Description

Pyrigesic Tablet

Pyrigesic Tablet is a commonly used analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer) manufactured by East India Pharmaceutical Works Ltd.. It is widely available over-the-counter for various mild to moderate pain and fever conditions.

Composition

Pyrigesic Tablet primarily contains Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) as its active ingredient. It is available in different strengths, including 500 mg, 650 mg, and 1000 mg. Paracetamol works by inhibiting the production of certain chemical messengers called prostaglandins in the brain, which are responsible for causing pain and fever. It also acts on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center in the brain to reduce body temperature.

Uses

Pyrigesic Tablet is prescribed for a range of conditions involving pain and fever, including:

  • Fever of various origins, such as bacterial/viral infections and post-immunization fever.
  • Mild to moderate pain, including headaches, migraines, toothaches, earaches, and sore throats.
  • Muscle aches, joint pain (e.g., in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), back pain, and rheumatic pains.
  • Menstrual cramps (period pain).
  • Post-surgical or dental pain.
  • Cold and flu symptoms.

Dosage and Administration

Pyrigesic Tablet should be taken orally with a glass of water. It can be taken with or after meals to minimize stomach upset.

  • Adults: The usual adult dose for Pyrigesic 500 mg and 650 mg is generally one to two tablets every 4-6 or 6-8 hours as needed.
  • Maximum Dose: Do not exceed 4 grams (4000 mg) of paracetamol in 24 hours.
  • Maintain a gap of at least 4 hours between consecutive doses.
  • For specific conditions or strengths like Pyrigesic 1000 mg, dosage may vary, and it is recommended not to exceed the prescribed dose.

Side Effects

Pyrigesic Tablet is generally well-tolerated when taken at recommended doses. However, some individuals may experience side effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Nausea, stomach pain/upset, indigestion, vomiting, and mild skin rash.
  • Serious Side Effects (Rare but possible with overdose): Liver damage, allergic reactions (including skin rash, itching, blisters), and low blood cell count. Overdose symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite, and can lead to severe, life-threatening liver injury.

Precautions

  • Allergy: Do not take Pyrigesic Tablet if you are allergic to paracetamol or any of its ingredients.
  • Liver/Kidney Conditions: Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease. Dose adjustments may be required, and use is not recommended in severe liver disease.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Pyrigesic Tablet, as it can increase the risk of liver damage.
  • Other Paracetamol-containing Products: Avoid taking other medicines that contain paracetamol to prevent overdose and potential liver damage.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a physician before using during pregnancy or breastfeeding, though it is generally considered safe if prescribed and taken in recommended doses.
  • Children: Pyrigesic Tablet is generally not recommended for children below 6 or 12 years of age, depending on the specific strength, as safety and efficacy may not be established.
  • Malnutrition/Dehydration: Inform your doctor if you have an impaired nutritional state (e.g., anorexia, malnutrition, alcohol abuse) or are dehydrated.
  • Drug Interactions: Be cautious if taking medicines for nausea/vomiting (e.g., metoclopramide, domperidone), cholesterol-lowering medicines (e.g., cholestyramine), or antibiotics (e.g., chloramphenicol). Prolonged use with blood thinners like warfarin can lead to bleeding problems.

Frequently asked questions

What is Pyrigesic Tab used for?

Pyrigesic Tab is primarily used to reduce fever and treat mild to moderate pain. This includes common ailments such as headaches, migraines, toothaches, period pain, back pain, muscle pain, rheumatic pain, and discomfort associated with colds and flu. It can also be used for post-operative or dental pain.

How does Pyrigesic Tab work?

Pyrigesic Tab contains Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) as its active ingredient. It works by inhibiting the production of certain chemical messengers in the brain known as prostaglandins, which are responsible for pain and inflammation. Additionally, it affects an area of the brain that regulates body temperature, called the hypothalamic heat-regulating centre, thereby reducing fever.

What is the usual dosage for Pyrigesic Tab?

For adults and adolescents over 12 years, the usual single dose is typically 500 mg or 1000 mg, which can be repeated every 4-6 hours as needed. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 4000 mg (4 grams) in a 24-hour period. It is recommended to take the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food, and to maintain a gap of at least 4-6 hours between doses. It is crucial not to exceed the recommended dose, as this can lead to serious liver damage. Pyrigesic Tab is generally not recommended for children below 6 years of age.

What are the possible side effects of Pyrigesic Tab?

When taken at the recommended dosage, Pyrigesic Tab is generally well-tolerated and side effects are rare. However, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as nausea, stomach pain or upset, and dark-colored urine. Rarely, skin rash, itching, blisters, allergic reactions, or bruising may occur. Serious side effects, particularly with overdose, can include severe liver damage, kidney injury, decreased platelet count, and even coma. If you experience any persistent or severe side effects, or suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

Is Pyrigesic Tab safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pyrigesic Tab can generally be used during pregnancy if recommended by a doctor, typically for a short duration and at the lowest effective dose. When breastfeeding, paracetamol passes into breast milk in very small amounts and is considered safe to use if prescribed by a doctor, having negligible effects on the breastfed infant. Always consult a physician before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can Pyrigesic Tab be taken with other medications?

Pyrigesic Tab may interact with certain medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking. You should avoid taking Pyrigesic Tab with any other products that contain paracetamol to prevent overdose and potential liver damage. Caution is advised if you are taking medicines for nausea or vomiting (like metoclopramide or domperidone), cholesterol-lowering medicines (like cholestyramine), anti-infectives (like chloramphenicol), or blood thinners (like warfarin), as prolonged and regular use of paracetamol can increase the risk of bleeding problems with warfarin.

What precautions should be taken when using Pyrigesic Tab?

Do not exceed the recommended dose of Pyrigesic Tab to avoid the risk of serious liver damage. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medicine, as it can increase the risk of liver damage, especially in chronic alcoholics or those with liver problems. Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing liver or kidney disease, chronic malnutrition, anorexia, or are dehydrated, as dose adjustments or caution may be necessary. Pyrigesic Tab is not recommended for children below 6 years of age.

What happens if a dose of Pyrigesic Tab is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Maintain a gap of at least 4-6 hours between doses.

How should Pyrigesic Tab be stored?

Pyrigesic Tab should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep it out of sight and reach of children. Do not use expired medicine.
