Description
CEFADROX DRY SYP 250 MG (30 ML)
Name
- Common Name: Cefadroxil
- Brand Name: Cefadrox Dry Syp 250 MG
Composition
Each 5ml of the reconstituted suspension contains Cefadroxil Monohydrate equivalent to Cefadroxil Anhydrous 250mg. Cefadroxil is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
Uses
Cefadrox Dry Syp 250 MG is an antibiotic prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections in the body. It is effective against infections of the:
- Throat and Upper Respiratory Tract: Such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and bronchitis.
- Skin and Soft Tissues: Including abscesses, furunculosis, impetigo, erysipelas, pyoderma, and lymphadenitis.
- Urinary Tract: Such as cystitis and pyelonephritis, caused by susceptible bacteria like E. coli, P. mirabilis, and Klebsiella species.
This medicine works by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis, which is essential for bacteria to survive, thus killing the infection-causing bacteria. It is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
Dosage and Administration
Cefadrox Dry Syp 250 MG is typically administered orally. The dry powder needs to be reconstituted with sterile water as directed before use.
- General Guidance: It can be taken with or without food; however, taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.
- Preparation: Shake the oral liquid well before each use. Measure the medicine accurately using a marked measuring spoon or oral syringe.
- Dosing Interval: It is usually taken every 12 or 24 hours, preferably at around the same times each day.
- Duration: It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by the doctor, even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent the infection from returning or developing antibiotic resistance.
- Pediatric Use: The syrup is primarily given to children from 1 month to 11 years of age. It is not recommended for infants below 1 month due to a lack of safety data. For children, a common recommendation is 30 mg/kg/day, given as a single dose or two divided doses. For infections like beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, a minimum 10-day course is often recommended.
Side Effects
While Cefadrox Dry Syp 250 MG is generally well-tolerated, some side effects can occur:
- Common Side Effects: Diarrhea (which can sometimes be severe), stomach pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, headache, weakness, and vaginal itching or discharge.
- Serious Side Effects: Seek immediate medical attention if any of these occur:
- Severe allergic reactions: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
- Severe stomach pain or cramps, or bloody/watery stools (which could indicate Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, even months after treatment).
- Signs of liver problems: yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark-colored urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, or severe abdominal pain.
- Signs of kidney problems: little or no urination, swelling in the feet or ankles.
- Unusual bleeding or bruising, fever, chills, body aches, flu-like symptoms.
- Seizures.
- Severe skin reactions: blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin.
Precautions
- Allergies: Inform your doctor if you or your child has any known allergies to cefadroxil, penicillins, or other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any other allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
- Medical History: Discuss any existing medical conditions, especially kidney disease, liver problems, or a history of intestinal disease (colitis or severe diarrhea).
- Diarrhea: If severe or persistent diarrhea occurs, do not use anti-diarrhea medications without consulting a doctor, as they may worsen the condition.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products being taken. Cefadroxil may interact with live bacterial vaccines (like typhoid vaccine), probenecid, furosemide, and aminoglycosides.
- Long-term Use: Prolonged or repeated use of antibiotics can sometimes lead to secondary infections, such as oral thrush or vaginal yeast infections.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: While generally considered safe, consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- Diabetes: This medication may cause false-positive results with certain diabetic urine testing products (cupric sulfate-type).
Storage
- Unreconstituted Powder: Store the dry powder in a closed container at room temperature, away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.
- Reconstituted Suspension: Once mixed, store the liquid suspension in the refrigerator.
- Discard: Dispose of any unused reconstituted medicine after 14 days.
- Safety: Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
CEFADROX DRY SYP 250 MG by ARISTO PHARMACEUTICALS PRIVATE LIMITED contains Cefadroxil, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections.
What is CEFADROX DRY SYP used for?
CEFADROX DRY SYP is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in children. These infections often include those of the throat (such as pharyngitis and tonsillitis), upper respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues (like impetigo), and the urinary tract (such as cystitis or pyelonephritis). It is effective against susceptible Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria.
How does CEFADROX DRY SYP work?
The active ingredient, Cefadroxil, works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) inside the bacterial cell, which disrupts the final step in building the protective cell wall, leading to the death of the bacteria.
What is the usual dosage for CEFADROX DRY SYP?
For children, the typical dosage is 30 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. This can be given as a single daily dose or divided into two doses (every 12 hours). For certain infections like streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, it's often administered for at least 10 days. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding the specific dose and duration.
What are the possible side effects of CEFADROX DRY SYP?
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Skin rashes and genital itching may also occur. Serious but less common side effects can include severe allergic reactions (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat) and severe watery or bloody diarrhea, which could be a sign of a serious intestinal condition (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea). If any severe side effects occur, seek immediate medical attention.
Is CEFADROX DRY SYP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Cefadroxil is generally considered safe during pregnancy and has been classified as Pregnancy Category B, meaning animal studies have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are limited, so it should only be used if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.
Breastfeeding: Cefadroxil passes into breast milk in low levels, which are generally not expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants. It is considered acceptable for use in nursing mothers, but it's advisable to consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Infants should be monitored for potential gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea or thrush.
Can CEFADROX DRY SYP be taken with other medications?
Cefadroxil can interact with other medications. It may reduce the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine and BCG vaccine). It can also increase the anticoagulant effects of medications like warfarin. Taking it with certain other antibiotics (e.g., aminoglycosides) or NSAIDs may increase the risk of kidney-related side effects. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription, nonprescription, vitamin, nutritional supplement, and herbal products you or your child are taking.
What precautions should be taken while using CEFADROX DRY SYP?
Before starting this medication, inform your doctor if you or your child have a history of allergies to penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any other allergies. Use with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal diseases, particularly colitis, or kidney problems, as dosage adjustments may be necessary. It is crucial to complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. Prolonged use of antibiotics can sometimes lead to new infections, such as oral thrush or vaginal yeast infections. Cefadroxil may cause false-positive results in certain urine sugar tests and Coombs tests.
What happens if a dose of CEFADROX DRY SYP is missed?
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should CEFADROX DRY SYP be stored?
The dry powder should be stored in a closed container at room temperature (10-30°C), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Once reconstituted with water, the liquid suspension should be stored in the refrigerator and typically discarded after 7 to 14 days, depending on specific product instructions. Do not freeze the liquid suspension. Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
