Frequently asked questions

NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray, manufactured by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD., is a combination medication used to alleviate symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis. It contains Fluticasone furoate (a corticosteroid) and Oxymetazoline (a decongestant) which work together to reduce inflammation and relieve nasal congestion.

Here are some frequently asked questions about NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray:

What is NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray used for?

NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray is primarily used for the treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis, an inflammatory condition that can cause symptoms throughout the year. It helps relieve allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, and general stuffiness.

How does NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray work?

This medicine combines two active ingredients: Fluticasone furoate and Oxymetazoline. Fluticasone furoate, a corticosteroid, works by inhibiting the release of certain chemicals in the body that cause inflammatory reactions. Oxymetazoline, a decongestant, contracts and narrows the blood vessels in the linings of the nasal passages, thereby reducing swelling and congestion.

What is the usual dosage for NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray?

The dosage of NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray should be strictly as advised by your doctor. It is important not to use it more often or for longer than recommended. For adults and children aged 6 years and older, a common recommendation for Oxymetazoline-containing sprays is 2 or 3 drops or sprays of 0.05% solution in each nostril every 10 to 12 hours, not exceeding two applications in a 24-hour period.

What are the possible side effects of NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray?

Common side effects may include headache, taste changes, and nosebleeds. Other reported side effects are dry nose and fever. More serious, though less frequent, side effects associated with fluticasone furoate can include white patches in the mouth or on the tongue, bone pain, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, cough, unusual tiredness or weakness, blurred vision, and skin irritation or rash. Most common side effects are temporary and usually resolve over time.

Is NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Information regarding the safety of NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited. It is crucial to inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before using this medication. Your doctor will assess the potential benefits against any risks before prescribing. While oxymetazoline, one of the components, is thought to be minimally absorbed, it has not been extensively studied for use during breastfeeding.

What precautions should be taken while using NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray?

Several precautions should be observed:

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
  • Inform your doctor if you have existing health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, heart disease, liver disease, or kidney disease.
  • Avoid use if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or have recently undergone trans-nasal surgery, or have nasal trauma, septal ulcers, or infections.
  • This medicine is generally not recommended for children below six years of age.
  • Always blow your nose gently before applying the spray.
  • Do not share your nasal spray with others to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Avoid using it for prolonged periods or too frequently, as this can worsen symptoms rather than improve them. Oxymetazoline should typically not be used for more than 3 consecutive days.

Can NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray be taken with other medications?

It is important to provide your doctor with a complete list of all medications, herbs, non-prescription drugs, and dietary supplements you are using. Oxymetazoline can potentially interact with certain medications for enlarged prostate, blood pressure/heart disease (like ACE-inhibitors, beta-blockers, diuretics), MAOIs, and tricyclic antidepressants, which could lead to increased blood pressure. Fluticasone furoate can interact with potent CYP 450 inhibitors (such as certain protease inhibitors or antifungals), potentially increasing the systemic effects of the corticosteroid.

What happens if a dose of NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray be stored?

NAZOMAC-OX Nasal Spray should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. The recommended storage temperature is typically between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
