    • Brand Name: PERMITE CREAM 30GM
    • Common Name: Permethrin Cream 5% w/w
  • Composition:

    • Active Ingredient: Permethrin 5% w/w Permethrin is a synthetic chemical belonging to the pyrethroid family, which works by paralyzing and killing mites, lice, and their eggs by affecting their nervous system.
  • Uses: PERMITE CREAM is primarily used for the treatment of infestations caused by parasites. It is prescribed for:

    • Scabies: A skin infection caused by mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that infest and irritate the skin.
    • Pediculosis (Head Lice Infestation): To eliminate head lice that attach to the scalp and hair.
    • It also targets eggs and nits of these parasites.
  • Dosage and Administration: PERMITE CREAM is for external use only.

    • For Scabies: Apply a thin layer uniformly to the entire body, from the head to the soles of the feet, excluding the face and scalp unless advised by a doctor or if those areas are affected. Leave the cream on for 8 to 14 hours, then wash it off thoroughly with soap and water. A single application is generally sufficient, but a second application may be needed after at least 7 days if live mites or new lesions are present.
    • For Head Lice: Apply to the scalp and hair, leave on for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and comb out lice and eggs.
    • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or open wounds. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
    • Children below 2 months of age should use Permethrin Cream only under medical supervision. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use.
  • Side Effects: Common side effects are usually mild and transient:

    • Redness, rash
    • Burning sensation
    • Stinging sensation
    • Itching (pruritus), which may persist for up to four weeks after treatment due to a reaction to killed mites.
    • Numbness or tingling of the skin. Serious side effects, though rare, may include severe allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, breathing difficulty) or infected/pus-filled areas of the skin. Consult a doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.
  • Precautions:

    • Do not use if allergic to permethrin, chrysanthemums, other pyrethroids, or any components of the cream.
    • Inform your doctor if you have other skin diseases or chronic illnesses, or asthma, as permethrin may worsen symptoms.
    • Carers applying permethrin are advised to wear gloves.
    • Treated fabrics (clothing, bedding) that have been in contact with this product burn more easily and are a serious fire hazard; avoid smoking or going near naked flames.
    • Avoid applying to broken, irritated, or severely inflamed skin unless advised by a doctor.
    • No significant drug-food interactions have been found, but consult your doctor for specific advice.
  • Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, away from sunlight. Keep out of sight and reach of children. The product should be stored below 30°C and away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about PERMITE CREAM 30GM:

What is PERMITE CREAM used for?

PERMITE CREAM 30GM is primarily used to treat infestations of scabies, a skin condition caused by mites, and also head lice and crab lice infestations.

How does PERMITE CREAM work?

The active ingredient in PERMITE CREAM is Permethrin, a synthetic chemical belonging to the pyrethroid family. It works by targeting the nervous system of mites and lice, disrupting their nerve cell membranes, which leads to paralysis and ultimately kills the parasites and their eggs.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

For scabies, typically a single application is sufficient. Adults and children over 2 years should apply the cream thoroughly to all skin surfaces from the neck down to the soles of the feet. Infants (2 months to 23 months) also require application to the scalp, hairline, temples, and forehead. The cream should be left on for 8 to 14 hours (usually overnight) and then washed off by showering or bathing. If live mites are still observed 14 days after the first treatment, a second application may be necessary. For lice, a 1% formulation is usually used and applied to damp hair, left for 10 minutes, and then rinsed. PERMITE CREAM is a 5% formulation, primarily for scabies.

What are the possible side effects of PERMITE CREAM?

Common side effects include mild and temporary skin irritation, such as itching, redness, burning, stinging, tingling, or dryness at the application site. These symptoms can also be a reaction to the dead mites and may persist for a few weeks after treatment. Rare but more serious side effects could include allergic reactions like skin rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and trouble breathing, which require immediate medical attention.

Is PERMITE CREAM safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Permethrin 5% cream is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy (FDA Pregnancy Category B) and is often the treatment of choice for scabies in pregnant women. For breastfeeding, Permethrin is also considered compatible due to its low systemic absorption and rapid metabolism, which results in minimal excretion in breast milk. However, it is advisable to consult your doctor, and if applying to the breast area, it should be washed off before breastfeeding and reapplied after feeding.

Can PERMITE CREAM be taken with other medications?

Interactions with other systemic medications are generally not expected due to very low systemic absorption of permethrin. However, avoid using other skin products or corticosteroids on the affected area without consulting your doctor, as corticosteroids might worsen scabies infestations by interfering with the body's natural defense.

What precautions should be taken when using PERMITE CREAM?

Do not apply the cream to broken skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes (eyes, inside the nose or throat, genital region). If accidental contact with eyes occurs, rinse thoroughly with cool tap water. Individuals with a known allergy to permethrin, other pyrethroids, pyrethrins, or chrysanthemums should not use this cream. Carers applying the cream to another person should wear plastic or disposable gloves.

What happens if a dose is missed?

PERMITE CREAM for scabies is typically a single application. If a second application is deemed necessary by your doctor after a certain period (e.g., 7-14 days) and you miss that scheduled application, apply it as soon as you remember. Do not apply a double quantity to make up for a forgotten application.

How should PERMITE CREAM be stored?

Store PERMITE CREAM in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of reach of children. It should be stored at room temperature. Do not use the medicine past its expiry date.
