE GEL used for?

EPIDUO FORTE GEL is used for the topical treatment of moderate to severe acne vulgaris, characterized by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), numerous papules, and pustules (pimples) on the face, chest, and back. It is typically prescribed for patients 12 years of age and older, especially when acne has not responded to other treatments.

How does EPIDUO FORTE GEL work?

EPIDUO FORTE GEL contains two active ingredients: adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. Adapalene is a retinoid that helps normalize skin cell development, prevents pores from becoming clogged, promotes skin renewal, and has anti-inflammatory effects. Benzoyl peroxide acts as an antibacterial agent, particularly against P. acnes bacteria, and also has exfoliating and keratolytic properties that soften and peel the outer layer of the skin, reducing excessive sebum (oil) excretion. Together, they help to unblock pores, reduce inflammation, and prevent new breakouts.

What is the usual dosage for EPIDUO FORTE GEL?

EPIDUO FORTE GEL should be applied as a thin film to the entire acne-affected areas of the face, chest, and back once daily in the evening. The skin should be clean and dry before application. A pea-sized amount is usually sufficient for each area of the face (e.g., forehead, chin, each cheek). It is for external use only and should not be used orally, ophthalmically, or intravaginally.

What are the possible side effects of EPIDUO FORTE GEL?

Common side effects include local cutaneous reactions such as skin irritation, dryness, redness (erythema), scaling, stinging, and burning sensation at the application site. These effects are most likely to occur during the first four weeks of treatment and usually lessen with continued use. Less common side effects can include sunburn, itching, or rash. Severe allergic reactions, though rare, can occur, including hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing.

Is EPIDUO FORTE GEL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

EPIDUO FORTE GEL should not be used during pregnancy or if you plan to become pregnant. While animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity at high systemic exposure, clinical experience in humans is limited. If an unexpected pregnancy occurs, treatment should be discontinued. During breastfeeding, EPIDUO FORTE GEL can be used, as systemic exposure to the active ingredients in the mother is negligible. However, to avoid contact exposure to the infant, application to the chest should be avoided.

Can EPIDUO FORTE GEL be taken with other medications?

No formal drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted. However, it is not recommended to use other topical acne therapies concurrently, especially those containing other retinoids or benzoyl peroxide, as this may cause a cumulative irritant effect. Cosmetics with desquamative, irritating, or drying effects should also be used with caution as they can increase irritation.

What precautions should be taken while using EPIDUO FORTE GEL?

Minimize exposure to sunlight, including sunlamps and tanning beds, as the gel can increase sensitivity to UV light. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing if sun exposure cannot be avoided. Avoid applying the gel to cuts, abrasions, eczematous, or sunburned skin. Ensure the gel does not come into contact with the eyes, mouth, nostrils, or mucous membranes. If it does, rinse immediately with warm water. The gel may bleach hair and colored fabrics, so wash hands thoroughly after application and allow it to dry completely before dressing. Avoid waxing on treated skin.

What happens if a dose of EPIDUO FORTE GEL is missed?

If a single dose is missed, continue with the usual application the following day. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the forgotten dose.

How should EPIDUO FORTE GEL be stored?

Store EPIDUO FORTE GEL at temperatures not exceeding 30°C (or below 25°C in some regions) and protect it from light and heat. Do not refrigerate. After first opening, the gel should be used within a period of 3 months, and any unused portion discarded after this time or by the product's expiry date, whichever comes first. Keep it out of reach of children.
