Frequently asked questions

What is TROPAN 2.5 TAB used for?

TROPAN 2.5 TAB (Oxybutynin chloride) is primarily used to treat symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB). These symptoms can include frequent urination, an urgent need to urinate, and involuntary leakage of urine (urge incontinence). It also helps manage bladder dysfunction caused by nerve disorders and can be used to treat nighttime bed-wetting in children over 5 years old when other treatments haven't been effective.

How does TROPAN 2.5 TAB work?

TROPAN 2.5 TAB contains Oxybutynin chloride, which is an anticholinergic and antispasmodic medicine. It works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, which is responsible for bladder muscle contractions. By relaxing the smooth muscles of the urinary bladder, it helps reduce sudden muscle spasms, delays the urge to empty the bladder, and increases the bladder's capacity to hold urine. This leads to better control over urination and reduces the frequency and urgency of needing to urinate.

What is the usual dosage for TROPAN 2.5 TAB?

The dosage of TROPAN 2.5 TAB is determined by your doctor based on your medical condition and response to the medication. For adults and children aged 12 and over, a common starting dose for immediate-release oxybutynin (the active ingredient) is 5mg, taken 2 or 3 times a day, which may be increased up to a maximum of 5mg four times a day. For children aged 5 to 11 years, the usual starting dose is 2.5mg taken 2 or 3 times a day, which can be increased to 5mg taken 2 to 3 times a day. Elderly patients (over 65) may start with a lower dose, such as 2.5mg twice daily, due to increased sensitivity to side effects. It's advised to take it on an empty stomach at least an hour before a meal, or with or immediately after a meal to reduce stomach upset. The tablet should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing.

What are the possible side effects of TROPAN 2.5 TAB?

Common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, sleepiness, dry eyes, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and facial flushing. To help manage dry mouth, you can try sugar-free gum or candy and drink plenty of water.

Less common or serious side effects can include difficulty fully emptying the bladder (urinary retention), confusion, hallucinations, rapid or irregular heartbeat, severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat), and heatstroke due to decreased sweating. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Is TROPAN 2.5 TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

TROPAN 2.5 TAB should be used with caution during pregnancy, and it is generally considered safe, but it's essential to consult your doctor. For breastfeeding women, the safety of Oxybutynin is not fully established, as it may pass into breast milk. Your doctor will weigh the benefits against the risks to decide if it is appropriate for you.

Can TROPAN 2.5 TAB be taken with other medications?

TROPAN 2.5 TAB can interact with several medications. Inform your doctor about all medicines, herbal products, and over-the-counter drugs you are taking. Known interactions include:

  • Opioid Pain Relievers (e.g., codeine, hydrocodone): May increase drowsiness and difficulty urinating.
  • Anti-Parkinson Medications (e.g., amantadine, levodopa, biperiden): May have altered effects or increased side effects.
  • Antihistamines (e.g., cetirizine, diphenhydramine): Can enhance anticholinergic effects, potentially worsening dry mouth and blurred vision.
  • Medicines for brain disorders (e.g., phenothiazines, butyrophenones, clozapine).
  • Certain antibiotics and antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin).
  • Medicines for nausea and vomiting (e.g., metoclopramide, domperidone): TROPAN 2.5 TAB can oppose their effects.
  • CNS depressants (including alcohol): Can increase drowsiness and dizziness.

What precautions should be taken?

  • Alcohol: Avoid or limit alcohol consumption as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
  • Driving & Operating Machinery: This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Heat Prostration: TROPAN 2.5 TAB can make it harder for your body to cool down by reducing sweating, increasing the risk of heatstroke in high temperatures or during strenuous activity. Avoid extreme heat and strenuous activities.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma (increased eye pressure), heart conditions (e.g., heart failure, arrhythmias), liver or kidney problems, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), enlarged prostate, gastrointestinal issues (e.g., ulcerative colitis, gastric retention, severe constipation), or autonomic neuropathy. TROPAN 2.5 TAB is not recommended for children under 5 years of age.
  • Oral Hygiene: Dry mouth is a common side effect and can increase the risk of tooth decay or fungal infections. Maintain good oral hygiene and use sugar-free gum or saliva substitutes if necessary.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should TROPAN 2.5 TAB be stored?

Store TROPAN 2.5 TAB at room temperature, ideally below 30°C (86°F). Keep it away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Always keep the medicine out of reach and sight of children and pets, and ensure it is used before its expiry date.
