ZOAMET PAED DROP

ZOAMET PAED DROP, manufactured by EAST INDIA PHARMACEUTICAL WORKS LIMITED, is a nasal decongestant specifically formulated for pediatric use. It provides effective relief from various forms of nasal congestion.

Composition

  • Active Ingredients: Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride 0.025% W/V

Uses

ZOAMET PAED DROP is primarily used to relieve nasal congestion (stuffy nose) caused by several conditions:

  • Common Cold and Flu: Helps to clear blocked nasal passages, making breathing easier.
  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Alleviates nasal congestion, runny nose, and discomfort associated with seasonal allergies.
  • Sinusitis: Reduces inflammation and swelling in the nasal passages, providing relief from sinus pressure and discomfort.
  • Post-Nasal Drip Treatment: Aids in reducing excess mucus and easing throat irritation and discomfort.

Dosage and Administration

ZOAMET PAED DROP is for intranasal use only.

  • Typical Guidance: Instil 1-3 drops into each nostril, usually twice daily (bid), or as directed by a physician.
  • Application: It is recommended to gently blow the nose to clear nasal fluids before application. Close one nostril while applying the medicine to the other, then sniff hard. Repeat for the other nostril.
  • Duration: Do not use for more than 10 days continuously without consulting a doctor, as prolonged use can worsen congestion (rebound congestion). Avoid exceeding the recommended dose.

Common side effects are generally mild and may include:

  • Irritation or dryness of the nasal mucosa (tissue lining the nasal cavity)
  • Local burning sensation
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Nose discomfort
  • Dry nose
  • Contact dermatitis and erythema (rare)

If side effects persist or worsen, medical attention should be sought.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about ZOAMET PAED DROP (Oxymetazoline).

What is ZOAMET PAED DROP used for?

ZOAMET PAED DROP is primarily used for the short-term symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion (stuffy nose) in children. This congestion can be caused by conditions such as the common cold, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), sinusitis, or other allergic conditions. It can also be used to aid in conditions like middle ear infection (otitis media) and Eustachian tube obstruction by decongesting the nasopharyngeal mucosa.

How does ZOAMET PAED DROP work?

The active ingredient, Oxymetazoline, is a nasal decongestant. It works by contracting and narrowing the small blood vessels in the linings of the nasal passages. This action reduces swelling and excessive mucus production, thereby opening up the nasal passages, improving airflow, and providing relief from congestion and discomfort.

What is the usual dosage for ZOAMET PAED DROP?

ZOAMET PAED DROP contains 0.025% w/v Oxymetazoline. It is specifically formulated for pediatric use. For newborns and infants aged below 1 year, it is used as directed by a physician. Generally, a specific number of drops are instilled into each nostril, as prescribed. It is crucial not to exceed the recommended dose and to avoid continuous use for more than 10 days without consulting a doctor, as prolonged use can worsen nasal congestion.

What are the possible side effects of ZOAMET PAED DROP?

Common side effects can include temporary burning, stinging, or dryness in the nose, irritation of the nasal mucosa, headache, and nausea. In rare cases, systemic sympathomimetic effects like hypertension, nervousness, dizziness, palpitation, or tachycardia might occur, especially with excessive use. Prolonged use (typically beyond 3-5 days) can also lead to "rebound congestion" or rhinitis medicamentosa, where nasal stuffiness returns or worsens.

Is ZOAMET PAED DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

While ZOAMET PAED DROP is a pediatric formulation, information on its active ingredient, Oxymetazoline, during pregnancy suggests it should be used only when clearly needed. It is unknown if Oxymetazoline passes into breast milk. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can ZOAMET PAED DROP be taken with other medications?

Care should be taken when using Oxymetazoline with certain medications. Severe interactions can occur with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) like isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine, potentially leading to a serious increase in blood pressure. Most MAOIs should be avoided for two weeks before using this medication. Concurrent use with tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants may also pose a risk. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications (prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products) your child is taking.

What precautions should be taken when using ZOAMET PAED DROP?

  • Do not use the drops for longer than 3-5 days to avoid rebound congestion.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dosage.
  • Avoid sharing the bottle with others to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Use with caution in children with certain health conditions such as heart/blood vessel disease, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or diabetes.
  • Parents or caregivers should seek medical attention if the child's condition worsens or does not improve.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If a dose of ZOAMET PAED DROP is missed, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should ZOAMET PAED DROP be stored?

ZOAMET PAED DROP should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. It should be kept out of the sight and reach of children and pets. To avoid contamination, discard any part-used bottles after the course of treatment, or if indicated, after 28 days of opening.
