CEFOLAC 100 ORAL SUSPENSION 30 ML

CEFOLAC 100 ORAL SUSPENSION is an antibiotic manufactured by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD..

  • Composition Each 5ml of the oral suspension contains Cefixime 100 mg (as Cefixime Trihydrate). Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.

  • Uses CEFOLAC 100 ORAL SUSPENSION is primarily used in children aged between 6 months and 12 years for the management of various bacterial infections. It is effective against:

    • Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis).
    • Urinary Tract Infections (e.g., cystitis, kidney infections).
    • Skin and Soft-Tissue Infections.
    • Typhoid Fever.
    • Certain sexually transmitted diseases, and infections of the bone, blood, abdomen, and genital tract. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to bacterial cell death. This antibiotic is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
  • Dosage and Administration This medicine should be administered orally as advised by a physician. It can be taken with or without food. For dry syrup, sterile water is added to the powder and shaken vigorously to prepare the suspension. The dosage and duration of therapy depend on the child's age, body weight, and severity of the infection. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to ensure adequate infection control and prevent recurrence or worsening of the infection.

  • Side Effects Common side effects may include:

    • Nausea, vomiting.
    • Stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, or bloating/wind.
    • Headache, dizziness.
    • Itchiness of the genital (or vaginal) areas. Serious side effects, though rare, require immediate medical attention and include signs of severe allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips/throat/tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing), unusual bleeding or bruising, severe uncontrollable watery diarrhea, fever, yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine, unusual tiredness, new signs of infection, signs of kidney problems, mental/mood changes (such as confusion), and seizures (in overdose).
  • Precautions

    • Inform your doctor if your child has a history of allergic reactions to Cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics, including Penicillins, as it is contraindicated in such cases.
    • Use with caution in children with kidney or liver problems; dosage adjustments may be necessary.
    • Before administration, inform the doctor about any stomach or bowel problems.
    • Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to be less effective for future infections.
  • Storage Store the suspension at room temperature (15-25ºC or below 30ºC). Protect it from light and moisture. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Once reconstituted, the prepared suspension can be stored at room temperature for a maximum of 14 days.

Frequently asked questions

Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension is an antibiotic medication manufactured by Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The active ingredient is Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections, especially in children.

What is Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension used for?

Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. These include infections of the ear (otitis media), nose, throat (tonsillitis, pharyngitis), sinuses (sinusitis), chest and lungs (bronchitis, pneumonia), and the urinary system (e.g., cystitis, kidney infections). It is also used to manage gastrointestinal infections, typhoid fever, and uncomplicated gonorrhea. It is important to note that Cefolac 100 will not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension work?

Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension contains Cefixime, which is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by killing bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of their cell walls. This disruption weakens and destroys the bacterial cell wall, leading to bacterial cell death. Cefixime is also stable in the presence of certain beta-lactamase enzymes, which helps it remain effective against some bacteria resistant to other antibiotics.

What is the usual dosage for Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension?

For children aged 6 months to 12 years, the recommended dose is usually 8 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. This can be given as a single daily dose or divided into two doses (4 mg/kg every 12 hours). For children weighing more than 50 kg or older than 10 years, the adult dose of 200-400 mg daily may be appropriate, depending on the severity of the infection. It's crucial to measure liquid medicine using a special measuring spoon or syringe. The exact dosage and duration will be determined by a doctor based on the patient's medical condition and response to treatment. It is important to complete the full prescribed course of antibiotics, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning or becoming harder to treat.

What are the possible side effects of Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension?

Common side effects include diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, dyspepsia, and flatulence. More serious, though less common, side effects can include severe watery or bloody diarrhea (which may indicate Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea), severe allergic reactions (like rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing), fever, unusual bleeding or bruising, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), and changes in the amount of urine. If any severe side effects occur, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Is Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Cefixime appears to be relatively safe during pregnancy, but it should only be used if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It is unknown if Cefixime passes into breast milk. It is advised to consult a doctor before breastfeeding while taking this medication, and temporary discontinuation of nursing may be recommended.

Can Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension be taken with other medications?

Cefixime can interact with certain medications. For instance, it may enhance the effects of "blood thinners" (anticoagulants like warfarin), potentially leading to prolonged prothrombin time and an increased risk of bleeding. It may also increase levels of carbamazepine. Cefixime can cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) to not work effectively, so it's important to inform healthcare professionals about cefixime use before vaccinations. Antacids may decrease the absorption of cefixime, so it's best to separate doses by at least 2 hours. Oral contraceptives may also be less effective when taken with cefixime. It is important to inform your doctor about all medications, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products, before starting Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension.

What precautions should be taken?

Patients with a history of allergy to penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics should use Cefolac 100 with caution due to the possibility of cross-hypersensitivity. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, as dosage adjustments may be necessary. Cefixime can cause diarrhea, which in some cases can be severe; do not take anti-diarrhea medication without consulting your doctor first. Prolonged use may lead to new fungal infections like oral thrush or vaginal yeast infections. This medication may also interfere with certain lab tests, such as urine glucose tests, possibly causing false results.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If a dose of Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double or extra dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Cefolac 100 Oral Suspension be stored?

The reconstituted oral suspension can be stored at room temperature (between 2°C and 25°C or 36°F and 77°F) or in the refrigerator. It should be discarded after 14 days. Keep the bottle tightly closed and shake it well before each use. Keep all medications out of the sight and reach of children.
