METOSARTAN CH 50MG TABLET

Metosartan CH 50mg Tablet, also known as Metosartan CH 50 Tablet ER, is a combination medication manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd..

Composition Each tablet contains three active ingredients:

  • Chlorthalidone (12.5 mg)
  • Metoprolol Succinate (50 mg)
  • Telmisartan (40 mg)

Uses This medicine is primarily prescribed for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It helps to relax blood vessels, reduce the heart rate, and remove excess fluid and electrolytes from the body, thereby lowering blood pressure. It also reduces the risk of heart problems such as heart attack and stroke.

Dosage and Administration Metosartan CH 50mg Tablet should be taken orally as prescribed by a doctor. It can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day to maximize its benefits. Due to its diuretic component, it is advisable to take it at least 4 hours before bedtime to avoid frequent nighttime urination. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.

Side Effects Common side effects may include headache, nausea, dizziness, stomach upset, and weakness. Other potential side effects include increased uric acid levels in the blood, decreased magnesium and sodium levels, slow heart rate, blurred vision, constipation, and low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). If side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor.

Precautions Inform your doctor about any allergies to its components, diabetes, circulation problems, asthma, thyroid disorder, adrenal gland tumor, or heart/kidney/liver problems. It is not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy as it may affect the developing fetus. Caution is advised for breastfeeding mothers. Avoid alcohol as it can increase dizziness. Patients should rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to minimize dizziness (orthostatic hypotension). Avoid potassium-rich foods as it may increase blood potassium levels.

Storage Store Metosartan CH 50mg Tablet in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of the reach of children. It should be stored below 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

What is METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB used for?

METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). By effectively managing blood pressure, it helps reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular complications such as heart attack and stroke.

How does METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB work?

This medicine is a combination of three active ingredients: Telmisartan, Metoprolol succinate, and Chlorthalidone.

  • Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by relaxing blood vessels.
  • Metoprolol succinate is a beta-blocker that helps the heart pump more efficiently and allows blood to flow more smoothly.
  • Chlorthalidone is a diuretic (water pill) that helps lower blood pressure and reduce swelling by increasing the removal of excess fluid and electrolytes from the body through urine.

What is the usual dosage for METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB?

The dosage of METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB will be determined by your doctor, as it can vary based on your condition and how you respond to the medication. It should be taken by mouth, as directed by your doctor, preferably at the same time every day. You can take it with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, break, or chew it.

What are the possible side effects of METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB?

Common side effects can include dizziness, fatigue, or a slowed heartbeat, especially with excessive intake. You may also experience dizziness or lightheadedness when rising from a lying or sitting position (orthostatic hypotension).

More serious side effects that should be reported to your doctor immediately include:

  • Allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Signs of dehydration, like increased thirst, dry mouth, feeling faint, headache, or dark urine.
  • Gout (severe joint pain).
  • High or low potassium levels (muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, unusual weakness).
  • Kidney injury, indicated by a decrease in urine output or swelling of the ankles, hands, or feet.
  • Sudden eye pain or changes in vision, such as blurred vision or vision loss.

Is METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB is generally not recommended if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Medications containing Telmisartan (an ARB) can harm an unborn baby, particularly during the second and third trimesters, and may cause fetal injury or death. An effective form of birth control should be used to prevent pregnancy while on this medication. If you become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately as the medication may need to be stopped. Both Chlorthalidone and Metoprolol, components of this medicine, can pass into breast milk, and Telmisartan is also advised to be avoided during breastfeeding, especially for newborns or preterm infants.

Can METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you are taking. METOSARTAN CH 50MG TAB may interact with other medicines, including:

  • Other blood pressure medications, including beta-blockers and certain diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride).
  • Lithium, used for mental illnesses.
  • NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for pain and inflammation.
  • Potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, as this medicine can affect potassium levels.
  • Certain cholesterol-lowering medications like cholestyramine or colestipol (these should be taken several hours apart from METOSARTAN CH).

Your doctor may adjust dosages or recommend additional precautions if interactions are possible.
