FIBRINIL MF
Name: FIBRINIL MF (marketed by FRANCO INDIAN PHARMA (ZINDA))
Composition: FIBRINIL MF contains two active ingredients:
- Tranexamic acid: An anti-fibrinolytic that works by controlling excessive bleeding during periods.
- Mefenamic acid: A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers which cause pain and inflammation.
Uses: FIBRINIL MF tablets are prescribed to treat heavy menstrual bleeding and menstrual pain.
Dosage and Administration: This medication should be taken in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. It is recommended to take it with food to avoid stomach upset. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but if it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double the dose. For heavy periods, it is suggested to take it on the first day of bleeding.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Nasal congestion
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Sinus pain and inflammation
Precautions:
- Pregnancy: FIBRINIL MF is considered unsafe for use during pregnancy, as some studies suggest it may cause harmful effects on developing babies.
- Alcohol: It is unsafe to consume alcohol while taking this medication.
- Driving: This medication may reduce alertness, affect vision, and cause sleepiness or dizziness; therefore, driving should be avoided if these symptoms occur.
- Kidney Disease: Use with caution in patients with kidney disease, as a dose adjustment may be required.
- Liver Disease: It is generally safe for use in patients with liver disease, and dose adjustment is typically not required.
- Interactions: Concurrent use with certain medications, such as some NSAIDs (e.g., ketorolac, aceclofenac, celecoxib) may enhance gastrointestinal adverse effects or increase the risk of bleeding. Combining tranexamic acid with certain hormonal contraceptives (e.g., desogestrel, estradiol, norgestimate) may increase the risk of thrombotic events.
Storage: FIBRINIL MF tablets should be stored below 20-25°C and kept away from children.
Frequently asked questions
What is FIBRINIL MF used for?
FIBRINIL MF is primarily used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) and menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea). It may also be used for severe blood loss, swelling, fever, inflammation, and migraine headaches in some cases.
How does FIBRINIL MF work?
This medicine works through the combined action of its two components: tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid. Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic that helps improve blood clotting by preventing or slowing down the breakdown of blood clots. Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that relieves pain and reduces inflammation by inhibiting the production of chemical messengers called prostaglandins.
What is the usual dosage for FIBRINIL MF?
FIBRINIL MF should be taken in the dose and duration prescribed by your doctor. It is generally advised to take this medication with food to help avoid stomach upset.
What are the possible side effects of FIBRINIL MF?
Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn, and headache. Other possible side effects are loss of appetite, nasal congestion, musculoskeletal pain, and sinus pain and inflammation. If these side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
Is FIBRINIL MF safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
FIBRINIL MF is considered unsafe for use during pregnancy, particularly in the last trimester, as some studies suggest it may cause harmful effects on developing babies. However, it is generally considered safe to use during breastfeeding, as human studies indicate the drug may not pass into breastmilk in significant amounts and is unlikely to harm the baby.
Can FIBRINIL MF be taken with other medications?
You should inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking. FIBRINIL MF may interact with birth control medications (such as desogestrel, estradiol), streptokinase, ibuprofen, paracetamol, and celecoxib. Concurrent use with certain drugs like ketorolac, aceclofenac, or some oral contraceptives may increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or thrombotic events.
What precautions should be taken while taking FIBRINIL MF?
Take FIBRINIL MF with food to avoid stomach upset. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, a history of blood clots, or a bleeding disorder. You should also consult your doctor if there is no improvement in bleeding after taking this medication. Avoid consuming alcohol while on this medication. It may reduce alertness, affect vision, and cause dizziness or sleepiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery if these symptoms occur.
What happens if a dose of FIBRINIL MF is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should FIBRINIL MF be stored?
FIBRINIL MF tablets should be stored in a cool and dry place, ideally below 20-25°C or below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children.
