Composition: Toplap Gel contains a eutectic mixture of two active local anesthetic ingredients:

  • Lidocaine (2.5% w/w)
  • Prilocaine (2.5% w/w)

Uses: Toplap Gel is a topical anesthetic primarily used to temporarily numb intact skin and outer genital areas, minimizing pain and discomfort during various medical and cosmetic procedures.

  • Needle Insertions: Such as vaccinations, blood draws, or IV insertions.
  • Minor Surgical Procedures: Including mole removal, skin biopsies, and other small excisions.
  • Dermatological Procedures: Laser treatments (e.g., hair removal, tattoo removal, skin resurfacing), chemical peels.
  • Dental Procedures: Fillings, extractions, and gum treatments.
  • Wound Management: Skin grafts and suturing of wounds.
  • Cosmetic Procedures: Skin peels or injectables.

Dosage and Administration: For external use only.

  1. Clean and thoroughly dry the affected skin area.
  2. Apply a thin, even layer of the gel, approximately 2-3 mm thick, to the intended area. Do not rub the gel into the skin.
  3. For optimal effect, the treated area should be covered with an occlusive dressing for a minimum of 2 hours before the scheduled procedure, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding dose and duration.

Side Effects: Common side effects are generally mild and temporary:

  • Burning sensation, irritation, itching, redness (erythema) at the application site.
  • Dryness, temporary paleness (blanching), or swelling of the skin. Less common side effects may include skin rash or hives (urticaria). Serious, though rare, side effects can occur if excessive amounts are absorbed:
  • Allergic reactions and severe skin irritation.
  • Systemic toxic effects such as uneven heartbeats, seizures, slowed breathing, respiratory failure, or coma.
  • Methemoglobinemia (bluish discoloration of skin/mucous membranes, shortness of breath, weakness).

Precautions:

  • Do not apply to broken, irritated, infected skin, open wounds (unless specifically directed by a doctor for leg ulcers), or near the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, rectum, or vagina.
  • If accidental contact with eyes occurs, rinse immediately and thoroughly with water.
  • Not recommended for infants under one month of age.
  • Use with caution in patients with blood disorders (e.g., methemoglobinemia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency), heart rhythm disorders, kidney, or liver impairment.
  • Inform your doctor about all current medications, including other local anesthetics, and certain anti-infectives, anti-epileptics, or heart medications, as interactions may occur.
  • Pregnancy: Generally considered safe for occasional use, but prolonged application over large areas should be avoided. Consult your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding: Components may pass into breast milk in small amounts. Use only if prescribed by a doctor.
  • This gel may cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if affected. Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose or duration, and avoid covering the treated area with a bandage unless advised by your doctor.

Storage:

  • Store Toplap Gel below 30°C (or between 10°C to 25°C), in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Do not refrigerate or freeze.
  • Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about TOPLAP GEL 10 G:

What is TOPLAP GEL used for?

TOPLAP GEL is a topical anesthetic primarily used to numb the skin before various medical and cosmetic procedures. These include needle insertions (like vaccinations or blood draws), minor surgical procedures (such as mole removal, skin biopsies, or suturing wounds), laser skin treatments (like hair removal or tattoo removal), and certain dental procedures or skin grafts. It can also be used for local analgesia on normal intact skin and genital mucous membranes.

How does TOPLAP GEL work?

TOPLAP GEL contains a combination of two local anesthetic medications: Lidocaine and Prilocaine. These active ingredients work by blocking sodium channels in the nerve cells of the applied area. This action stops the transmission of pain signals from the skin to the brain, resulting in temporary numbness and a reduction in the sensation of pain.

What is the usual dosage of TOPLAP GEL?

TOPLAP GEL is for external use only and should be applied exactly as directed by your doctor or healthcare provider. Generally, a thin, even layer (approximately 2-3 mm thick) is applied to the clean and dry intact skin where numbness is desired. For many procedures, the treated area may need to be covered with an occlusive dressing for a minimum of 2 hours before the scheduled treatment or surgery. Do not apply in larger or smaller quantities than recommended, and avoid rubbing it into the skin.

What are the possible side effects of TOPLAP GEL?

Common side effects at the application site include temporary redness (erythema), paleness, blanching (whitish discoloration of the skin), swelling, mild burning, itching, and irritation. Localized hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) may also occur. Most of these reactions are mild and typically resolve on their own. More serious, but rare, side effects can occur if too much medicine is absorbed, including dizziness, drowsiness, uneven heartbeats, seizures, slowed breathing, or even respiratory failure and coma. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe symptoms or persistent side effects.

Is TOPLAP GEL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: TOPLAP GEL is generally considered safe during pregnancy if prescribed by a doctor and used occasionally, as animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects on the developing baby. However, human studies are limited, and it's recommended to avoid using it on larger skin areas for prolonged durations. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Breastfeeding: Components of TOPLAP GEL can be absorbed through the skin and may pass into breast milk. While the quantity is usually considered too small to affect a breastfed baby, it should be used with caution and only after consulting your doctor, who will weigh the benefits against potential risks.

Can TOPLAP GEL be taken with other medications?

TOPLAP GEL may interact with other medicines. It should not be applied simultaneously with other topical medications on the same area. Inform your doctor about all your current medications, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins, as TOPLAP GEL can interact with certain anti-infectives, anti-epileptics, medicines for uneven heartbeats, and stomach acid reducers. Concurrent use with other local anesthetics or drugs known to cause methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder) can increase the risk of systemic toxic effects.

What precautions should be taken when using TOPLAP GEL?

TOPLAP GEL is for external use only. Avoid contact with your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, rectum, vagina, open wounds, broken, irritated, or swollen skin. It is not recommended for children under one month of age. Inform your doctor about any allergies you have, or existing medical conditions such as seizure disorders, kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, methemoglobinemia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or atopic dermatitis. Do not exceed the recommended dose or cover the treated skin with a bandage unless advised by your doctor. Since it may cause dizziness or drowsiness, exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. If accidental contact with eyes or mouth occurs, rinse thoroughly with water immediately. A patch test may be performed for first-time users.

What happens if a dose of TOPLAP GEL is missed?

Since TOPLAP GEL is typically applied before and during a medical procedure, the likelihood of missing a dose is very low. If you are applying it at home as part of a prescribed regimen and miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double amount to make up for a missed dose.

How should TOPLAP GEL be stored?

Store TOPLAP GEL in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat, at temperatures below 30°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use and always ensure it is out of the sight and reach of children and pets. After opening for the first time, use the gel within six months.
