Frequently asked questions
VITARESP FX Suspension 60 ML by Alembic Pharmaceuticals Limited is a combination medicine containing Montelukast and Fexofenadine, primarily used to treat various allergic conditions.
Here are some frequently asked questions about VITARESP FX Suspension:
What is VITARESP FX Suspension used for?
VITARESP FX Suspension is primarily used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis (seasonal or perennial), which includes sneezing, runny nose, congestion, stuffy nose, and watery eyes. It also helps manage asthma symptoms and chronic urticaria (hives), providing relief from itching, redness, and swelling. This suspension is indicated for allergic rhinitis in children aged 2-11 years, and for asthma and uncomplicated skin reactions of chronic idiopathic urticaria in children aged 6 months to 11 years.
How does VITARESP FX Suspension work?
This medicine combines two active ingredients: Fexofenadine and Montelukast. Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that works by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body responsible for triggering allergic symptoms. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks chemicals called leukotrienes, which cause inflammation, swelling, and increased mucus production in the airways and nose. By acting on these different pathways, the combination provides comprehensive relief from allergy and asthma symptoms.
What is the usual dosage for VITARESP FX Suspension?
The dosage of VITARESP FX Suspension should be strictly followed as prescribed by a doctor, as it varies based on the patient's age, medical condition, and response to treatment. For specific formulations like Vitaresp FX Suspension, the composition may be Montelukast 4mg/5ml and Fexofenadine 60mg/5ml or Montelukast 4mg/5ml and Fexofenadine 30mg/5ml. It is generally taken orally. This suspension is for children aged 6 months to 11 years, depending on the condition being treated. Do not take more than the prescribed dose.
What are the possible side effects of VITARESP FX Suspension?
Common side effects can include drowsiness, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, and fever. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time. If any side effects persist or worsen, it is important to consult a doctor. Serious side effects, though rare, can include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Montelukast has also been associated with neuropsychiatric events like agitation and depression.
Is VITARESP FX Suspension safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Fexofenadine is generally not recommended during pregnancy due to limited data, though some studies suggest it does not increase the chance of birth defects. Montelukast should only be used during pregnancy if clearly essential, as determined by a doctor. It is crucial to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Breastfeeding: Small amounts of fexofenadine pass into breast milk, which is generally considered too low to cause problems for the baby. It is not known if montelukast is excreted in human milk, so caution is advised. Always consult your doctor before taking this medication while breastfeeding.
Can VITARESP FX Suspension be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.
- Antacids: Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium should not be taken within 2 hours of VITARESP FX Suspension, as they can reduce its effectiveness.
- Fruit Juices: Avoid consuming fruit juices like orange, apple, or grapefruit with this medicine, as they may decrease its efficacy.
- Other Medications: Interactions can occur with certain drugs used for high lipid levels (e.g., gemfibrozil), antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin, erythromycin), anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, phenobarbital), and antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole).
What precautions should be taken while using VITARESP FX Suspension?
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness and other side effects.
- Driving/Operating Machinery: This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these effects.
- Acute Asthma Attacks: VITARESP FX Suspension is not meant for treating sudden, acute asthma attacks. Always carry a rescue inhaler for such situations.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if your child has any existing medical conditions, especially kidney, liver, or heart problems, seizures, or phenylketonuria.
- Allergy Tests: It is generally advised to stop taking this medication a few days before any allergy skin tests, as it can affect the test results.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If a dose of VITARESP FX Suspension is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should VITARESP FX Suspension be stored?
Store VITARESP FX Suspension in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep it in its original container, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children.
