Frequently asked questions
LANZOPRAX 30KID (Lansoprazole) FAQs
LANZOPRAX 30KID is a medication containing Lansoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid. It is manufactured by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD..
What is LANZOPRAX 30KID used for?
LANZOPRAX 30KID is primarily used to treat conditions caused by too much acid in the stomach. These include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the food pipe), and stomach or intestinal ulcers. It can also be used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition where the stomach produces excessive acid.
How does LANZOPRAX 30KID work?
LANZOPRAX 30KID contains Lansoprazole, which belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It works by blocking the action of an enzyme system called the hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+-ATPase) or "proton pump" in the cells of the stomach lining. This is the final step in acid production, so by blocking it, Lansoprazole effectively decreases the amount of acid the stomach makes, providing relief from symptoms and allowing damaged areas to heal.
What is the usual dosage for LANZOPRAX 30KID?
For children aged 1 to 11 years:
- Children weighing 30 kg (66 lb) or less usually take 15 mg once per day for up to 12 weeks.
- Children weighing more than 30 kg (66 lb) typically take 30 mg once per day for up to 12 weeks.
It should be taken about 30 minutes before a meal, preferably in the morning. The capsule should be swallowed whole; it should not be crushed or chewed. If swallowing a capsule is difficult, the contents (pellets) can be sprinkled onto a tablespoon of applesauce, cottage cheese, yogurt, strained pears, or mixed with a small amount of apple, orange, or tomato juice and swallowed immediately without chewing the pellets.
What are the possible side effects of LANZOPRAX 30KID?
Common side effects can include headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, and constipation. These are usually mild and may go away as the body adjusts to the medicine.
More serious, but less common, side effects include severe diarrhea (which may be watery or bloody and accompanied by fever and stomach pain), kidney damage, low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels with long-term use, bone fractures, and severe skin reactions. If any severe symptoms occur, seek immediate medical attention.
Is LANZOPRAX 30KID safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Lansoprazole is generally used with caution during pregnancy. While animal studies haven't shown harm to the fetus, there haven't been enough well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed, and your doctor may recommend alternative medicines with more safety data.
It is not definitively known how much Lansoprazole passes into breast milk. However, it has been safely used in newborns, so the amount in breast milk is unlikely to be harmful to a breastfed infant. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can LANZOPRAX 30KID be taken with other medications?
Lansoprazole can interact with certain medications, potentially affecting their effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. It's important to inform your doctor about all medications your child is taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and natural products.
Some medications that may interact with Lansoprazole include:
- Warfarin: May increase the risk of bleeding.
- Digoxin: Lansoprazole can increase digoxin levels, raising the risk of side effects.
- Sucralfate: Lansoprazole may not work as well if taken with sucralfate; take Lansoprazole at least 30 minutes before sucralfate.
- Methotrexate: Levels of methotrexate can increase in the body.
- Antifungal medicines (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole): Lansoprazole can reduce their absorption.
- Certain HIV medicines (e.g., atazanavir, nelfinavir): Lansoprazole can decrease their effectiveness.
What precautions should be taken with LANZOPRAX 30KID?
Before starting LANZOPRAX 30KID, inform your doctor if your child has liver problems, low levels of calcium, magnesium, or potassium in the blood, lupus, or a history of allergic reactions to Lansoprazole or other medicines. Long-term use (especially over 1 year) may lead to fundic gland polyps (growths in the stomach lining), low magnesium, or vitamin B12 deficiency.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should LANZOPRAX 30KID be stored?
LANZOPRAX 30KID should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C). Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight, moisture, and damp areas like bathrooms. Ensure it is kept out of the sight and reach of children.
