Description
JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET is an oral antidiabetic medication used for the management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
-
Name:
- Brand Name: Jalra-M 50/850 mg Tablet
- Common Name: Vildagliptin and Metformin Hydrochloride Tablet
-
Composition:
- Each film-coated tablet contains Vildagliptin 50 mg and Metformin Hydrochloride 850 mg (equivalent to 660 mg metformin).
-
Uses: JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET is prescribed for adult patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control. It is used when diet and exercise alone, or monotherapy with either vildagliptin or metformin, are insufficient to control blood sugar levels. This medication helps prevent serious complications of diabetes, such as kidney damage, eye damage (retinopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), diabetic foot ulcer, and may also reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke.
-
Dosage and Administration:
- The recommended dose is typically one film-coated tablet (either 50 mg/850 mg or 50 mg/1000 mg) twice daily.
- It should be taken with or immediately after food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
- Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water; do not crush, chew, or break them.
- Doses may be adjusted by a doctor based on the patient's condition and response to treatment. The maximum recommended daily dose is 100 mg Vildagliptin plus 2000 mg Metformin HCl.
-
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels) characterized by dizziness, sweating, palpitations, hunger pangs, dry mouth and skin, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, taste changes, and upper respiratory symptoms.
- Serious Side Effects: Lactic acidosis (a rare but serious condition, especially with impaired kidney function, severe infections, or alcohol intake), and in rare cases, a serious skin reaction known as bullous pemphigoid.
-
Precautions:
- Contraindications: Do not use if allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredients. It is contraindicated in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, severe kidney or liver disease, congestive heart failure, lactic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Kidney/Liver Impairment: Use with caution in patients with kidney disease, and it is generally unsafe for those with liver disease. Regular monitoring of kidney and liver function is recommended.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, including prescription, over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Interactions can occur with diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid products, oral contraceptives, and iodinated contrast materials, which may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Other Conditions: Caution is advised in patients with a history of pancreatitis or cardiac failure, and those with vitamin B12 deficiency.
-
Storage:
- Store in a cool and dry place, away from sunlight.
- Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions
What is JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET used for?
JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET is a combination medicine primarily used to treat Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is prescribed when diet and exercise alone, or treatment with vildagliptin or metformin individually, are not sufficient to control blood sugar levels. By managing blood sugar, it also helps prevent serious complications of diabetes such as kidney damage, eye damage, nerve problems, loss of limbs, heart disease, and stroke.
How does JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET work?
JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET contains two active ingredients: vildagliptin (50 mg) and metformin (850 mg).
- Vildagliptin works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which increases the release of insulin from the pancreas and decreases the hormones that raise blood sugar levels (glucagon). This helps to lower both fasting and post-meal sugar levels.
- Metformin works by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver, delaying glucose absorption from the intestines, and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, allowing cells to utilize glucose more effectively. Together, these components provide better control of blood sugar.
What is the usual dosage for JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET?
The recommended dosage is typically one film-coated tablet of either 50 mg/850 mg or 50 mg/1000 mg twice daily. It should be taken with or immediately after food to reduce the risk of an upset stomach, with one tablet in the morning and the other in the evening. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your condition, blood sugar levels, and any other medications you are taking. Doses higher than 100 mg of vildagliptin per day are not recommended.
What are the possible side effects of JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET?
Common side effects can include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain or discomfort, changes in taste, weakness, and upper respiratory symptoms. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) can also occur, characterized by symptoms like dizziness, sweating, palpitations, hunger pangs, and dry mouth. A rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis, which may present with symptoms like muscle pain or weakness, difficulty breathing, persistent nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, consult your doctor.
Is JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, and there is limited human data. Metformin does pass into breast milk, but due to limited data on vildagliptin, caution is advised, and it's considered probably unsafe during breastfeeding due to the increased risk of low blood sugar levels in the baby. Always consult your doctor for advice if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET be taken with other medications?
JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET can interact with other medicines, affecting its efficacy or increasing the risk of side effects. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking. For instance, certain diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid products, oral contraceptives, ACE inhibitors, iodinated contrast agents, and some antacids may interact with JALRA M.
What precautions should be taken while using JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET?
Several precautions should be observed when taking JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET:
- Allergies: Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any of its ingredients.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease (including congestive heart failure), pancreatitis, or low vitamin B12 levels. It is contraindicated in severe kidney or liver disease, Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, and metabolic acidosis.
- Alcohol Consumption: Avoid consuming alcohol, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and may reduce the medicine's effectiveness.
- Surgery: Inform your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery, especially those involving general anesthesia or iodinated contrast materials, as the medication might need to be temporarily discontinued.
- Monitoring: Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, kidney function, and liver function is recommended before and during treatment.
- Diet and Exercise: It is essential to continue following the diet and exercise regimen recommended by your doctor.
What happens if a dose of JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET be stored?
Store JALRA M 50/850 MG TABLET in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat, typically below 25°C. Do not refrigerate. Keep the medicine in its original package and out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medicine.
