Description

BREVIPIL 10 MG/ML ORAL SOLUTION 200 ML

Name

  • Brand Name: Brevipil Oral Solution
  • Common Name: Brivaracetam

Composition

Each ml of Brevipil Oral Solution contains 10 mg of Brivaracetam as the active ingredient. Other ingredients include sodium citrate, citric acid anhydrous, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), carmellose sodium, sucralose, sorbitol liquid (E420), glycerol (E422), raspberry flavour (propylene glycol (E1520) 90 % - 98 %), and purified water.

Uses

Brevipil Oral Solution is an anti-epileptic (anticonvulsant) medication primarily used to manage epilepsy by controlling seizures. It is indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures (seizures affecting only one part of the brain) in adults and children aged one month and older. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other anti-epileptic drugs. Brivaracetam works by binding to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, which helps to regulate abnormal neuronal electrical activity and prevent the spread of electrical signals that trigger seizures.

Dosage and Administration

Take Brevipil Oral Solution exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Shake the solution thoroughly before each use.
  • Measure the precise dosage with a measuring cup.
  • It can be taken with or without food, but it's often advised to take it at a fixed time each day for optimal benefit.
  • Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly, as this can worsen seizures. Your doctor will determine the correct dose and duration based on age, body weight, and disease condition.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about BREVIPIL 10 MG/ML ORAL SOLUTION:

What is BREVIPIL Oral Solution used for?

BREVIPIL Oral Solution, containing Brivaracetam, is an anti-epileptic medicine primarily used to treat partial-onset seizures (also known as focal seizures) in individuals with epilepsy. It can be used alone or in combination with other anti-epileptic drugs, for adults and children aged 1 month and older.

How does BREVIPIL Oral Solution work?

BREVIPIL Oral Solution works by binding to a specific protein in the brain called synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A). This action helps to suppress abnormal electrical activity in the nerve cells of the brain and prevents the excessive spread of electrical signals that trigger seizures.

What is the usual dosage for BREVIPIL Oral Solution?

The dosage of BREVIPIL Oral Solution is determined by your doctor based on factors like age, body weight, and the severity of the condition. For adults (16 years and older), a typical starting dosage is 50 mg twice daily, which may be adjusted from 25 mg twice daily up to a maximum of 100 mg twice daily (200 mg per day). For children from 1 month to less than 16 years, the dosage is weight-based. It's crucial to follow your doctor's instructions precisely, as doses may be adjusted gradually.

What are the possible side effects of BREVIPIL Oral Solution?

Common side effects can include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Other possible side effects may involve behavioral changes such as agitation, aggressive behavior, irritability, anxiety, or even thoughts of self-harm. Most common side effects tend to occur in the first few weeks and often lessen as the body adjusts. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, or any unusual changes in mood or behavior, you should contact your doctor.

Is BREVIPIL Oral Solution safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

BREVIPIL Oral Solution is generally not recommended during pregnancy, as its effects on pregnancy and the unborn baby are not fully known. Animal studies suggest potential harm to a developing fetus. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding, as Brivaracetam may pass into breast milk, and its effect on the breastfed infant is unknown. It is important to consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding to discuss the risks and benefits.

Can BREVIPIL Oral Solution be taken with other medications?

BREVIPIL Oral Solution can interact with certain other medications. For example, some anti-epileptic drugs like carbamazepine and phenytoin, or the antibiotic rifampin, can affect Brivaracetam levels or increase side effects. Taking it with CNS depressants like opioids or antidepressants can increase drowsiness and sedation. Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements (like St. John's wort), and vitamins.

What precautions should be taken with BREVIPIL Oral Solution?

Avoid sudden discontinuation of BREVIPIL Oral Solution, as this can worsen seizures or lead to status epilepticus; doses should be gradually reduced under medical supervision. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you, as it can cause sleepiness, dizziness, or impaired coordination. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase drowsiness. Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or a history of depression or suicidal thoughts, as these conditions may require dose adjustments or close monitoring.

What happens if a dose of BREVIPIL Oral Solution is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects. Taking the medicine regularly as directed is important to prevent seizures.

How should BREVIPIL Oral Solution be stored?

BREVIPIL Oral Solution should be stored below 25°C or 30°C, in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use and out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date. The oral liquid should not be frozen, and any unused oral liquid should be discarded 5 months after opening the bottle for the first time.
