Frequently asked questions

GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE PEPPERMINT SUGAR FREE 110 ML by MANKIND PHARMA LTD is a combination medicine used to treat constipation. It contains Sodium Picosulphate, Magnesium Hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia), and Liquid Paraffin, which work together to soften stools and promote bowel movements.

What is GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE used for?

GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE is primarily used for the short-term management and relief of constipation. This includes constipation associated with various conditions such as piles (hemorrhoids), anal fissures, hernias, cardiovascular disorders, and for bowel clearance before medical procedures like endoscopy or radioscopy. It is also used in pre- and post-operative conditions, and for elderly or bedridden patients. Additionally, it can help in the easy passage of gas and may offer relief from indigestion and heartburn.

How does GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE work?

GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE works through a combination of three active ingredients:

  • Sodium Picosulphate acts as a stimulant laxative, preventing water absorption in the colon and stimulating the propulsive activity of the colon, which promotes water accumulation and increases intestinal movements.
  • Magnesium Hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia) is an osmotic laxative that increases the osmotic gradient in the gut, drawing water into the intestine. This helps to soften the stools and facilitates bowel evacuation.
  • Liquid Paraffin functions as a lubricant, coating the bowels and softening the stools, making them easier to pass. Together, these ingredients soften stools, lubricate the bowels, and increase intestinal movement for easier and more comfortable bowel evacuation. The effect of the medication typically begins within 6 to 12 hours.

What is the usual dosage for GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE?

The dosage of GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE should be taken exactly as advised by your doctor, as it depends on your medical condition and response to the medicine. Always check the label for directions, measure the advised dose using a measuring cup, and shake the bottle well before use. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it at a fixed time, often at bedtime, is recommended to produce a bowel movement the following morning. Do not use this medicine for more than 7 days (or a week) unless specifically advised by your doctor, to prevent dependency. It is also crucial to drink plenty of fluids (at least 6-8 glasses) daily while taking this laxative to aid in softening stools and prevent dehydration.

What are the possible side effects of GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE?

Common side effects of GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE include diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, pain, or cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Other less common side effects can include sudden passage of stool (anal seepage), anal irritation, muscle weakness, dry mouth, extreme thirst, rectal bleeding, dizziness, gastrointestinal disturbances, loss of appetite, fatigue, and itching of the skin. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and resolve as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, if any side effects persist or worsen, you should consult your doctor. If you experience diarrhoea, ensure you drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

Is GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor before taking GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE. It should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding as there isn't sufficient or well-controlled study information available on its use in these conditions. Your doctor will weigh the benefits against the potential risks before prescribing it.

Can GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE be taken with other medications?

GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE may interfere with the absorption of other medicines, potentially reducing their effectiveness. It is generally recommended to take this laxative at least three to four hours before or after taking other medications. Specific drug interactions have been noted with Tetracycline, Furosemide, and Prednisolone. You should avoid taking antacids or other laxatives without consulting your doctor. Always inform your healthcare team about all other medications, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medicines, that you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken when using GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE?

Do not use GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, have severe dehydration, intestinal obstruction, severe kidney or gastrointestinal conditions, or painful abdominal conditions such as appendicitis. It is not recommended for use in children as its safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been established. Prolonged use of this laxative (beyond a week) should be avoided to prevent dependency for bowel movements. If you notice any sudden changes in bowel habits that persist for over two weeks, or if symptoms continue or worsen, consult your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney diseases, as a suitable dose may need to be prescribed. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber, drinking plenty of water, and exercising regularly can further help in managing constipation.

What happens if a dose of GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE is missed?

If you miss a dose of GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Given that it's often a once-daily dose, it's advised not to miss it.

How should GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE be stored?

GUDLAX-PLUS LAXATIVE should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. It should be kept out of sight and reach of children. The recommended storage temperature is typically between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC.
