DREZ 10% SOLUTION 100ML by STEDMAN PHARMACEUTICALS

Name

Brand Name: DREZ 10% Solution. Common Name: Povidone-Iodine Topical Solution 10% w/v.

Composition

DREZ 10% Solution contains Povidone-Iodine IP 10.0% w/v, which corresponds to 1.0% w/v available Iodine.

Uses

DREZ 10% Solution is a topical antiseptic and disinfectant primarily used to treat and prevent skin infections in minor wounds. It is effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. Specific uses include:

  • Treating and preventing infections in minor burns, cuts, lacerations (deep cuts), and abrasions (scrapes).
  • Preventing infections in ulcers.
  • Disinfecting the skin before and after surgical procedures to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Aiding in the healing process by maintaining a clean wound environment and reducing bacterial contamination.

Dosage and Administration

This medicine is for external use only.

  • Ensure the affected area is clean and dry before application.
  • Apply a small amount of the solution to the affected area using a cotton swab or gauze.
  • Allow it to air dry, and if necessary, cover the area with a sterile bandage.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after applying the solution.
  • The typical frequency can be up to three times daily, with a course duration of around 7 days, or as advised by a physician. Do not use for longer than 1 week without consulting a doctor.

Side Effects

Common side effects at the application site may include:

  • Redness or inflammation.
  • Peeling, dryness, or irritation.
  • Mild itching or burning sensation.

These usually resolve during treatment. More serious, though rare, side effects with excessive or prolonged use over large areas, or on severe wounds, can include allergic skin reactions, thyroid dysfunction due to iodine absorption, or, rarely, metabolic acidosis, high blood sodium, and kidney problems. If side effects persist or worsen, medical advice should be sought.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to povidone-iodine or any of its ingredients.
  • Thyroid Disorders: Use with caution if you have thyroid problems (e.g., overactive thyroid, goiter, Hashimoto's disease) as it may affect thyroid function due to potential iodine absorption.
  • Specific Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or are taking lithium.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Avoid applying to the breast area while breastfeeding.
  • Application Site: Avoid contact with eyes and nose. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Avoid prolonged use over large skin areas, and do not use on deep wounds, large areas of broken skin, or severe burns without medical consultation, as it may increase the risk of systemic absorption of iodine.
  • Jewelry: DREZ 10% Solution can permanently stain gold jewelry; remove all jewelry before use.
  • Children: Use in children only if advised and supervised by a doctor.

Storage

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of sight and reach of children. The recommended storage temperature is typically below 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

DREZ 10% SOLUTION by STEDMAN PHARMACEUTICALS is an antiseptic solution containing Povidone-Iodine 10%. It is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of infections in minor wounds, cuts, burns, and abrasions, and also for skin disinfection before surgical procedures.

Here are some frequently asked questions about DREZ 10% SOLUTION:

What is DREZ 10% SOLUTION used for?

DREZ 10% SOLUTION is used as an antiseptic to prevent and treat infections in minor cuts, wounds, burns, lacerations (deep cuts), and abrasions (scrapes). It is also used to sanitize the skin before surgical procedures.

How does DREZ 10% SOLUTION work?

The active ingredient, Povidone-Iodine, is an antiseptic and disinfectant that works by killing harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. It achieves this by gradually releasing iodine, which disrupts the cellular structure and metabolic processes of microbes, leading to their death.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

DREZ 10% SOLUTION is for external use only. Apply the solution full strength as often as needed, usually once or twice daily, or up to three times a day, on the affected area after cleaning and drying it. Allow it to air dry, and it may be covered with a sterile bandage if necessary.

What are the possible side effects of DREZ 10% SOLUTION?

Common side effects may include local swelling, irritation, itching, redness, peeling skin, or dryness at the application site. These side effects are usually mild and often resolve over time. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions (e.g., wheezing, difficulty breathing, hives, swelling) or thyroid dysfunction due to iodine absorption can occur, especially with prolonged or excessive use on large areas.

Is DREZ 10% SOLUTION safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Povidone-iodine is generally not recommended for regular use during pregnancy due to the possibility of iodine absorption that could affect the fetal thyroid. During breastfeeding, its use can increase iodine levels in breast milk and potentially cause transient hypothyroidism in breastfed infants. If use is necessary, it should be minimized to the smallest possible surface areas, with short contact times, and avoiding repeated applications. Consult a healthcare provider before using this medicine if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can DREZ 10% SOLUTION be taken with other medications?

Avoid using DREZ 10% SOLUTION with other antiseptics like chlorhexidine due to incompatibility. It can also have severe interactions with allogeneic cultured keratinocytes/fibroblasts in bovine collagen and serious interactions with collagenase. Inform your doctor if you are taking lithium, as iodine may increase the possibility of hypothyroidism. Do not use it with hydrogen peroxide.

What precautions should be taken when using DREZ 10% SOLUTION?

DREZ 10% SOLUTION is for external use only; do not swallow it. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and nose; if accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use it on deep puncture wounds, animal bites, serious burns, or over large areas of the body without consulting a doctor. Remove gold jewelry before use, as it can cause permanent staining. Exercise caution if you have thyroid problems, liver, or kidney disease. Do not use before or after certain thyroid scans or treatments.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double or extra dose.

How should DREZ 10% SOLUTION be stored?

Store DREZ 10% SOLUTION at room temperature, ideally between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep the container tightly closed and in a well-ventilated place, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Discard any unused medication after the expiration date.
