Description
DERIVA MS GEL 15 GM by GLENMARK PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.
Deriva MS Gel is a topical medication primarily used for the treatment of acne.
- Name: Deriva MS Gel (Common), Deriva MS Aqueous Gel (Brand)
- Composition: Each gram of Deriva MS Gel contains Adapalene 0.1% w/w. Adapalene is a retinoid compound, a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A.
- Uses: Deriva MS Gel is prescribed for the management of mild to moderate acne vulgaris in individuals 12 years and older. It works by reducing oil production, promoting the exfoliation of dead skin cells to unclog pores, and decreasing the formation of pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce the redness and irritation associated with acne.
- Dosage and Administration: Apply a thin layer of the gel to clean, dry affected skin once daily, preferably in the evening. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Avoid contact with sensitive areas such as the eyes, mouth, nose, or ears.
- Side Effects: Common side effects may include dry skin, irritation, redness, burning sensation, peeling, or itching at the application site. These effects are usually temporary and tend to improve with continued use as the skin adjusts. If severe skin irritation, swelling, blistering, or signs of an allergic reaction occur, seek immediate medical attention.
- Precautions:
- Inform your doctor if you have known allergies to Adapalene or any other medications.
- Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight, including tanning beds, as the gel can increase skin sensitivity to UV light. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
- Do not apply the gel on cuts, open wounds, scrapes, sunburned, windburned, chapped, dry, or irritated skin.
- Avoid simultaneous use of other topical acne products containing ingredients like erythromycin, benzoyl peroxide, or clindamycin, as this may lead to excessive irritation.
- Waxing should not be performed on skin treated with this gel due to an increased risk of skin erosions.
- Consult a doctor before use if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. If breastfeeding, avoid application to the chest area.
- Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
- Storage: Store Deriva MS Gel at room temperature below 30°C. Protect it from moisture, heat, and freezing, and keep it away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
What is DERIVA MS GEL used for?
DERIVA MS GEL is primarily used for the management of mild to moderate acne, commonly known as pimples, in individuals aged 12 years and older. It helps to reduce the occurrence of pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. The gel is also effective in managing excess oil production on the skin and reducing inflammation associated with acne.
How does DERIVA MS GEL work?
The active ingredient in DERIVA MS GEL is Adapalene (0.1% w/w), which is a retinoid, a form of vitamin A. It works by reducing the skin's oil (sebum) production and promoting the exfoliation of dead skin cells, thereby helping to unclog pores. Adapalene also possesses anti-inflammatory properties that reduce acne-related inflammation, redness, and soreness, preventing the formation of new acne lesions.
What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?
A thin layer of DERIVA MS GEL should be applied to clean and dry affected skin once daily, preferably at night before bedtime. It is crucial to follow your doctor's prescribed amount and frequency. Avoid applying the gel on sensitive areas like the eyes, mouth, nose, or ears, and wash your hands thoroughly before and after application.
What are the possible side effects of DERIVA MS GEL?
Common side effects include dry skin, irritation, redness (erythema), mild burning sensation, itching, and skin peeling or scaling. These effects are typically temporary and may be more noticeable during the initial weeks of treatment as your skin adjusts. In some cases, acne may appear to worsen before it improves. If you experience severe or persistent skin irritation, swelling, blistering, or signs of an allergic reaction, contact your doctor immediately.
Is DERIVA MS GEL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
DERIVA MS GEL should generally be avoided during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, as it may pose potential risks to the unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor. During breastfeeding, the gel can be used if clearly needed, but it should not be applied to the breast or areas near the breast to prevent accidental ingestion by a breastfed infant.
Can DERIVA MS GEL be taken with other medications?
DERIVA MS GEL is for topical use, so interactions with orally taken medications are less likely. However, you should avoid using other topical acne products containing ingredients like erythromycin, benzoyl peroxide, or clindamycin on the same skin area simultaneously. If a combination therapy is prescribed, DERIVA MS GEL is typically applied at night, and other products in the morning. Combining it with other retinoid medications may increase skin irritation. It's advisable to avoid cosmetic products that are harsh, excessively drying, or contain high levels of alcohol. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and skincare products you are currently using.
What precautions should be taken while using DERIVA MS GEL?
Avoid applying DERIVA MS GEL on cuts, open wounds, scrapes, sunburned, windburned, chapped, dry, or irritated skin. Minimize exposure to excessive sunlight, tanning beds, or artificial UV light, as the gel can increase skin sensitivity to the sun. It is recommended to use protective clothing and a high-SPF sunscreen when outdoors. Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing skin conditions like eczema or rosacea. Also, avoid waxing on skin areas treated with DERIVA MS GEL, as it can cause skin erosions. The gel may also bleach clothes and hair.
What happens if a dose of DERIVA MS GEL is missed?
If you miss an application of DERIVA MS GEL, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should DERIVA MS GEL be stored?
DERIVA MS GEL should be stored below 25°C (room temperature) in a cool, dark, and dry place. It should be protected from direct sunlight, excess heat, and moisture. Keep the gel out of reach and sight of children.
