    • Panic Disorder: Including those with or without agoraphobia, characterized by unexpected panic attacks.
    • Epilepsy/Seizures: Used alone or as an adjunct in various seizure types such as Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (petit mal variant), akinetic, myoclonic, and absence seizures unresponsive to other treatments.
    • Anxiety Disorder: Helps reduce symptoms of excessive anxiety and worry.
    • Involuntary Muscle Spasms.
    • May also be used for restless leg syndrome.
  • Dosage and Administration The dosage is individualized based on the patient's condition and should be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor, typically with or without food, at the same time each day.

    • Adults with Panic Disorder: Typically begins with 0.25 mg twice daily, increasing to 1 mg per day as needed after three days.
    • Pediatric Patients: Dosing is weight-based, starting from 0.01-0.03 mg/kg/day in divided doses.
    • Elderly Patients: May require lower initial dosages due to increased sensitivity. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided.
  • Side Effects Common side effects often relate to central nervous system depression and may include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, memory problems, confusion, and depression. Other reported effects include ataxia, blurred vision, nervousness, and muscle pain. Serious side effects can include suicidal thoughts or behaviors, and severe withdrawal symptoms if stopped suddenly.

  • Precautions Lonazep 0.5 Tablet has a high potential for habit formation and should not be stopped suddenly due to the risk of withdrawal symptoms, which can include seizures, hallucinations, and anxiety. Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants should be avoided as they can intensify drowsiness, lead to breathing problems, or even coma. Caution is advised in patients with respiratory disorders, liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, sleep apnea, depression, or a history of drug abuse. It is generally not recommended during pregnancy (Category D) and breastfeeding should be avoided. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

  • Storage Store Lonazep 0.5 Tablet in a cool, dry place at room temperature (20-25°C, with excursions between 15-30°C), away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Lonazep 0.5 Tablet, containing clonazepam, is a medication primarily used to manage neurological and anxiety-related conditions. Here are some frequently asked questions about this medicine.

What is Lonazep 0.5 Tablet used for?

Lonazep 0.5 Tablet is used to treat epilepsy (seizures or fits), panic disorder, and involuntary muscle spasms. It may also be prescribed for restless leg syndrome and can help relieve anxiety and tension due to stress.

How does Lonazep 0.5 Tablet work?

Lonazep 0.5 Tablet belongs to a class of medicines called benzodiazepines. Its active ingredient, clonazepam, works by increasing the activity of a calming chemical messenger in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This action helps to suppress excessive and abnormal nerve activity, calming the brain and nerves, which in turn prevents or reduces the intensity of seizures, relieves anxiety, and relaxes tense muscles.

What is the usual dosage of Lonazep 0.5 Tablet?

The dose and duration of Lonazep 0.5 Tablet are determined by your doctor based on your medical condition, age, and response to treatment. For adults with seizure disorders, an initial dose often starts at 0.5 mg three times per day, which may be adjusted up to a maximum of 20 mg per day. For panic disorder, adults typically start with 0.25 mg twice daily, and the dose can be increased after three days to 1 mg per day as needed, usually not exceeding 4 mg per day. In children, the dose is typically based on body weight and age. It is crucial to take this medicine exactly as prescribed and not to exceed the recommended dose.

What are the possible side effects of Lonazep 0.5 Tablet?

Common side effects of Lonazep 0.5 Tablet include drowsiness, fatigue, sleepiness, dizziness, memory impairment, depression, and difficulty speaking. Less common side effects can include blurred vision, confusion, irritability, decreased sex drive, lack of motivation, and muscle pain. In some cases, more serious side effects like behavioral changes, suicidal thoughts, or increased frequency of seizures may occur. If these side effects persist or worsen, it's important to consult your doctor.

Is Lonazep 0.5 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Lonazep 0.5 Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the fetus and has been associated with serious symptoms and malformations. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, consult your doctor, who will weigh the potential risks and benefits. During breastfeeding, Lonazep 0.5 Tablet is generally not recommended as it can pass into breast milk and may cause drowsiness or difficulty breathing in the infant. Your doctor may suggest a safer alternative or advise careful monitoring of the baby if its use is necessary.

Can Lonazep 0.5 Tablet be taken with other medications?

Taking Lonazep 0.5 Tablet with certain other medications can lead to interactions. It should be used with caution or avoided with other central nervous system (CNS) depressants, including alcohol, opioid pain medications (like morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine), sedatives (like diphenhydramine), and other benzodiazepines, as this can increase the risk of severe drowsiness, breathing problems, coma, and even death. Certain anticonvulsant medications (like carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital) may decrease the effectiveness of Lonazep, while some antifungal medications (like ketoconazole, itraconazole) can increase its levels. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken with Lonazep 0.5 Tablet?

Lonazep 0.5 Tablet has a high potential for habit formation and dependence, so it should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually for a short duration. Do not stop taking it suddenly, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms like aggressive behavior, blurred vision, increased seizure frequency, anxiety, agitation, and flu-like symptoms. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery, as this medicine can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Alcohol consumption is strongly not recommended as it can significantly increase dizziness, drowsiness, and may lead to life-threatening side effects. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially liver or kidney problems, respiratory disorders (like asthma), glaucoma, or a history of depression or suicidal thoughts.

What happens if a dose of Lonazep 0.5 Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of Lonazep 0.5 Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Taking the medication consistently as prescribed is important for managing your condition.

How should Lonazep 0.5 Tablet be stored?

Lonazep 0.5 Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Ensure that any unused or expired medicine is disposed of properly.
