Frequently asked questions
OMNIGEL 30 G by CIPLA HEALTH LTD. - Frequently Asked Questions
What is OMNIGEL used for?
OMNIGEL is a topical pain relief gel primarily used to alleviate pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with various musculoskeletal and joint conditions. These include acute musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis, sprains, strains, muscle stiffness, joint pain, backache, neck pain, shoulder pain, and sports injuries.
How does OMNIGEL work?
OMNIGEL contains a combination of active ingredients: Diclofenac, Linseed Oil, Methyl Salicylate, and Menthol. Diclofenac and Methyl Salicylate are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that work by reducing the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) in the body that cause pain and inflammation. Linseed oil also contributes anti-inflammatory properties. Menthol provides a cooling sensation by dilating blood vessels, followed by an analgesic effect, and helps enhance the penetration of the other drugs into the skin. Methyl Salicylate acts as a counter-irritant, creating a warming sensation that helps alleviate pain.
What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?
OMNIGEL is for external use only. Apply a small amount of the gel onto the clean, dry affected area and gently massage it into the skin until fully absorbed. It is typically used 3-4 times a day or as directed by a healthcare professional. Wash your hands thoroughly after application, unless the hands are the treated area. Avoid showering or bathing for at least one hour after applying the gel.
What are the possible side effects of OMNIGEL?
Common side effects at the application site may include itching, irritation, redness, and a burning or stinging sensation. These usually subside over time. More serious, though rare, side effects can include severe skin allergies (like rashes or hives), and in some instances, systemic effects typical of oral NSAIDs such as cardiovascular thrombotic events, gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, perforation, or liver toxicity. The presence of Menthol and Methyl salicylate can also rarely lead to convulsions. Consult your doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.
Is OMNIGEL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
OMNIGEL should be used with caution during pregnancy. It should only be used under medical advice during the first six months of pregnancy and must not be used during the last three months, as it could potentially harm the unborn child or cause problems during delivery due to the risk of premature closure of the ductus arteriosus. For breastfeeding mothers, consult your doctor to determine if it can be safely used.
Can OMNIGEL be taken with other medications?
It is generally not recommended to use OMNIGEL concomitantly with oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin due to the potential for increased adverse effects. Caution is advised if you are taking anticoagulants such as warfarin, as topical methyl salicylate can increase the risk of bleeding. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about all medications you are taking, including other topical products, to avoid potential interactions. OMNIGEL can be used with oral painkillers under medical supervision to avoid overdosage.
What precautions should be taken while using OMNIGEL?
Do not apply OMNIGEL to open wounds, broken, infected, or irritated skin, or on mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, nose). Avoid covering the treated area tightly with bandages or applying external heat. Limit exposure of the treated area to direct sunlight. OMNIGEL is not recommended for children under 14 years of age (or under 2 years, with caution for older children). Do not use this medicine if you have a known allergy to any of its ingredients or if you have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Patients with known cardiovascular disease, or liver or kidney impairment should consult a doctor before use.
What happens if a dose of OMNIGEL is missed?
As OMNIGEL is applied as needed for pain, missing a dose is uncommon. If you remember a missed application, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it has been more than 6 hours since the missed dose, skip it and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should OMNIGEL be stored?
Store OMNIGEL in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. The ideal storage temperature is generally below 25°C (or between 10°C and 25°C, or below 30°C). Do not freeze the gel. Always keep it out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
