Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion:

What is Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion used for?

Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion is primarily used for the short-term management of constipation. It is beneficial in conditions associated with constipation such as piles, anal fissures, cardiovascular disorders, hernia, and for bowel clearance before medical procedures like endoscopy or radioscopy. It can also help relieve sour stomach and heartburn. Some information also suggests its use in managing hepatic encephalopathy by lowering ammonia levels in liver disorders.

How does Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion work?

This emulsion contains a combination of three active ingredients: Liquid Paraffin, Milk of Magnesia, and Sodium Picosulphate. Liquid paraffin acts as a lubricant, softening the stools and aiding their smooth passage. Milk of Magnesia is an osmotic laxative that works by drawing water into the intestines, which softens the stools and increases their volume. Sodium Picosulphate is a stimulant laxative that increases the movement of the intestines and prevents water absorption in the colon, further promoting bowel evacuation.

What is the usual dosage of Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion?

The dosage of Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion should be taken as advised by your physician, as it depends on your age, body weight, and medical condition. Typically, adults may be prescribed 15-30ml (1-2 tablespoons) two to three times daily, or a usual adult dose ranging from 30-45ml daily, divided into three doses. It is often recommended to take it at bedtime or at a fixed time daily. Always shake the bottle well before use. It is not recommended for use in children.

What are the possible side effects of Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion?

Common side effects can include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, very dry mouth, extreme thirst, rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps, dizziness, and general gastrointestinal disturbances or discomfort. If these side effects worsen or persist, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Is Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and only after consulting with your doctor. There are no sufficient and well-controlled studies regarding its use in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Your doctor will assess the benefits and risks for you and your baby.

Can Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medicines, you are taking or have taken. Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours of using Lactihep Plus Emulsion as they may reduce its effectiveness. Some antibiotics, such as tetracycline and fluoroquinolones, might have reduced absorption if taken with this emulsion. Certain diuretics may also lower potassium levels when used concurrently. It is also advisable to avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medicine as it may worsen certain side effects or further burden the liver.

What precautions should be taken when using Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion?

Do not use Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion if you have kidney disease, intestinal obstruction, undiagnosed abdominal pain, severe dehydration, inflammatory bowel disease, or appendicitis. It should not be used continuously for more than a week to prevent potential dependency on it for bowel movements. While taking this medicine, it is crucial to drink plenty of fluids (at least 6-8 glasses of water daily) to prevent dehydration. If you notice sudden changes in bowel habits lasting over two weeks, contact your doctor.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion be stored?

Store Lactihep Plus Oral Emulsion at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in its original container or pack, tightly closed. Ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.
