Frequently asked questions
OVULOC TAB, manufactured by Serum Institute of India, is an oral contraceptive containing a combination of the hormones Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol. It is primarily used for birth control and also helps in managing certain menstrual conditions.
Here are some frequently asked questions about OVULOC TAB:
1. What is OVULOC TAB used for?
OVULOC TAB is primarily used for contraception to prevent pregnancy. It can also be prescribed to treat dysmenorrhea (irregular and painful periods), help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, and may lower the risk of ovarian cancer.
2. How does OVULOC TAB work?
OVULOC TAB is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) that works in multiple ways to prevent pregnancy. It contains two female sex hormones, Desogestrel (a progestin) and Ethinyl Estradiol (an estrogen). These hormones prevent the release of an egg from the ovaries (inhibition of ovulation), thicken the cervical mucus to make it difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and alter the lining of the uterus to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.
3. What is the usual dosage of OVULOC TAB?
Typically, one tablet of OVULOC TAB is taken orally once daily at approximately the same time each day, regardless of meals. It usually follows a 21-day regimen, where you take one active tablet for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day break during which a withdrawal bleed occurs. A new pack is started after the 7-day break. Some formulations might include 7 inactive/placebo tablets for a 28-day regimen. It is recommended to start the tablet on the first day of your menstrual cycle.
4. What are the possible side effects of OVULOC TAB?
Common side effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, weight changes (increase or decrease), acne, breast pain or tenderness, irregular uterine bleeding or spotting, and changes in mood or depression. Most of these side effects are temporary and resolve as your body adjusts to the medication. Severe side effects, such as signs of a blood clot (unexplained swelling and pain in limbs, shortness of breath, chest pain, severe headache, or changes in vision) or jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes), require immediate medical attention.
5. Is OVULOC TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
OVULOC TAB is not recommended for use if you are pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant. If pregnancy occurs, you should stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor immediately. It is also not recommended for use during breastfeeding, as it may reduce or alter the composition of breast milk. Your doctor may suggest alternative contraceptive methods if you are breastfeeding.
6. Can OVULOC TAB be taken with other medications?
OVULOC TAB can interact with several other medications, which may reduce its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. These include certain antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin, tetracyclines), anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine), HIV medications (e.g., ritonavir, nevirapine), some antifungal medications (e.g., griseofulvin, ketoconazole), and herbal supplements like St. John's Wort. Concomitant use with certain Hepatitis C drugs (e.g., ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, dasabuvir) should be avoided. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
7. What precautions should be taken while using OVULOC TAB?
It is crucial to avoid smoking, especially if you are over 35 years old, as it significantly increases the risk of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke. OVULOC TAB is not recommended for individuals with a history of blood clots, heart problems, stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, certain cancers (breast, uterus, or vagina), liver or kidney problems, or undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Caution is advised for patients with diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, anaemia, or migraines (it may increase headache frequency). This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or HIV. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels may be advised by your doctor during treatment.
8. What happens if a dose of OVULOC TAB is missed?
If you miss a dose by less than 12 hours, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember and continue with your usual schedule; contraceptive protection should not be reduced. If you are more than 12 hours late in taking a tablet (or have missed two or more), take the last missed tablet immediately (even if it means taking two tablets at once). Continue with your regular dosing schedule, but you must use a backup non-hormonal contraceptive method (like condoms) for at least the next 7 days. If unprotected intercourse occurred before the missed dose, there is a risk of pregnancy. Frequent missed doses can also lead to unexpected spotting or bleeding.
9. How should OVULOC TAB be stored?
OVULOC TAB should be stored in a cool and dry place, typically below 25°C or 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. It is important to keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
