CIFRAN OZ

CIFRAN OZ is a combination antibiotic medication manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.

Composition CIFRAN OZ contains two active ingredients:

  • Ciprofloxacin (500mg): A fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA replication, preventing bacteria from multiplying and spreading.
  • Ornidazole (500mg): A nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent that damages the DNA of susceptible bacteria and parasites.

Uses CIFRAN OZ is primarily used to treat a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections. It is effective against mixed infections where both bacteria and parasites are present. Specific conditions it is prescribed for include:

  • Diarrhea and dysentery
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Respiratory tract infections (nose, throat, and lungs)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Vaginal and other bacterial/protozoal infections
  • Post-operative infections
  • Dental infections

Dosage and Administration CIFRAN OZ tablets are typically taken orally. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's overall health and response to the medication.

  • It is generally advised to consult a doctor for specific dosage and treatment duration.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water, and it can be taken with or without food.
  • It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance.
  • Avoid taking this medication at the same time as milk, yogurt, or other high-calcium products, as they can interfere with absorption. If taking antacids containing magnesium/aluminum, take CIFRAN OZ at least two hours before or after.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Weakness, unusual tiredness
  • Dry mouth, metallic taste
  • Joint pain

Serious side effects, though less common, can include:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue, shortness of breath)
  • Nerve damage (numbness, tingling)
  • Seizures, mental/mood changes (anxiety, confusion, depression)
  • Liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)
  • Tendonitis or tendon rupture
  • QT prolongation (irregular heartbeat)

Precautions

  • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, ornidazole, any other quinolone antibiotics, or any components of CIFRAN OZ.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Limited information is available regarding its safety during pregnancy, and it is generally advised to avoid it or consult a doctor. It may pass into breast milk and affect the baby, so breastfeeding mothers should consult a doctor.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 48 hours afterward, as it can increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and liver damage.
  • Driving and Machinery: CIFRAN OZ may cause dizziness or confusion, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these symptoms.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions, including kidney or liver problems, heart disorders (especially QT prolongation), epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, or a history of tendon problems.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking, as CIFRAN OZ can interact with certain drugs (e.g., antacids, NSAIDs, warfarin, theophylline, tizanidine).
  • Sun Exposure: Avoid excessive exposure to direct sunlight as it may increase photosensitivity.
  • Children: Not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age unless prescribed by a doctor.

Storage Store CIFRAN OZ in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cifran-OZ used for?

Cifran-OZ is a combination medication primarily used to treat a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections. These include gynecological infections, urinary tract infections, lung infections, abdominal infections (such as acute diarrhea and dysentery), bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, gastroenteritis, ear infections, gum infections, bone and joint infections, skin and soft tissue infections, prostate gland infections, and sexually transmitted infections. It is particularly effective for mixed infections where both bacteria and parasites are involved.

How does Cifran-OZ work?

Cifran-OZ contains two active ingredients: Ciprofloxacin and Ornidazole. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing their cells from dividing and repairing, specifically by interfering with their DNA replication process. Ornidazole is an antimicrobial and antiprotozoal agent that eliminates parasites and anaerobic bacteria by damaging their DNA, thus stopping their growth and spread. Together, they offer a synergistic effect against various infection-causing microorganisms.

What is the usual dosage for Cifran-OZ?

Cifran-OZ is a prescription medicine, and the exact dosage and duration of treatment are determined by your doctor based on the type and severity of your infection, as well as your overall health. It should be taken at a fixed time each day for optimal effectiveness. For most adult infections, a common dosage is one tablet twice daily for 7 to 14 days, although some infections may require a longer course. The tablet can be swallowed whole with water, with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of Cifran-OZ?

Common side effects of Cifran-OZ may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, dryness in the mouth, metallic taste, weakness, and drowsiness. Some individuals may experience more serious, though less common, side effects such as allergic reactions (manifesting as rashes, itching, swelling, or shortness of breath), nerve damage (numbness, tingling sensations), seizures, changes in mood or mental state, and liver problems. There is also a risk of developing tendinitis or tendon rupture. If any side effects worsen or if you experience an allergic reaction, contact your doctor immediately.

Is Cifran-OZ safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: Cifran-OZ is generally not recommended during pregnancy as animal studies have indicated potential harm to the developing baby, and human data is limited. Your doctor will assess the benefits against any potential risks before prescribing it if absolutely necessary. During Breastfeeding: Information on the use of Cifran-OZ during breastfeeding is limited, and it may pass into breast milk, potentially causing adverse effects in the baby, such as malformation of joints and cartilage. It is generally advised to avoid this medication while breastfeeding, and you should consult your doctor for alternatives or guidance on temporarily stopping breastfeeding.

Can Cifran-OZ be taken with other medications?

Cifran-OZ can interact with certain other medications. To ensure proper absorption, it should be taken at least two hours before or after antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, sucralfate, preparations containing zinc or iron, and certain anti-HIV drugs like didanosine. Caution is advised if you are taking theophylline, anticoagulants such as warfarin (due to an increased risk of bleeding), or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as these may increase certain side effects. Cifran-OZ should not be taken with tizanidine, a muscle relaxant. Always inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and vitamins you are currently taking.

What precautions should be taken while using Cifran-OZ?

It is crucial to complete the entire course of Cifran-OZ as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve earlier, to ensure the infection is fully eradicated and to prevent recurrence or the development of antibiotic resistance. Avoid consuming alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after completing the course, as it can increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and potential liver damage. Dairy products (like milk or yogurt) and other calcium-rich foods can interfere with the absorption of Cifran-OZ, so avoid consuming them within two hours before or after taking the medication. Since Cifran-OZ may cause dizziness and sleepiness, you should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these side effects. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney problems, heart disorders (especially a history of QT prolongation), seizure disorders, nerve-related conditions, muscle weakness (such as myasthenia gravis), diabetes, or tendon problems. Limit exposure to direct sunlight, as Cifran-OZ can increase sensitivity to the sun. Consult your doctor if your diarrhea persists for more than 48 hours, or if you notice blood in your stool or experience severe constipation.

What happens if a dose of Cifran-OZ is missed?

If you miss a dose of Cifran-OZ, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Cifran-OZ be stored?

Cifran-OZ tablets should be stored at room temperature, ideally below 30°C, in a cool, dark, and dry place. Keep the medication protected from light and moisture. Always ensure it is kept out of the sight and reach of children.
