Description
JANUVIA 50 TABLET
JANUVIA 50 TABLET, manufactured by MSD Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, is an oral medication primarily used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
-
Name
- Brand Name: JANUVIA 50 TABLET
- Common Name: Sitagliptin
-
Composition Each film-coated tablet contains Sitagliptin phosphate monohydrate, equivalent to 50 mg of sitagliptin. Sitagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor.
-
Uses JANUVIA 50 TABLET is prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas after a meal and decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver, thereby helping to lower high blood sugar levels.
-
Dosage and Administration The typical recommended dose for JANUVIA is 100 mg once daily. However, for patients with moderate renal impairment (eGFR 30 to <45 mL/min/1.73 m2), the dose of JANUVIA is 50 mg once daily. For severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis, the dose is 25 mg once daily. JANUVIA can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken.

Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Upper respiratory tract infections (such as cold symptoms, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat), headache, and joint pain. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) may occur, particularly when Januvia is used in combination with insulin or sulfonylurea medications.
- Serious Side Effects: Rare but serious side effects include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, characterized by severe and persistent stomach pain, sometimes with vomiting), severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, blistering/peeling skin such as bullous pemphigoid), heart failure (symptoms like increasing shortness of breath, swelling in legs/feet, rapid weight gain), and severe kidney problems, including acute kidney failure.
-
Precautions JANUVIA is not indicated for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients should inform their doctor if they have a history of kidney disease, heart problems (especially heart failure), pancreatitis, high triglycerides, gallstones, or alcoholism. Dosage adjustments are necessary for patients with renal impairment. When used with insulin or sulfonylureas, a lower dose of these medications may be required to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia. JANUVIA is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it should not be used in children under 18 years of age. Blood sugar levels and kidney function should be monitored regularly during treatment. Patients taking digoxin should be monitored as Januvia may affect digoxin blood levels.
-
Storage Store JANUVIA tablets at room temperature, ideally between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), with excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep the medicine in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep JANUVIA and all medicines out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
Januvia 50mg Tablet is a medication prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps manage blood sugar levels when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
What is Januvia 50mg Tablet used for?
Januvia 50mg Tablet is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus by helping to control high blood sugar levels. It is often prescribed when diet and exercise alone, or other medications, are not sufficient to manage blood sugar. This helps to prevent serious complications of diabetes, such as kidney damage and blindness.
How does Januvia 50mg Tablet work?
Januvia 50mg Tablet contains sitagliptin, which belongs to a class of medicines called DPP-4 inhibitors. It works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas after meals and decreasing the production of hormones that raise blood sugar levels. This action helps to reduce both fasting and post-meal sugar levels.
What is the usual dosage of Januvia 50mg Tablet?
The typical recommended dose of Januvia is 100 mg once daily. However, for patients with moderate renal impairment, the dose is usually adjusted to 50 mg once daily. For those with severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the dose is 25 mg once daily. It can be taken with or without food.
What are the possible side effects of Januvia 50mg Tablet?
Common side effects can include headache, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat (nasopharyngitis), and upper respiratory tract infections. If taken with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylurea, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is a possible side effect. Serious but less common side effects can include inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), which may be severe and potentially fatal, heart failure, and severe joint pain. Other serious reactions like allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat) and a skin condition called bullous pemphigoid (skin blisters or sores) have also been reported.
Is Januvia 50mg Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Januvia is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy, and you should consult your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Blood sugar control is crucial during pregnancy. It is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding as limited human data suggests the drug may pass into breast milk and potentially harm the baby.
Can Januvia 50mg Tablet be taken with other medications?
Januvia 50mg Tablet can be taken alone or with other diabetes medicines such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin. However, when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, there is an increased risk of low blood sugar, and your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of those medications. It's important to inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Digoxin levels may need to be monitored if taken concurrently with Januvia.
What precautions should be taken while using Januvia 50mg Tablet?
Before taking Januvia, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, heart problems (including heart failure), or pancreas problems. Limit alcohol intake as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar. You may need regular tests, such as kidney function and blood glucose levels, to ensure the medicine is working correctly. If you experience severe and persistent stomach pain, with or without vomiting, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately as this could be a sign of pancreatitis.
What happens if a dose of Januvia 50mg Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of Januvia, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose (e.g., more than 12 hours after the missed dose), skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Januvia 50mg Tablet be stored?
Januvia 50mg Tablet should be stored at room temperature, typically below 25°C or 30°C. Keep it in a secure location away from excessive heat, moisture, or direct sunlight, and out of the sight and reach of children.
