LINOX 600MG TAB

LINOX 600MG TAB is an antibiotic medication manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. used to treat severe bacterial infections.

Composition

LINOX 600MG TAB contains Linezolid 600mg as its active ingredient.

Uses

LINOX 600MG TAB is prescribed for the management of various serious bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including drug-resistant strains. It is effective in treating:

  • Bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissues (complicated and uncomplicated, including diabetic foot infections).
  • Lung infections (pneumonia), including community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia.
  • Vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections (VRE), including intra-abdominal infections, urinary tract infections, and concurrent bacteremia (presence of bacteria in the bloodstream).
  • Blood infections. It is important to note that LINOX 600MG TAB does not work against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

Dosage and Administration

LINOX 600MG TAB should be taken orally, with or without food, as advised by your doctor, preferably at a fixed time each day. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed or chewed. The dosage and duration of treatment are dependent on the pathogen, the site of infection, its severity, and the patient's clinical response, with a maximum treatment duration of 28 days. It is crucial to complete the full course of medication even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning or worsening and to avoid antibiotic resistance.

Side Effects

Common side effects of LINOX 600MG TAB may include:

  • Headache, dizziness.
  • Thrush (a fungal infection).
  • Metallic taste in the mouth.
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, stomach pain.
  • Difficulty in sleeping.
  • Decreased blood cell counts (red cells, white cells, and platelets).

Serious side effects, though less common, can include:

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing).
  • Vision problems (like blurred vision, changes in color vision, difficulty in seeing detail, or restricted field of vision), especially with prolonged use (more than 28 days).
  • Severe diarrhea with blood or mucus, which may indicate Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
  • Numbness or tingling in the limbs (peripheral neuropathy).
  • Liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
  • Lactic acidosis.
  • Hypertension (increased blood pressure).

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not take LINOX 600MG TAB if you are allergic to Linezolid or any of its components.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women unless clearly advised by a doctor, as it may pass into breast milk and affect the baby.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about any history of liver disease, kidney problems (especially if on dialysis), heart disease (such as uncontrolled high blood pressure), mental health problems, overactive thyroid, anemia, history of seizures, or conditions that make you prone to infections.
  • Tyramine-rich Foods: Avoid consuming large quantities of tyramine-rich foods (e.g., aged cheese, cured meats, fermented products, red wine, smoked fish, overripe fruits) while taking this medicine, as it can lead to a dangerous increase in blood pressure.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase dizziness.
  • Driving and Machinery: LINOX 600MG TAB may cause dizziness and vision problems; exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.
  • Blood Tests: Your doctor may monitor blood counts and eyesight during prolonged treatment.
  • Self-medication: Do not self-medicate, as this can lead to antibiotic resistance.

Storage

Store LINOX 600MG TAB in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, at temperatures below 25°C or 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Linox 600mg Tablet contains Linezolid, an antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections. It belongs to a class of antibiotics called oxazolidinones.

What is Linox 600mg Tablet used for?

Linox 600mg Tablet is primarily used to treat serious bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including drug-resistant strains like MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (Vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections). These infections can occur in various parts of the body, such as the lungs (pneumonia, including community-acquired and hospital-acquired), skin and soft tissues (including complicated and uncomplicated skin infections, and diabetic foot infections), and blood (bacteremia). It is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

How does Linox 600mg Tablet work?

Linox 600mg Tablet, with its active ingredient Linezolid, works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the bacterial 23S ribosomal RNA of the 50S subunit, preventing the formation of a functional 70S initiation complex, which is essential for bacteria to grow and multiply. This action effectively stops the growth and spread of the infection-causing bacteria, ultimately killing them.

What is the usual dosage?

For adults and children 12 years of age and older, the typical dosage is 600 mg every 12 hours. The duration of treatment usually ranges from 10 to 14 days, but can extend up to 28 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection. It can be taken with or without food. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage and duration based on your specific medical condition.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Linox 600mg Tablet may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, and a metallic taste. Some individuals may also experience thrush (a fungal infection) or a decrease in blood cell counts (red cells, white cells, and platelets). More serious but less common side effects can include severe allergic reactions, vision problems (optic neuropathy, especially with prolonged use), lactic acidosis, and numbness or tingling in the limbs (peripheral neuropathy). If any side effects persist or worsen, it is important to consult your doctor.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Linox 600mg Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly advised by a doctor, as there is limited information on its effects in pregnant women and animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity. A doctor will weigh the potential benefits against the theoretical risks before prescribing. It is also not recommended to breastfeed while taking Linox 600mg Tablet, as the active ingredient, Linezolid, may pass into breast milk and could harm the baby. Your doctor will advise on the best course of action.

Can it be taken with other medications?

Linox 600mg Tablet can interact with several other medications. It is a reversible, nonselective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAO), so it should not be taken with MAO inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, isocarboxazid, selegiline, moclobemide) or within two weeks of taking them, due to the risk of severe adverse effects. Caution is also advised with serotonergic agents (e.g., certain antidepressants like fluoxetine or paroxetine, or triptans for migraines) as it can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Adrenergic agents (e.g., phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, dopamine, epinephrine) and certain blood pressure-increasing medicines should be used with caution due to the potential for an exaggerated pressor response. Other antibiotics like rifampicin may decrease Linezolid levels, reducing its effectiveness. It can also interact with warfarin and insulin/oral hypoglycaemics. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken?

Several precautions should be taken while on Linox 600mg Tablet:

  • Alcohol and Tyramine-rich Foods: Avoid consuming alcohol, especially draught beers and wine, as it may increase side effects like dizziness and could potentially interact with tyramine. Foods high in tyramine (e.g., aged cheese, fermented products, smoked fish, yeast extracts, soy sauce, over-ripe fruits) should also be avoided or consumed in limited quantities, as they can cause a significant increase in blood pressure when taken with Linezolid.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: Linox 600mg Tablet may cause dizziness and vision problems, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, thyroid problems, psychiatric disorders, anemia, history of seizures, liver or kidney problems, or diabetes.
  • Blood Tests and Eye Monitoring: Your doctor may perform regular blood tests to monitor your blood count, especially during prolonged treatment. Eye monitoring may also be recommended if the treatment lasts for more than 28 days.
  • Diarrhea: If you develop persistent or severe diarrhea, especially with blood in stools, contact your doctor immediately, as it could be a sign of Clostridioides difficile infection.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Linox 600mg Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed to ensure the infection is fully treated and to prevent antibiotic resistance. If you miss several doses, consult your doctor.

How should it be stored?

Linox 600mg Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of the sight and reach of children. It is typically stored at room temperature, generally between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep the medicine in its original closed container.
