Description
Extralube Eye Drops 10 ML
Extralube Eye Drops are an ophthalmic lubricant, often referred to as artificial tears, manufactured by Micro Labs Limited.
Composition The primary active ingredient is Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) 0.5% w/v (or 5mg/ml). Some formulations also contain Oxychloro Complex as a gentle preservative.
Uses Extralube Eye Drops are prescribed to provide temporary relief from the symptoms of dry eyes, which can include burning, itching, irritation, discomfort, and a foreign body sensation. They are also used to lubricate and rewet soft and rigid gas-permeable contact lenses and to alleviate dryness and irritation following laser or cataract eye surgery.
Dosage and Administration Typically, instill 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye(s) as needed, or as directed by a healthcare professional. It is crucial to wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface or the eye to prevent contamination. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to avoid dilution.
Side Effects Common side effects may include eye pain, discomfort, irritation, burning, stinging, itching, blurred vision, visual disturbances, redness of the eye, eyelid swelling, and medication residue. If these symptoms persist or worsen, or if severe allergic reactions occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Precautions Do not use Extralube Eye Drops if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances after using the drops. Inform your doctor if you develop an eye infection while using this medicine or are using other eye medications. Do not use the eye drops for more than 30 days after breaking the seal and avoid using if the solution appears cloudy or has changed color. Consult a doctor for use in children, pregnant, and breastfeeding women, although it is generally considered safe.
Storage Store Extralube Eye Drops at or below 25°C in a clean, cool, and dry place, away from direct sunlight, children, and pets. Do not use beyond the expiry date.
Frequently asked questions
What is EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS used for?
EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS are primarily used to relieve symptoms of dry eyes, such as burning, irritation, and discomfort. They are also used to alleviate dryness caused by environmental factors like wind and sun, prolonged screen exposure, or after eye surgeries like laser or cataract surgery. Additionally, they can be used to lubricate and re-wet soft and rigid gas-permeable contact lenses.
How does EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS work?
EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS contain Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), which acts as an ophthalmic lubricant, often referred to as artificial tears. It works by mimicking natural tears, providing moisture and forming a protective film over the eye surface. This helps to maintain the water balance of the eye, soothe irritation, and protect against further dryness and discomfort.
What is the usual dosage for EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS?
The dosage should be as advised by your doctor. Typically, 1 to 2 drops are instilled into the affected eye(s) as needed. It's common to use it up to four times daily, or as prescribed by your physician. For lubricating contact lenses, apply 1 to 2 drops to each eye with the lenses on, as needed.
What are the possible side effects of EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS?
Common side effects may include temporary eye irritation, itching, a stinging or burning sensation in the eye, blurred vision, redness of the eye, eye pain, eye discharge, and occasionally eyelid swelling or medication residue. These side effects are usually mild and resolve over time. If they persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
Is EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
There is limited information available regarding the effects of EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS during pregnancy, and caution is advised. It is recommended to consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant before using this medicine. For breastfeeding mothers, EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS can generally be used with caution, as it is an external application with negligible chances of systemic absorption; however, consulting your doctor is still advised.
Can EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS be taken with other medications?
If you are using other eye drops, it is generally recommended to wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applying EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS and any other eye medication to prevent dilution. No specific drug-drug interactions with systemic medications have been widely reported, but always inform your doctor about all other medicines, supplements, or over-the-counter products you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while using EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS?
Before using, remove contact lenses and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelids, or any other surface to prevent contamination. Do not use the solution if it changes color or appears cloudy. If you experience blurred vision after applying the drops, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision clears. Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to the ingredients, or if you have pre-existing liver or kidney impairment, or if you are using it for children under three years, as safety and effectiveness in these groups may not be well established.
What happens if a dose of EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS is missed?
If you miss a dose, instill the drops as soon as you remember, provided the next scheduled dose is more than 4 hours away. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed application.
How should EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS be stored?
Store EXTRALUBE EYE DROPS in a cool, dry place at or below 25°C or below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep the medicine out of sight and reach of children. Do not use the eye drops after the expiry date, and discard any opened bottle after 30 days to ensure sterility and efficacy.
