Description
DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM
DIPSALIC F Ointment, manufactured by MSD PHARMACEUTICALS PVT LTD, is a topical medication formulated to manage various inflammatory and hyperkeratotic skin conditions.
Composition
DIPSALIC F Ointment contains two active ingredients:
- Clobetasol Propionate (0.05% w/w): A potent corticosteroid that works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) responsible for making the skin red, swollen, and itchy.
- Salicylic Acid (3% w/w): A keratolytic agent that softens and loosens dry, scaly, or thickened skin by breaking down keratin clumps, removing dead skin cells, and aiding in skin softening. It also enhances the absorption of clobetasol into the skin.
Uses
DIPSALIC F Ointment is primarily prescribed for the treatment of:
- Eczema: A skin condition characterized by inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough skin patches.
- Psoriasis: A disorder where skin cells multiply rapidly, leading to bumpy red patches covered with white scales. It also helps alleviate redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort associated with other skin conditions like dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, ichthyosis vulgaris, and allergic reactions.
Dosage and Administration
Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected areas of the skin, typically two or three times daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
- Wash hands thoroughly before and after applying the medicine, unless the hands are the treated area.
- For external use only.
- Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings (e.g., bandages) unless specifically advised by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
- Avoid applying on the face, groin, or underarms.
- Use for the prescribed duration, which is generally short-term (e.g., two weeks, or up to four weeks for scalp psoriasis).
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Skin peeling or thinning.
- Burning, itching, irritation, or redness at the application site.
Serious side effects, though rare, may include:
- Salicylism (with prolonged use), characterized by ringing in the ears, nausea, and vomiting.
- Blurred vision, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, increased thirst or urination, irritability, or unusual tiredness/weakness (discontinue and consult a doctor if experienced).
- Perioral dermatitis, striae (stretch marks), and dermal/epidermal atrophy.
Precautions
- Do not use if you are allergic to Clobetasol, Salicylic Acid, or any other ingredients in the ointment.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, mucous membranes, open wounds, sunburned, or windburned skin.
- Not recommended for children under 12 years of age unless specifically advised by a doctor.
- Exercise caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding; use only if clearly necessary and under medical supervision.
- Avoid concurrent use with other topical corticosteroid-containing medicines.
- Use with caution if taking ritonavir (for HIV) or itraconazole (for fungal infections), as it may increase the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor if you are taking aspirin.
- Prolonged use can increase the risk of serious side effects.
Storage
Store DIPSALIC F Ointment below 30°C (or 25°C). Keep it protected from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
Frequently asked questions
What is DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM used for?
DIPSALIC F OINTMENT 30 GM is used to treat various inflammatory and scaling skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It helps relieve symptoms like redness, itching, swelling, and irritation. The ointment is also indicated for seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp and ichthyosis vulgaris, which causes dry and scaly skin.
How does DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM work?
This medicine combines two active ingredients: Clobetasol propionate (a potent corticosteroid) and Salicylic acid (a keratolytic agent). Clobetasol propionate works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response at the molecular level, preventing the release of inflammatory substances. Salicylic acid helps by softening and peeling the top layer of dead skin cells, which aids in the penetration of Clobetasol and helps remove dry, scaly skin.
What is the usual dosage for DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM?
The ointment is for external use only. A thin layer should be applied to the affected area as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. The exact dosage and duration of treatment will depend on your age, the severity of the condition, and your response to the treatment.
What are the possible side effects of DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM?
Common side effects at the application site may include itching, irritation, burning, redness, skin peeling, and thinning of the skin. If you experience any severe side effects or worsening of symptoms, you should consult your doctor.
Is DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Caution is advised during pregnancy. DIPSALIC F OINTMENT should only be used if considered absolutely necessary by your doctor, as animal studies have shown potential harmful effects on the developing baby. Avoid applying it to large skin areas or for prolonged durations.
Breastfeeding: It is generally considered safe for use by breastfeeding mothers if prescribed by a doctor. However, caution should be exercised, and it should not be applied to breast areas that might come into contact with the infant or to large areas of the body for prolonged periods.
Can DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM be taken with other medications?
DIPSALIC F OINTMENT is less likely to interact with orally taken medicines. However, you should avoid using other topical corticosteroids simultaneously. Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are using, including herbal remedies and over-the-counter products. Caution is advised if you are taking ritonavir (for HIV infection) or itraconazole (for fungal infections), as it may increase the risk of side effects.
What precautions should be taken while using DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM?
This medicine is for external use only. Wash your hands before and after application. Avoid applying the ointment to your face, groin, underarms, broken skin, or open wounds unless specifically directed by your doctor. Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings unless advised by a healthcare professional. Prolonged use should be avoided to minimize the risk of skin thinning and other steroid-related side effects. Inform your doctor if you have conditions like diabetes, blood vessel, kidney, or liver disease, or Cushing's syndrome, as the ointment may worsen these conditions or affect blood sugar levels. It is not generally recommended for children under 12 years of age without a doctor's guidance.
What happens if a dose of DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM is missed?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should DIPSALIC F OINT 30 GM be stored?
DIPSALIC F OINTMENT should be stored in its original container in a clean, dry place, protected from moisture, sunlight, and heat, ideally below 30°C. Keep the tube tightly closed after use and ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.
