Frequently asked questions
JARDIANCE MET 12.5 MG /1000 MG TABLET (10 TAB) FAQs
What is JARDIANCE MET used for?
JARDIANCE MET 12.5 mg/1000 mg Tablet is used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is prescribed along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control, particularly in individuals whose diabetes isn't adequately controlled by metformin alone or metformin combined with other diabetes medicines. This medication can also reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, heart failure, and other cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. It also helps in reducing the risk of kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, and loss of limbs, and can slow the progression of kidney disease.
How does JARDIANCE MET work?
JARDIANCE MET contains two active ingredients: empagliflozin and metformin. Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which prevents the reabsorption of glucose back into the bloodstream and instead causes excess glucose to be excreted through the urine. Metformin is a biguanide that reduces the production of glucose in the liver, decreases the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and improves the body's sensitivity to insulin. Together, these mechanisms more effectively lower blood glucose levels.
What is the usual dosage of JARDIANCE MET?
The dosage of JARDIANCE MET is individualized by your doctor based on your current regimen, effectiveness, and tolerability. It is typically taken once or twice daily with meals to help reduce stomach upset. It's important to take this medicine at the same time each day for optimal benefits. The maximum recommended daily dose is 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of JARDIANCE MET can include urinary tract infections (UTIs), genital fungal (yeast) infections, increased urination frequency, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, joint pain, and loss of appetite. Drinking plenty of fluids can help prevent dehydration. More serious but rare side effects include ketoacidosis (a buildup of acid in the body), severe UTIs (including kidney infections), dehydration, and low blood sugar (especially when taken with other diabetes medicines like insulin or sulfonylureas).
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
JARDIANCE MET is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to animal studies showing potential for kidney damage in fetuses. If you are pregnant or might become pregnant, discuss suitable treatment options with your doctor, as uncontrolled diabetes during pregnancy can pose significant risks to both mother and fetus. Taking JARDIANCE MET while breastfeeding is also not recommended, as empagliflozin may pass into breast milk, and its effect on a breastfed infant is unknown but could potentially affect kidney development.
Can it be taken with other medications?
JARDIANCE MET can interact with other medications. Taking it with other antidiabetic medicines, especially insulin or insulin secretagogues (like sulfonylureas and glinides), can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Diuretics ("water pills") taken with JARDIANCE MET may increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure due to increased urination. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to manage potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken?
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking JARDIANCE MET, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis (a serious medical condition) and may also cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Patients with kidney or liver problems should use this medication with caution, and it may not be recommended for those with severe kidney impairment. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly as advised by your doctor. Also, be aware of signs of dehydration and maintain good hygiene to prevent genital fungal infections. Inform your doctor if you have a history of urinary tract infections, as JARDIANCE MET can increase this risk.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a dose of JARDIANCE MET, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
How should it be stored?
JARDIANCE MET tablets should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of the reach of children and pets. The temperature should ideally remain below 30°C.
