Frequently asked questions

DAPAMAC L CAP (often referred to as DAPAMAC L 10mg/5mg Tablet) is a medication manufactured by Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd. It is a combination medicine containing Dapagliflozin and Linagliptin, used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Here are some frequently asked questions about DAPAMAC L CAP:

What is DAPAMAC L CAP used for?

DAPAMAC L CAP is primarily used to control high blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps to improve glycemic control and can also reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and kidney complications associated with diabetes.

How does DAPAMAC L CAP work?

DAPAMAC L CAP contains two active ingredients: Dapagliflozin and Linagliptin.

  • Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to increased excretion of sugar through the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
  • Linagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It increases the levels of natural substances called incretins, which help regulate insulin release after meals and reduce glucose production by the liver when blood sugar is high.

What is the usual dosage of DAPAMAC L CAP?

The dose and duration of DAPAMAC L CAP are determined by your doctor based on your individual medical condition and response to treatment. It is usually taken orally once daily, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day to help remember to take it. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed, crushed, or split.

What are the possible side effects of DAPAMAC L CAP?

Common side effects of DAPAMAC L CAP include vaginal yeast infections, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), urinary tract infections (UTIs), hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), dizziness, fatigue, increased urination, and weakness. More serious but less common side effects can include dehydration and, rarely, diabetic ketoacidosis. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

DAPAMAC L CAP is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to the potential risk of fetal kidney injury. Information regarding its use during the first trimester, and during breastfeeding, is limited or not available. It is crucial to consult your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Can it be taken with other medications?

DAPAMAC L CAP can interact with other medications. It's important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking.

  • Diuretics: Taking DAPAMAC L CAP with diuretics (water pills) may increase the risk of volume depletion.
  • Other Antidiabetic Medications: When used with other antidiabetic medicines like insulin or sulfonylureas, it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia, and dose adjustments might be necessary.
  • Certain Antibiotics: Some antibiotics, like rifampin, may reduce the efficacy of linagliptin.

What precautions should be taken?

  • Kidney and Liver Issues: Inform your doctor if you have any kidney or liver problems, as dose adjustments or alternative treatments may be necessary. It is contraindicated in severe kidney or liver disease.
  • Dehydration: Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, especially as the medication increases urination.
  • Hypoglycemia: Be aware of symptoms of low blood sugar (cold sweats, pale skin, tremor, anxiety), especially when taken with other antidiabetic medications, alcohol, or if meals are delayed or missed. Always carry a sugary snack or fruit juice.
  • Alcohol: Avoid excessive alcohol intake as it can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and dehydration.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: Some individuals may experience dizziness or fatigue; exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Infections: Maintain good hygiene to help prevent fungal infections in the genital area, a possible side effect. Inform your doctor about a history of pancreatitis or recurrent urinary tract infections.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of DAPAMAC L CAP, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one.

How should it be stored?

DAPAMAC L CAP should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
