Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about MUCARYL AB 600/100 MG (10 TAB) by GLENMARK LABORATORIES:

What is Mucaryl AB used for?

Mucaryl AB is primarily used to prevent and treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. It is also prescribed for bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis. The medicine helps manage respiratory issues by thinning mucus, reducing airway inflammation, and improving lung function.

How does Mucaryl AB work?

Mucaryl AB is a combination medicine containing Acebrophylline (100mg) and Acetylcysteine (600mg). Acebrophylline acts as a bronchodilator, relaxing the muscles in the airways and widening them, while also possessing mucolytic (mucus-thinning) and anti-inflammatory properties. Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic agent that thins and loosens phlegm (mucus) in the lungs, windpipe, and nose by breaking down its structure, making it easier to cough out. Together, these components help improve airflow and ease breathing.

What is the usual dosage of Mucaryl AB?

The daily dosage of Mucaryl AB should be strictly as prescribed by your doctor, as it can vary based on your medical condition and response to the medicine. It is typically taken once daily, often in the evening. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not chewed, crushed, or broken. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.

What are the possible side effects of Mucaryl AB?

Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, runny nose, dizziness, heartburn, stomach pain or discomfort, skin rash, drowsiness, headache, and cool and moist skin. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time. However, if any side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience severe symptoms like irregular heartbeat, chest pain, a severe allergic reaction, severe abdominal pain, signs of bleeding, or an unexpected worsening of breathing difficulty, you should seek immediate medical attention.

Is Mucaryl AB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Mucaryl AB is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy as it may be harmful to the developing baby. If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, consult your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits. If you are breastfeeding, it is advised to inform your doctor before taking this medicine, as it is unknown whether it passes into breast milk.

Can Mucaryl AB be taken with other medications?

Mucaryl AB may interact with certain other medications. It can interfere with the absorption of some antibiotics, such as tetracyclines (e.g., doxycycline) and quinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin), which should be taken 2 hours before or after Mucaryl AB. Concurrent use with methylxanthines (e.g., theophylline) may lead to an increased risk of adverse effects due to additive bronchodilator action. Always inform your doctor about all the medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, you are currently taking to avoid potential drug interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking Mucaryl AB?

Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to the components of Mucaryl AB. This medicine is not recommended for children under 14 years of age. Exercise caution if you have conditions such as hyperthyroidism, irregular heartbeats, heart failure, high blood pressure, viral infections, epilepsy (fits), active stomach or duodenal ulcers, or kidney or liver insufficiency. Regular monitoring of potassium levels may be recommended as Mucaryl AB can potentially cause low potassium in the blood. Avoid alcohol consumption as it may reduce the medicine's effectiveness, increase drowsiness, and cause stomach irritation. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery. Mucaryl AB is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks. If you are scheduled for urine ketone tests, inform your doctor as Acetylcysteine may affect the results.

What happens if a dose of Mucaryl AB is missed?

If you miss a dose of Mucaryl AB, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should Mucaryl AB be stored?

Store Mucaryl AB in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children. The recommended storage temperature is typically between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC.
