Description

DUTAS 0.5 MG CAPSULE by DR. REDDYS LABORATORIES LTD.

Name: Dutas Capsule (Brand Name), Dutasteride (Common Name)

Composition: Each soft gelatin capsule contains 0.5 mg of Dutasteride as its active ingredient.

Uses: Dutas Capsule is primarily prescribed for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in men, a condition characterized by an enlarged prostate gland. It helps alleviate associated urinary symptoms such as difficulty in passing urine, frequent urination, weak stream, and the urgent need to urinate. By shrinking the prostate, it reduces the risk of acute urinary retention and the potential need for prostate surgery.

Dosage and Administration: The recommended dose is one 0.5 mg capsule taken orally once daily. Capsules should be swallowed whole with water, either with or without food, and should not be chewed, crushed, or opened. It may take 3 to 6 months to observe the full beneficial effects of the medication.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include erectile dysfunction, decreased libido (low sexual desire), ejaculation disorder, breast enlargement (gynecomastia), and breast tenderness or pain. Serious but rare side effects can include allergic reactions (skin rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, breathing difficulties) and an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

Precautions: Dutas Capsule is for use in men only. Pregnant women should not handle or come into contact with leaking capsules, as Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may cause harm to a male fetus. The contact area should be washed immediately with soap and water if exposure occurs. Patients with liver problems should use this medicine with caution, and liver function tests may be advised. It is advised not to donate blood while taking Dutas Capsule and for at least six months after stopping the medication, as donated blood may contain enough of the medicine to cause birth defects in a pregnant recipient. Dutas Capsule can interfere with Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests; inform your doctor if you are undergoing such tests. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may increase side effects.

Storage: Store Dutas Capsule in a cool, dry place, typically below 25°C or 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing at high temperatures as capsules may leak or change color. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule, containing dutasteride, is a medication primarily prescribed for men to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. It helps alleviate urinary symptoms associated with BPH, such as difficulty urinating, frequent or urgent urination, and a weak urine stream.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule:

What is Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule used for?

Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule is used in men to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland. This condition can lead to bothersome urinary symptoms, including difficulty in passing urine, frequent urination (especially at night), and a weak or interrupted urine flow. It can also reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (sudden inability to urinate) and the need for prostate-related surgery.

How does Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule work?

Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule contains dutasteride, which belongs to a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It works by blocking two types of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that plays a major role in the growth of the prostate gland. By reducing DHT levels, Dutas helps to shrink the enlarged prostate, improving urinary flow and relieving BPH symptoms.

What is the usual dosage?

The usual recommended dosage of Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule for adults with benign prostatic hyperplasia is one 0.5 mg capsule taken orally once daily. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, either with or without food, and should not be chewed, crushed, or opened. It may take several months (typically 3 to 6 months or more) to observe the full beneficial effects of the medication.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule may include decreased sexual desire (libido), erectile dysfunction (impotence), ejaculation disorder (e.g., decreased semen volume), and breast enlargement or tenderness in males (gynecomastia). More serious, though rare, side effects can include severe allergic reactions (such as rash, swelling of the face/lips, or difficulty breathing) and an increased risk of developing high-grade prostate cancer. If you experience persistent or severe side effects, or notice breast lumps or nipple discharge, consult your doctor.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule is not for use by women and is contraindicated during pregnancy. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not handle or come into contact with the capsules, as dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may cause birth defects in a developing male fetus. If accidental contact occurs, the affected area should be washed immediately with soap and water. It is also not recommended for use in breastfeeding women, as it is unknown if it passes into breast milk.

Can it be taken with other medications?

Dutas can interact with various medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions. For example, concomitant use with certain antifungal medications (like itraconazole or ketoconazole) or HIV protease inhibitors can increase the levels of dutasteride in your blood, potentially leading to an increased risk of side effects. Alpha-blockers are often used in conjunction with dutasteride to manage BPH, and dutasteride is not significantly affected by coadministration with alpha-blockers like tamsulosin.

What precautions should be taken?

Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule should only be used by men. Individuals with a history of liver disease should use this medicine with caution, as it is metabolized in the liver, and dose adjustments or close monitoring may be required. Men taking Dutas should not donate blood while on the medication and for at least six months after stopping it, to prevent potential exposure to pregnant women through blood transfusions. Your doctor will periodically monitor your Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels, as Dutas can affect PSA results and may be linked to an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Dutas 0.5 mg Capsule, take it as soon as you remember that same day. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses to make up for a missed one.

How should it be stored?

Dutas 0.5 mg Capsules should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F), away from moisture and direct light. Do not use the capsules if they are deformed, discolored, or leaking. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
