Description

COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET, manufactured by Serdia Pharmaceuticals (India) Pvt. Ltd., is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to manage various cardiovascular conditions.

Name

  • Brand Name: COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET
  • Common Name: Perindopril (as perindopril erbumine)

Composition

Each tablet contains 8 mg of perindopril erbumine as the active ingredient. Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, colloidal anhydrous silica, and aluminium copper complexes of chlorophyllins (E141ii) lake.

Uses

COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET is prescribed for:

  • Hypertension: Treatment of high blood pressure.
  • Heart Failure: Management of heart failure, where the heart's pumping is insufficient.
  • Coronary Artery Disease: To reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in patients with stable coronary artery disease.

Dosage and Administration

The typical dosage for hypertension or after a heart attack is usually 4 mg once daily, which may be increased to 8 mg once daily after two weeks, depending on blood pressure control and tolerance. For heart failure, a lower starting dose (e.g., 2 mg) is often recommended, gradually increasing as tolerated. It should be taken once daily, preferably in the morning before a meal. Do not stop taking the medicine abruptly.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Cough (dry, persistent)
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension), feeling weak or tired
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, altered taste, diarrhea, constipation)
  • Muscle cramps, tingling or prickling sensation

Serious Side Effects (seek immediate medical attention):

  • Angioedema (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing/swallowing)
  • Severe dizziness or fainting due to very low blood pressure
  • Signs of high potassium levels (e.g., irregular heartbeat)
  • Signs of liver problems (jaundice)

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not take if allergic to perindopril, any other ACE inhibitor, or any of its ingredients.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Contraindicated during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and not recommended during breastfeeding.
  • Drug Interactions: Avoid concomitant use with aliskiren (especially in diabetes or kidney impairment) and sacubitril/valsartan. Use with caution with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements as it can increase potassium levels.
  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease, heart conditions, or those undergoing surgery/anesthesia.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of low blood pressure.
  • Driving: May cause dizziness; exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.

Storage

Store at room temperature (below 30°C) in a dry place, protected from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET contains Perindopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.

What is COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET used for?

COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients with stable coronary artery disease.

How does it work?

Perindopril, the active ingredient in COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET, is an ACE inhibitor. It works by blocking the action of an enzyme that causes blood vessels to tighten. This leads to the relaxation and widening of blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body.

What is the usual dosage?

For high blood pressure, the usual starting dose for adults is 4 mg once a day, which may be increased to a maximum of 8 mg daily after a month if needed. For stable coronary artery disease, the usual starting dose is 4 mg once daily for two weeks, then increasing to 8 mg once daily. For heart failure, a starting dose of 2 mg once daily, preferably in the morning, may be increased to 4 mg daily if tolerated. Elderly patients typically start with lower doses. COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET should preferably be taken before a meal.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include a dry, persistent cough, dizziness, headache, weakness, fatigue, and back pain. More serious but less common side effects can include angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), severe low blood pressure, high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia), and kidney problems.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET (Perindopril) is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially beyond the first three months, as it can cause serious harm or death to the developing baby. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding as it is not known if perindopril passes into breast milk and could potentially affect the infant.

Can it be taken with other medications?

COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET can interact with several medications. It is not recommended to take it with angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) or aliskiren-containing medicines, especially in patients with diabetes or kidney problems, due to increased risks of low blood pressure, high potassium, and kidney issues. Combining it with sacubitril/valsartan is also contraindicated due to a significantly increased risk of angioedema. Caution is advised with diuretics, potassium supplements, NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), lithium, and certain antidiabetic agents. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal remedies you are taking.

What precautions should be taken?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver conditions, heart problems, or a history of angioedema. Due to the risk of dizziness or weakness, especially when starting treatment, exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. Monitoring of kidney function, blood pressure, and potassium levels is often recommended during treatment. It's important to stay hydrated, especially during exercise or hot weather, to prevent a sudden drop in blood pressure.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

How should it be stored?

COVERSYL 8 MG TABLET should be stored at room temperature, away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.
