GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML

GATILOX DM EYE DROP is an ophthalmic solution manufactured by SUN PHARMA LABORATORIES LTD., primarily used to manage bacterial eye infections and associated inflammation. It is also commonly referred to as Gatilox DM Sterile Eye Drops.

  • Composition

    • Gatifloxacin (0.3% w/v): A fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, thereby killing the bacteria.
    • Dexamethasone (0.1% w/v): A potent corticosteroid that suppresses inflammation by blocking the release of inflammatory substances and reducing redness, swelling, and discomfort.
  • Uses Gatilox DM Eye Drops are prescribed for various steroid-responsive ocular inflammatory conditions where bacterial infections or the risk of bacterial infections exist. These include:

    • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye).
    • Superficial ocular infections.
    • Inflammation associated with bacterial eye infections, helping to reduce redness, swelling, and irritation.
    • Post-operative eye conditions such as pain, swelling, and redness, and to decrease the risk of infection in post-operative patients.
  • Dosage and Administration Gatilox DM Eye Drops are for ophthalmic use only and should be used exactly as advised by a doctor.

    • Always wash hands thoroughly before using the drops.
    • Tilt the head back slightly, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and gently squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket without touching the eye with the dropper.
    • Close the eye and gently press a finger to the inside corner of the eye for about 1 minute to prevent drainage into the tear duct.
    • The typical adult dosage might involve instilling 1 drop every 2 hours into the affected eye(s) up to 8 times daily for the first 2 days, then reducing to 1 drop 4 times daily on days 3-7, or as prescribed.
    • Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to ensure the infection is fully cured and to prevent recurrence.
  • Side Effects Common side effects may include:

    • Eye irritation, pain, or discomfort.
    • Burning or stinging sensation.
    • Eye pruritus (itching).
    • Taste disturbance.
    • Watery eyes or increased lacrimation.
    • Blurred vision (temporary).

Serious side effects, though rare, can include severe allergic reactions, severe eye pain, redness, irritation, vision changes, or inflammation of the cornea. Prolonged use of corticosteroids can lead to increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma) and posterior subcapsular cataracts.

  • Precautions

    • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to gatifloxacin, dexamethasone, benzalkonium chloride, or any other quinolone or corticosteroid medicines.
    • Infections: Not recommended for use in fungal infections, viral infections (such as herpes simplex or varicella), or systemic fungal infections.
    • Contact Lenses: Remove soft contact lenses before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinsertion.
    • Driving & Machinery: May cause temporary blurred vision; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until vision is clear.
    • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding, as information regarding safety is limited or suggests caution.
    • Medical Conditions: Exercise caution and inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, holes or ulcerations in the eyes, convulsive diseases, low blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, diabetes, or myasthenia gravis. Intraocular pressure should be monitored with prolonged use (10 days or more).
    • Interactions: Unlikely to interact with alcohol due to topical administration. Inform your doctor about any other medications, especially antiviral or oral steroid medicines.
  • Storage Store at a temperature below 25ºC (room temperature), in a cool and dry place. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Discard any unused medicine.

Frequently asked questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions about GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML.

What is GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML used for?

GATILOX DM Eye Drops are primarily used to treat bacterial eye infections, such as bacterial conjunctivitis, and other superficial ocular infections. This medicine also helps in managing inflammation, redness, swelling, and discomfort associated with these infections, including those that occur after eye surgeries.

How does GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML work?

GATILOX DM Eye Drops combine two active ingredients: Gatifloxacin and Dexamethasone. Gatifloxacin is an antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone class that works by stopping the growth and multiplication of bacteria in the eye by inhibiting essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication. Dexamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, redness, and swelling by blocking the release of substances that cause these inflammatory responses.

What is the usual dosage for GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML?

The exact dosage and duration should always be as advised by your doctor, as it can vary based on the severity of your condition. A typical regimen might involve instilling 1 drop every 2 hours into the affected eye(s) up to 8 times daily for the first two days, then reducing to 1 drop four times daily for days 3-7. It's crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed.

What are the possible side effects of GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML?

Common side effects can include eye irritation, burning sensation, stinging, eye pain, itching (pruritus), watery eyes, and temporary blurred vision. Some individuals may also experience taste disturbance. Prolonged use of this medication may lead to increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma) or the formation of cataracts. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: GATILOX DM Eye Drops should be used with caution during pregnancy and only if clearly prescribed by your doctor, when the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Limited information is available on its safety in pregnant women. Breastfeeding: It is generally recommended to use GATILOX DM Eye Drops with caution while breastfeeding. The presence of the medicine in breast milk has not been confirmed, so it's advisable to consult your doctor before use.

Can GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML be taken with other medications?

Since GATILOX DM Eye Drops are applied topically to the eyes, they are less likely to interact with oral medications. However, inform your doctor about all other medications you are using, especially other eye drops, topical NSAIDs (which may increase the risk of corneal healing problems), or other steroid-containing medicines (which could increase the risk of side effects like glaucoma).

What precautions should be taken while using GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML?

Before using, wash your hands thoroughly. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as a component (Benzalkonium chloride) can discolour soft lenses. If you use other eye drops, allow at least 5-10 minutes between applications. Prolonged use can lead to increased eye pressure or secondary infections, so eye pressure should be monitored if used for 10 days or more. Do not use this medicine if you have viral or fungal eye infections, ulcers, or pre-existing glaucoma.

What happens if a dose of GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra drops to make up for a missed dose.

How should GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML be stored?

Store GATILOX DM Eye Drops at room temperature, typically below 25°C or 30°C, in a cool and dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the reach of children and pets. Discard any unused medicine after the prescribed treatment duration or the expiry date.

Can I drive or operate machinery after using GATILOX DM EYE DROP 10 ML?

GATILOX DM Eye Drops may cause temporary blurring of vision after application. It is advisable to avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require clear vision until your vision has returned to normal.
