-
Name:
- Common Name: Ascoril Tablet, Ascoril Plus Tablet
- Brand Name: ASCORIL TAB by GLENMARK-MAJESTA CARE DIV.
-
Composition: ASCORIL Tablet is a combination medicine containing three active ingredients:
- Guaiphenesin (100mg) - Expectorant
- Terbutaline (2.5mg) - Bronchodilator
- Bromhexine (8mg) - Mucolytic agent (cough/sputum thinner)
-
Uses: ASCORIL Tablet is primarily used to treat wet/productive cough associated with mucus. It is prescribed for various respiratory conditions, including bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and emphysema. It works by loosening thick mucus, making it easier to cough out, relaxing airway muscles to improve airflow, and thinning/loosening phlegm in the lungs, windpipe, and nose. It also helps relieve symptoms like chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing.
-
Dosage and Administration: Take ASCORIL Tablet as prescribed by your doctor. The dose and duration depend on your medical condition and response to the medicine. It can be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. Adults typically take 1 tablet two to three times daily. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not chew, crush, or break it. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
-
Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort/pain, sweating, dizziness, headache, skin rash, tremor, bloating, indigestion, and increased heart rate. Most of these are temporary and often resolve on their own. Serious side effects, though rare, warrant immediate medical consultation.
-
Precautions: Inform your doctor if you are allergic to any components of ASCORIL Tablet. Exercise caution if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have pre-existing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), stomach ulcers/bleeding, phenylketonuria, liver or kidney problems, heart problems, or convulsive disorders. This medicine may cause drowsiness, so avoid driving or activities requiring mental focus until you know how it affects you. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can worsen drowsiness.
-
Storage: Store ASCORIL Tablet in a cool and dry place, below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in its original container, tightly closed, and out of the sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
Ascoril Tablet, manufactured by Glenmark, is a medication primarily used to relieve cough associated with mucus. It combines three active ingredients—Guaifenesin, Terbutaline, and Bromhexine—to help clear the airways and ease breathing.
Here are some frequently asked questions about Ascoril Tablet:
1. What is Ascoril Tablet used for?
Ascoril Tablet is primarily used to treat a wet or productive cough that is associated with various respiratory conditions such as bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and emphysema. It helps to clear irritants and mucus from the airways, alleviating symptoms like chest tightness, breathing difficulty, wheezing, and coughing.
2. How does Ascoril Tablet work?
Ascoril Tablet contains a combination of three active ingredients:
- Guaifenesin (Expectorant): Works by increasing the volume of fluid in the airways, which reduces the stickiness of mucus and helps in its removal.
- Terbutaline (Bronchodilator): Relaxes the muscles and widens the airways, making breathing easier.
- Bromhexine (Mucolytic Agent): Thins and loosens phlegm (mucus) in the lungs, windpipe, and nose, making it easier to cough out. Together, these components make breathing easier by facilitating the expulsion of mucus.
3. What is the usual dosage for Ascoril Tablet?
The dosage of Ascoril Tablet should always be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will determine how often you should take the medicine based on your medical condition. It's important to follow their instructions regarding dose and duration.
4. What are the possible side effects of Ascoril Tablet?
Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach discomfort or pain, sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, skin rash, tremor, and an increased heart rate. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve on their own over time. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
5. Is Ascoril Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During Pregnancy: It is advised to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy before using Ascoril Tablet. While limited studies exist in humans, animal studies have shown potential harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits against potential risks. During Breastfeeding: It is generally not recommended for breastfeeding mothers as components of Ascoril Tablet may pass into breast milk and could adversely affect the baby. Always consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
6. Can Ascoril Tablet be taken with other medications?
Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including supplements, as some may interact with Ascoril Tablet. Specific interactions include steroid medicines (like Prednisolone), xanthine medicines (like Theophylline), beta-blocker medicines (like Atenolol), and diuretics (like Frusemide). It should not be used with other cough medicines that suppress the cough reflex (e.g., codeine), as this can prevent the expulsion of diluted sputum. Bromhexine, one of its components, can also promote the penetration of certain antibiotics into pulmonary tissue.
7. What precautions should be taken while using Ascoril Tablet?
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have diabetes (monitor blood glucose), fits/epilepsy, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, stomach ulcers (or a history of them), phenylketonuria, kidney problems, liver problems, or heart problems, as these conditions may require caution or dose adjustment.
- Allergies: Do not take Ascoril Tablet if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
- Activities: This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Ascoril Tablet, as it can worsen drowsiness and other side effects.
- Duration: Do not use for more than 4-5 days without medical advice. If your cough persists for more than a week, recurs, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache, consult your doctor.
8. What happens if a dose of Ascoril Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of Ascoril Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
9. How should Ascoril Tablet be stored?
Store Ascoril Tablet in its original container in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date and dispose of any unused medication safely according to local guidelines.
