Description

MCV FORTE SUSP by MANEESH HEALTHCARE

Name

  • Common Name: Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid Oral Suspension
  • Brand Name: MCV Forte Dry Syrup, MCV Forte Suspension

Composition

Each 5ml of the reconstituted MCV Forte Dry Syrup/Suspension contains:

  • Amoxicillin Trihydrate equivalent to Amoxycillin 400 mg
  • Potassium Clavulanate Diluted equivalent to Clavulanic Acid 57 mg

Uses

MCV Forte Suspension is a combination antibiotic primarily used for the short-term treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections, particularly in children. It is not effective against viral infections.

Common conditions it is prescribed for include:

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Middle ear infections, sinus infections (sinusitis), and inflammation of the tonsils.
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Infections of the bladder and kidney, as well as inflammation of the urethra.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Infections resulting from cuts, bites, or other wounds, and dental abscesses.
  • Bone and Joint Infections: Such as osteomyelitis.
  • Intra-abdominal Infections: Including appendicitis and inflammation of the peritoneum.

Dosage and Administration

MCV Forte Suspension is provided in a dry powder form for reconstitution with sterile water.

  • Reconstitution: Shake the bottle to loosen the powder. Add half of the sterile water included in the package, shake well, then add more water to reach the mark on the bottle.
  • Administration: Take exactly as prescribed by a doctor, usually two to three times a day. It can be given with food to minimize stomach upset and improve absorption.
  • Important: Complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but do not double the dose. If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of administration, repeat the dose once the child has calmed down, but do not double the next scheduled dose.

Side Effects

Common side effects typically do not require medical attention and resolve over time:

  • Indigestion, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, stomach upset.
  • Headache or dizziness.
  • Skin rash or itching, vaginal itching or discharge.
  • Loss of appetite, fatigue or weakness, changes in taste or smell.

Serious side effects, though less common, require immediate medical attention:

  • Allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
  • Blood disorders (e.g., anemia, low platelet count).
  • Liver or kidney damage.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you or the patient have an allergy or sensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, penicillin, cephalosporins, or any other ingredients of the medicine.
  • Medical History: Disclose any history of liver or kidney disease, as dosage adjustments may be necessary. Also, inform about a history of diarrhea caused by antibiotics or blood disorders.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all current medications, supplements, or herbal products being taken. MCV Forte Suspension can interact with blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), tetracycline antibiotics, and antacids.
  • Food Interactions: Avoid or limit dairy products, and take vitamin and mineral supplements at least 2 hours before or after MCV Forte Suspension.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: This medicine is primarily for children. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor, as it passes into breast milk and should only be used if clearly needed.

Storage

  • Dry Powder: Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture.
  • Reconstituted Suspension: Store in a refrigerator (2°C-8°C) and use within 7 to 10 days after reconstitution. Do not freeze.

Frequently asked questions

What is MCV FORTE SUSP used for?

MCV FORTE SUSP is a combination antibiotic medication primarily used for the short-term treatment of various bacterial infections. It is effective against infections affecting the respiratory tract (such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis), urinary tract, skin and soft tissues (including dental abscesses), bone and joint infections (like osteomyelitis), gastrointestinal infections, and bloodstream infections (sepsis).

How does MCV FORTE SUSP work?

This medicine contains two active ingredients: Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that works by preventing bacteria from forming their protective outer layer, which is essential for their survival, thus stopping their growth and killing them. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that helps protect amoxicillin from being broken down by certain bacterial enzymes (beta-lactamases), thereby increasing amoxicillin's effectiveness against a wider range of bacteria.

What is the usual dosage for MCV FORTE SUSP?

The dosage of MCV FORTE SUSP is determined by a healthcare provider based on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and weight. It is typically prescribed to be taken two to three times a day. It is crucial to adhere to the prescribed dose, timing, and method of administration. For pediatric use, specifically, the dosage may vary, and it is vital to follow the doctor's instructions. The suspension should be shaken well before use and measured with a provided measuring cup or dropper.

What are the possible side effects of MCV FORTE SUSP?

Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset or discomfort, headache, dizziness, skin rash or itching, vaginal itching or discharge, loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness, or changes in taste or smell. More severe, but less common, side effects can include allergic reactions (such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), seizures, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), blood disorders (like anemia or low platelet count), and liver or kidney damage. If severe side effects or persistent symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Is MCV FORTE SUSP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, MCV FORTE SUSP should only be used if clearly needed, and the risks and benefits should be discussed with a doctor. This medication passes into breast milk, so consulting a doctor before breastfeeding is recommended. Some sources advise pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to avoid this medicine.

Can MCV FORTE SUSP be taken with other medications?

MCV FORTE SUSP can interact with several other medications. For example, it can increase the effect of blood thinners like warfarin, raising the risk of bleeding. It may also increase the levels of methotrexate, potentially leading to toxicity. Probenecid can reduce the excretion of amoxicillin, increasing its blood levels. Amoxicillin can also reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives and the absorption of tetracyclines. Taking it with antacids may decrease antibiotic absorption, and it's recommended to take iron, zinc, and magnesium supplements at least 2 hours before or after this medication. Inform your doctor about all current medications, supplements, or herbal products being taken to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using MCV FORTE SUSP?

Before taking MCV FORTE SUSP, inform your doctor if you have an allergy or sensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any other penicillin medications, a history of liver or kidney disease, antibiotic-induced diarrhea, or blood disorders. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent drug resistance. It is also recommended to avoid or limit alcohol and dairy products while taking this medication.

What happens if a dose of MCV FORTE SUSP is missed?

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is close to the time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should MCV FORTE SUSP be stored?

MCV FORTE SUSP should be stored at room temperature, ideally below 25°C or 30°C, and protected from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. The dry powder should not be refrigerated. After the suspension is reconstituted with sterile water, it should be stored in a refrigerator (2°C-8°C) and used within 7 to 10 days; any remaining medication after this period should be discarded. Keep it out of reach of children.
