ORNIDA INFUSION

ORNIDA INFUSION is an antibacterial and antiprotozoal medication, designed for intravenous administration. It is manufactured by Aristo Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd.

  • Composition

    • Active Ingredient: Ornidazole 500 mg per 100 ml
    • Other Ingredients: Sodium chloride 0.9% w/v, Water for Injection q.s.
  • Uses ORNIDA INFUSION is primarily used to treat a wide range of bacterial and protozoal infections. It is indicated for acute and severe infections or when oral administration is not feasible. Specific conditions include:

    • Bacterial Infections: Septicemia, meningitis, peritonitis, post-operative wound infections, post-natal sepsis, septic abortion, endometritis, and anaerobic systemic infections. It is also used to prevent infections after surgery (surgical prophylaxis).
    • Protozoal Infections: Severe intestinal amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis.
    • Other Uses: Dental infections, leg ulcers, and pressure sores.
  • Dosage and Administration ORNIDA INFUSION is administered intravenously by a healthcare professional in a hospital setting and should not be self-administered. The dosage and duration of treatment are determined by the doctor based on the patient's age, body weight, and medical condition. The solution is typically diluted to 5 mg/mL or less and infused over 15 to 30 minutes. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed.

  • Side Effects

    • Common: Dry mouth, headache, loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, metallic aftertaste, sleepiness, tiredness, dizziness/vertigo, muscle rigidity, skin rash, itching, and epigastric discomfort.
    • Serious (Rare): Allergic reactions (severe skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, hands, feet or ankles, difficulty in swallowing or breathing), rigidity, poor coordination, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Prolonged use or high doses may increase the risk of nerve damage.
  • Precautions

    • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 3 days after completing the course, as it can lead to unpleasant reactions such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, and flushing.
    • Pregnancy: Consult a doctor. While some sources suggest it can be safe, others advise caution, and it is generally not recommended unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
    • Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor. Information is limited, and caution is advised.
    • Pre-existing Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or liver disease. It is considered safe for patients with kidney disease, with no dose adjustment typically needed.
    • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all current medications, including blood thinners (e.g., warfarin) and muscle relaxants (e.g., vecuronium bromide), as interactions may occur.
    • Driving/Operating Machinery: May cause dizziness or blurred vision, so exercise caution.
  • Storage Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, at a temperature between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Protect from light and do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and dispose of any unused solution properly.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about ORNIDA INFUSION:

What is ORNIDA INFUSION used for?

ORNIDA INFUSION is an antibacterial medication primarily used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections. It is effective against conditions such as septicemia, meningitis, peritonitis, post-operative wound infections, post-natal sepsis, septic abortion, endometritis, and anaerobic systemic infections caused by ornidazole-sensitive microflora. It is also used to treat post-operative infections, severe intestinal amoebiasis, giardiasis, vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, and dental infections.

How does ORNIDA INFUSION work?

ORNIDA INFUSION contains Ornidazole, which belongs to a class of antibacterial medications called nitroimidazoles. It works by damaging the DNA of the infection-causing agents and inhibiting their growth, thereby treating the infections. This mechanism is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.

What is the usual dosage?

ORNIDA INFUSION is administered by a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or nurse, directly into a vein. The doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration of treatment based on the patient's age, body weight, and specific medical condition. It is crucial not to self-administer this medication. For anaerobic bacterial infections, an initial dose of 0.5 to 1 gram is often given intravenously, followed by 500 mg every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days. For prevention of post-operative anaerobic bacterial infections, 1 gram is typically given by intravenous infusion about 30 minutes before surgery.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of ORNIDA INFUSION include dry mouth, headache, loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sleepiness, tiredness, metallic taste in the mouth, epigastric discomfort, and skin reactions like rash or itching. More serious, though rare, side effects can include rigidity, poor coordination, seizures, and temporary loss of consciousness. If any side effects persist or worsen, or if severe allergic reactions occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

ORNIDA INFUSION is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary and prescribed by a doctor, who will weigh the benefits against the potential risks. Animal studies suggest possible harm to the baby during pregnancy. If breastfeeding, the doctor will decide if the infusion can be taken, as information regarding its use during breastfeeding is limited and its effect on breast milk is unclear.

Can it be taken with other medications?

Patients should inform their doctor about all current medications, including over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements, before starting ORNIDA INFUSION. ORNIDA INFUSION can potentiate the effect of coumarin-type oral anticoagulants (like warfarin), requiring dose adjustment of the anticoagulant. It also prolongs the muscle relaxant effect of vecuronium bromide.

What precautions should be taken?

Avoid consuming alcohol during treatment with ORNIDA INFUSION and for at least 3 days after finishing the course, as it can lead to unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting, flushing, and stomach pain. Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, kidney problems, or liver disease, as dose adjustments may be necessary or caution is advised. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, or lightheadedness. It is important to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cured and to prevent antibiotic resistance.

What happens if a dose is missed?

Since ORNIDA INFUSION is administered by a healthcare professional in a hospital setting, the chances of missing a dose are generally low. However, if a dose is missed, it should be taken promptly. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing routine should be continued. Do not take extra doses to compensate for a missed one.

How should it be stored?

ORNIDA INFUSION should be stored in its original container in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. It should be kept out of reach and sight of children. Specific storage temperatures range from 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC for non-cold chain items. Any unused portion should be discarded, and partially used containers should not be reconnected.
