Description
LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG (10 TAB) by TORRENT PHARMACEUTICALS LTD
LISTRIL PLUS is an antihypertensive medication manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd..
Composition
Each uncoated tablet contains:
- Lisinopril I.P. equivalent to Lisinopril anhydrous 5 mg
- Hydrochlorothiazide I.P. 12.5 mg
Lisinopril is an Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that works by relaxing and widening blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic ("water pill") that increases urine output, helping to remove excess fluid and certain electrolytes from the body. Both components work together to lower blood pressure.
Uses
LISTRIL PLUS is primarily used for the treatment and management of:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure), especially in patients stabilized on individual components.
- It helps reduce the risk of heart-related complications such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure in hypertensive patients.
- It may also be used to treat fluid retention (oedema) and kidney problems due to Type II diabetes in patients with high blood pressure.
Dosage and Administration
The usual dosage is one tablet administered once daily, preferably at approximately the same time each day, often in the morning to avoid frequent nighttime urination. It can be taken with or without food. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablet; swallow it whole with a glass of water. If the desired therapeutic effect is not achieved in 2 to 4 weeks, the dose may be increased, as advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness
- Cough
- Headache
- Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, or constipation
- Taste change
- Decreased blood pressure (hypotension)
- Electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium, low sodium, high calcium)
- Increased blood lipid levels, hyperuricemia
Serious side effects, though less common, can include angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), severe kidney problems, liver disease (jaundice), pancreatitis, and certain allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
Precautions
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: LISTRIL PLUS is unsafe during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to definite evidence of risk to the developing baby and is generally not recommended during breastfeeding.
- Renal Impairment: Use with caution in patients with kidney disease; it is not suitable for initial therapy in those with renal insufficiency and is ineffective at creatinine clearance values of 30 ml/min or below.
- Liver Disease: Use with caution in patients with liver disease.
- Diabetes: Can affect blood sugar levels, requiring regular monitoring.
- Electrolyte Imbalance: Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels is recommended.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may further lower blood pressure and increase dizziness.
- Driving: May cause dizziness or blurry vision; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medications, especially NSAIDs, potassium supplements, lithium, aliskiren, and other diuretics, as interactions can occur.
- Contraindications: Not advisable for patients with hypersensitivity to any active ingredients, a history of angioedema, anuria, severe heart failure, or aortic stenosis.

Frequently asked questions
What is LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG used for?
LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG is primarily used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It helps to relax blood vessels and remove excess water and salt from the body, which collectively lowers blood pressure. By effectively controlling hypertension, it also helps to reduce the risk of serious heart-related complications such as stroke, heart attack, and heart failure. The medicine may also be used to manage fluid retention (edema) and kidney problems associated with Type II diabetes in hypertensive patients.
How does LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG work?
LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG contains two active ingredients: Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide, which work together to lower blood pressure.
- Lisinopril is an Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by blocking the production of a substance called angiotensin II, which normally causes blood vessels to narrow. By preventing its formation, Lisinopril allows blood vessels to relax and widen, improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure.
- Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic, commonly known as a "water pill." It helps the kidneys eliminate excess water and salt (sodium chloride) from the body, thereby reducing the volume of fluid in the blood vessels and contributing to lower blood pressure.
What is the usual dosage of LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG?
The typical dosage for adults is one tablet once daily. It is usually advised to take the tablet around the same time each day, preferably in the morning to avoid frequent urination at night. LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG can be taken with or without food. Your doctor may adjust your dose based on your medical condition and response to the medicine, but the dose generally should not exceed 80 mg lisinopril and 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide per day. Do not alter your dosage without consulting your doctor.
What are the possible side effects of LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG?
Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, cough, nausea, taste changes, stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion, fatigue, weakness, decreased blood pressure, increased blood lipid levels, and electrolyte imbalance.
More serious side effects, though less common, require immediate medical attention. These include swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, or lower legs (angioedema), hoarseness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, sore throat, chills, muscle pain, cramps or weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe thirst, restlessness, confusion, seizures, a decrease in urination, chest pain, and rapid or irregular heartbeat.
Is LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During Pregnancy: LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, as it may cause harm to the developing fetus. It is contraindicated in these stages of pregnancy. It is crucial to consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive.
During Breastfeeding: Use of LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG is not recommended while breastfeeding. The medicine may pass into breast milk, and its effects on the nursing infant are not fully known. Alternative treatments with better established safety profiles are generally preferred.
Can LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG be taken with other medications?
LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG can interact with several other medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins.
- Antihypertensives: Taking it with other blood pressure-lowering medications may intensify their effect, potentially leading to very low blood pressure.
- NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen): These medicines may decrease the blood pressure-lowering effect of LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG.
- Insulin or oral diabetes medications: LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG can affect blood sugar levels, requiring close monitoring.
- Potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium: These should be avoided as they can significantly increase blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia).
- Aliskiren: Concurrent use is contraindicated, especially in patients with diabetes or kidney impairment.
- Other interactions: Discuss with your doctor if you are taking lithium, Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), certain anesthetic medicinal products, tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics (which may further lower blood pressure), Racecadotril (used for diarrhea), or Vildagliptin (used for diabetes).
What precautions should be taken while on LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG?
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medicine as it can further lower your blood pressure and increase side effects like dizziness or lightheadedness.
- Kidney or Liver Conditions: Use with caution if you have a history of kidney or liver problems, as dose adjustments may be needed. It is not recommended for severe kidney impairment.
- Diabetes: Close monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential as this medicine can affect them.
- Dizziness/Drowsiness: LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG may cause dizziness, sleepiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. To reduce dizziness, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which can be caused by the diuretic component.
- Diet: Limit sodium (salt) intake and avoid foods rich in potassium (like bananas, potatoes, spinach) to prevent high potassium levels in the blood.
- Regular Monitoring: Your doctor may recommend regular monitoring of your blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels (especially potassium) during treatment.
- Angioedema: Inform your doctor if you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat).
- Stopping Treatment: Do not stop taking the medicine on your own, even if you feel well, as high blood pressure often has no symptoms and stopping abruptly can worsen your condition.
- Children: The safety and efficacy of this medicine in children have not been established.
What happens if a dose of LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG is missed?
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG be stored?
Store LISTRIL PLUS 5/12.5 MG tablets at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Keep the medicine protected from light and moisture, and ensure it is kept out of reach of children.
