- Common Name: Empagliflozin
Composition:
- Active Ingredient: Empagliflozin 10 mg
Uses: EMPAGLYDE 10MG TAB is prescribed for adults and children 10 years of age and older for:
- Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: To improve blood sugar control when diet and exercise alone are insufficient, often used as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It can be used alone or with other diabetes medicines.
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: To reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
- Heart Failure: To reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure.
- Chronic Kidney Disease: To reduce the risk of worsening kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with chronic kidney disease.
- Note: This medicine is not for treating Type 1 diabetes.
Dosage and Administration:
- The typical starting dose for adults is 10 mg once daily, taken orally in the morning, with or without food.
- For Type 2 Diabetes, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily if needed and tolerated, provided renal function is adequate.
- For heart failure and chronic kidney disease, the recommended dose is generally 10 mg once daily.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, unless it is less than 12 hours until the next scheduled dose, in which case the missed dose should be skipped.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Urinary tract infections (more common in females), vaginal yeast infections, frequent urination, dizziness, lightheadedness, and symptoms of dehydration.
- Serious Side Effects: Allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat), diabetic ketoacidosis (high ketones in blood), Fournier's gangrene (a severe bacterial infection), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar, especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas), acute kidney injury, and rarely, lower limb amputation.
Precautions:
- Before starting treatment, kidney function should be assessed and monitored periodically. Dosage adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary in patients with severe renal impairment.
- Empagliflozin can cause volume depletion; ensure adequate hydration, especially in elderly patients or those taking diuretics.
- When used with insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia increases, and a lower dose of these medications may be considered.
- Not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to potential fetal harm. Limited data on breastfeeding.
- Avoid excessive alcohol intake, as it can increase the risk of dehydration and ketoacidosis.
- Inform your doctor if you are planning surgery, as temporary discontinuation may be required.
- Report any new pain, tenderness, sores, or infections in the legs or feet.
Storage:
- Store at room temperature, below 30°C, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Frequently asked questions
Empaglyde 10mg Tablet, containing the active ingredient empagliflozin, is a medication primarily used for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus. It also offers significant benefits for cardiovascular and kidney health. Below are some frequently asked questions about Empaglyde 10mg Tablet.
What is Empaglyde 10mg Tablet used for?
Empaglyde 10mg Tablet is primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, often when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, to treat heart failure in adults with reduced heart function, and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease.
How does Empaglyde 10mg Tablet work?
Empaglyde 10mg Tablet contains empagliflozin, which belongs to a class of medicines called sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys. This action prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream, leading to increased glucose excretion in the urine and thus lowering blood sugar levels. Additionally, it can reduce sodium and volume load, contributing to its benefits in heart failure and kidney disease.
What is the usual dosage of Empaglyde 10mg Tablet?
The recommended starting dose for Empaglyde 10mg Tablet is typically 10 mg, taken once daily in the morning. Your doctor may increase the dose to 25 mg daily if needed and if it is well-tolerated, especially for diabetes management. For heart failure or chronic kidney disease, the usual dose is 10mg once daily. It can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole with water, ideally at the same time each day.
What are the possible side effects of Empaglyde 10mg Tablet?
Common side effects include genital mycotic (yeast) infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), frequent urination, increased thirst, constipation, rash, and increased cholesterol levels. More serious but less common side effects can include ketoacidosis, severe infections, low blood pressure (hypotension), and acute kidney injury.
Is Empaglyde 10mg Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Empaglyde 10mg Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn child. Similarly, it is usually not recommended while breastfeeding because it is unknown how much of the medication passes into breast milk. It is advised to consult your doctor for alternative treatment options during these periods.
Can Empaglyde 10mg Tablet be taken with other medications?
Yes, Empaglyde 10mg Tablet can interact with other medications. Taking it with diuretics may increase the risk of dehydration. When taken with other anti-diabetic medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may increase, potentially requiring dose adjustments. It may also increase lithium levels, requiring close monitoring. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken while taking Empaglyde 10mg Tablet?
Empaglyde 10mg Tablet should not be used in individuals with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is also contraindicated in severe kidney impairment. Before and during treatment, your doctor will assess your kidney function and hydration status. It's important to correct any volume depletion (dehydration) before starting the medication. Monitor for symptoms of genital mycotic infections and urinary tract infections. Exercise caution with alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar and dehydration. This medicine may cause dizziness, so be careful when driving or operating machinery.
What happens if a dose of Empaglyde 10mg Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of Empaglyde 10mg Tablet and it is 12 hours or more before your next scheduled dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Empaglyde 10mg Tablet be stored?
Empaglyde 10mg Tablet should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and at a temperature below 30°C. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
