Description

ASCABIOL 60 ML Emulsion

ASCABIOL 60 ML Emulsion, manufactured by Abbott Healthcare Private Limited, is a topical medication primarily used for the treatment of parasitic skin infestations.

Composition ASCABIOL Emulsion contains a combination of two active ingredients:

  • Cetrimide (0.1% w/v)
  • Gamma Benzene Hexachloride (1% w/v), also known as Lindane

Cetrimide acts as an antiseptic agent that helps eliminate disease-causing bacteria and prevents secondary infections. Gamma Benzene Hexachloride is an antiparasitic agent that works by damaging the nervous systems of mites and lice, leading to their paralysis and death.

Uses ASCABIOL Emulsion is prescribed for the management of:

  • Scabies (a skin infection characterized by itchy rashes caused by mites)
  • Pediculosis (infestation of the scalp or body caused by lice and their eggs, including head and pubic lice)

Dosage and Administration ASCABIOL Emulsion is for external use only and should be applied as advised by a physician.

  • Application: Shake well before use. Wash hands before application. Apply an adequate amount of the emulsion to affected areas. For scabies, it is typically applied to the entire body from the neck down, paying attention to skin folds, between fingers and toes, and genital areas. For pediculosis, the affected region (e.g., scalp) is coated.
  • Duration: The emulsion is usually left on the skin for 8-12 hours, often overnight, before being thoroughly washed off with warm water and soap.
  • Frequency: A single application may suffice for scabies in many cases, but a second application after 5-7 days may be necessary if live mites or new lesions are still present to ensure complete eradication. For children under 12 years, it should be diluted with an equal quantity of water, and with three parts of water for babies.

Side Effects Common side effects include:

  • Itching or irritation of the skin
  • Skin rashes
  • Burning or redness of the skin
  • Tingling sensation in the skin
  • Dry skin

If these symptoms worsen or persist, consult a doctor. Serious side effects are rare.

Precautions

  • Contraindications: Do not use if allergic to cetrimide, gamma benzene hexachloride, or any other ingredients. Avoid use on open, broken, or cracked skin, in body cavities (mouth, ear), or near the eyes and middle ear. It is not recommended for premature infants or individuals with known uncontrolled seizure disorders.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of fits, HIV/AIDS, head injury, brain or spinal cord tumor, cirrhosis of the liver, or are a heavy alcohol drinker. Use with caution in individuals with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, or crusted scabies.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: ASCABIOL Emulsion is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly necessary, due to a lack of safety data and the possibility of passing into breast milk.
  • General Warnings: Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse immediately with water. Do not use more than the recommended dose. Care should be taken when using in infants, young children, the elderly, or individuals weighing less than 50 kg.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including antipsychotics, antidepressants, theophylline, cyclosporin, mycophenolate mofetil, tacrolimus, penicillin, imipenem, quinolone antibiotics, chloroquine sulfate, and pyrimethamine. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of seizures.
  • Environmental Treatment: To prevent re-infestation, all household members and close contacts should be treated simultaneously. Clothing, bedding, and towels should be washed in hot water or dry-cleaned.

Storage Store ASCABIOL Emulsion in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, at 20°C - 25°C. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ascabiol 60 ML used for?

Ascabiol Emulsion 60 ML is primarily used for the treatment and management of parasitic skin infestations. This includes scabies, a skin infection characterized by itchy rashes caused by mites, as well as pediculosis (lice infestations) affecting the scalp, head, and body.

How does Ascabiol 60 ML work?

Ascabiol Emulsion 60 ML contains a combination of active ingredients: Cetrimide and Gamma Benzene Hexachloride (also known as Lindane). Cetrimide acts as an antiseptic, helping to kill disease-causing microorganisms. Gamma Benzene Hexachloride is an antiparasitic agent that works by penetrating the nervous system of mites and lice, leading to their paralysis and eventual death.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

Ascabiol Emulsion 60 ML is for external use only and should be applied as advised by your physician. Before use, shake the bottle well and wash your hands. For scabies, apply enough medicine to cover the entire body from the neck down, including the soles of your feet. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, and mouth. The emulsion should typically be left on the skin for 8 to 12 hours (some sources suggest 8-14 hours or 24 hours) before being thoroughly washed off with warm water and soap. A single application is often sufficient for scabies, but a second application may be necessary after 7-10 days if live mites or new lesions persist. For body lice, treatment may be repeated after 7 days if live lice are still present. Do not use more of the medicine or apply it more often than recommended.

What are the possible side effects of Ascabiol 60 ML?

Common side effects may include itching, irritation, burning sensation, redness, skin rashes, tingling, numbness, and dry skin at the application site. Other reported side effects include hair loss, drowsiness, and headache. Rarely, more serious side effects like dizziness, severe headache, seizures, or uncontrollable shaking of the body can occur. Seizures and deaths have been reported, particularly with repeat or prolonged application, and rarely even after a single application. If excessive stinging occurs, you may test it on a small area of skin first or dilute it with an equal quantity of water, then retest before general application. Consult a doctor if any side effects worsen or persist.

Is Ascabiol 60 ML safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Ascabiol Emulsion 60 ML is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless it is considered clearly necessary and advised by a doctor, due to limited safety data and the potential for it to pass into breast milk. If breastfeeding and its use is deemed essential, it is advised to pump and discard breast milk for at least 24 hours after applying the medicine and feed the baby formula or stored breast milk during this period. Avoid applying the medicine to the breast or other large skin areas that could come into direct contact with an infant.

Can Ascabiol 60 ML be taken with other medications?

While Ascabiol Emulsion is for external use, certain medications may interact with it. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Potential interactions have been noted with antipsychotics (e.g., chlorpromazine, haloperidol, risperidone), antidepressants (e.g., citalopram, bupropion), theophylline, immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine, tacrolimus), certain antibiotics (e.g., penicillin, imipenem, quinolones), antimalarials (e.g., chloroquine, pyrimethamine), antitubercular drugs (e.g., isoniazid), pain relievers (e.g., meperidine), muscle relaxants (e.g., methocarbamol), centrally active anticholinesterases, and radiographic contrast agents, which may increase the risk of seizures.

What precautions should be taken while using Ascabiol 60 ML?

It is crucial to avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water immediately. Do not apply Ascabiol Emulsion to open wounds, broken, damaged, or severely inflamed skin. Inform your doctor if you have a history of fits or seizures, HIV/AIDS, a head injury, a brain or spinal cord tumor, cirrhosis of the liver, or if you are a heavy alcohol drinker. It is not recommended for use in premature infants, young babies, or elderly patients, and should be used with caution in infants, children, the elderly, or individuals weighing less than 50 kg; dilution may be necessary for children and babies over 2 months. To prevent re-infestation, avoid person-to-person contact and sharing of clothes and utensils with infected individuals. All recently used underwear, clothing, and bedding should be washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer.

What happens if a dose of Ascabiol 60 ML is missed?

If you miss an application of Ascabiol Emulsion, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed one and continue with your regular treatment schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

How should Ascabiol 60 ML be stored?

Ascabiol Emulsion 60 ML should be stored in a cool, dry place, typically below 25°C or 30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat. Always keep the medicine in its original packaging and out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
