Description

TRIMACSART (10 TABLET) by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.

TRIMACSART is a combination medication manufactured by Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd., primarily prescribed for the management of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure.

Composition Each tablet of TRIMACSART contains a fixed-dose combination of three active ingredients:

  • Telmisartan (40 mg)
  • Amlodipine (5 mg)
  • Hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg)

Uses TRIMACSART is used for:

  • Effective management of hypertension (high blood pressure) when a single medication is insufficient.
  • Reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke.
  • Helping to prevent kidney damage caused by uncontrolled hypertension.
  • Managing heart failure symptoms and fluid retention (oedema) due to its diuretic properties.

Dosage and Administration TRIMACSART should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

  • The usual dosage is one tablet once daily.
  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • For consistency, it is best to take the tablet at the same time each day.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it.
  • As it contains a diuretic, avoid taking it within four hours of bedtime to prevent increased urination at night.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Headache and dizziness
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Diarrhea and flu-like symptoms
  • Sinusitis and upper respiratory tract infection
  • Muscle weakness and cramps
  • Dry mouth and increased thirst
  • Ankle swelling (peripheral edema) More severe, though rare, side effects can include low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalances, or kidney issues. Consult your doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: TRIMACSART is generally not recommended during pregnancy as it may cause harmful effects to the unborn baby. It is also not advised during breastfeeding as components can pass into breast milk.
  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney problems, heart disease (e.g., severe obstructive coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure), and diabetes. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, electrolytes, and blood sugar levels is essential.
  • Interactions: Avoid consuming alcohol as it may further lower blood pressure. Grapefruit or its juice should be avoided as it can increase the absorption of the medicine and worsen side effects. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
  • Driving: TRIMACSART may cause dizziness or visual disturbances; therefore, it is advised to avoid driving or operating machinery if these side effects occur.
  • Pediatric Use: Not recommended for use in children below 18 years of age due to lack of established safety and efficacy data.

Storage Store TRIMACSART tablets at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat. Keep them in their original packaging, tightly closed. Ensure they are kept out of the sight and reach of children and pets. It should be stored at 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC.

Frequently asked questions

TRIMACSART (10 TABLET) is a combination medication manufactured by Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd., primarily used to manage high blood pressure. It contains Telmisartan, Amlodipine, and Hydrochlorothiazide, which work together to relax blood vessels, improve blood flow, and reduce fluid retention in the body.

Here are some frequently asked questions about TRIMACSART:

What is TRIMACSART used for?

TRIMACSART is primarily used to treat hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. It helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of severe cardiovascular complications such as heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage. It can also be used to manage conditions associated with fluid overload due to its diuretic properties.

How does TRIMACSART work?

TRIMACSART combines three active ingredients: Telmisartan, Amlodipine, and Hydrochlorothiazide. Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that prevents the constriction of blood vessels, leading to their dilation and lower blood pressure. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes and widens blood vessels, further improving blood flow. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that helps the kidneys remove excess water and electrolytes (like sodium and chloride) from the body through urine, thereby reducing fluid volume and blood pressure.

What is the usual dosage for TRIMACSART?

The typical dosage is one tablet daily, but this will be determined by your doctor based on your specific medical condition and response to treatment. TRIMACSART can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day to maintain consistent medication levels. It's often recommended to avoid taking it within four hours of bedtime due to its diuretic effect, which can lead to increased urination and disturb sleep.

What are the possible side effects of TRIMACSART?

Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, and swelling in the ankles or feet. Other possible side effects are changes in taste, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, sinusitis, muscle weakness and cramps, dry mouth, and increased thirst. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time. However, if any side effects persist, worsen, or become bothersome, it is important to consult your doctor.

Is TRIMACSART safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

TRIMACSART is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as it may be harmful to the developing baby. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should consult your doctor immediately to discuss alternative blood pressure treatments. Caution is also advised during breastfeeding, as components of TRIMACSART can pass into breast milk and may affect the nursing infant. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks if it's considered necessary during breastfeeding.

Can TRIMACSART be taken with other medications?

TRIMACSART can interact with several other medications. For instance, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can reduce its blood pressure-lowering effect. Concomitant use with lithium may increase the risk of lithium toxicity. Taking it with other antihypertensive medications could heighten the risk of low blood pressure. Potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium should be used with caution, as TRIMACSART can increase blood potassium levels. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, and herbal preparations you are taking to avoid potential harmful interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking TRIMACSART?

Before starting TRIMACSART, inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing health conditions such as liver or kidney problems, diabetes, or gout. Regular monitoring of your blood pressure, kidney function, electrolyte levels, and blood sugar is essential during treatment. You should avoid consuming alcohol while taking TRIMACSART as it can exacerbate side effects. It's also recommended to limit salt intake and avoid grapefruit or its juice. Never stop taking TRIMACSART abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to a significant increase in blood pressure and potential heart complications.

What happens if a dose of TRIMACSART is missed?

If you miss a dose of TRIMACSART, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Consistent adherence to your medication schedule is key for effective blood pressure management.

How should TRIMACSART be stored?

TRIMACSART tablets should be stored at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep the medicine in its original packaging until it is time to take it. It should also be kept out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
