Description

FORACORT FORTE INHALER by CIPLA LTD.

FORACORT FORTE INHALER is a combination medication designed for the long-term management of respiratory conditions.

  • Name: Foracort Forte Inhaler

  • Composition: Each actuation contains Budesonide 400 mcg and Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate 12 mcg. Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways, while Formoterol is a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (LABA) that works by relaxing and widening the airway muscles, making breathing easier.

  • Uses: This inhaler is primarily prescribed for the regular maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It helps prevent and alleviate symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness associated with these conditions. It is not intended for the relief of sudden or acute asthma or COPD attacks.

  • Dosage and Administration: The typical maintenance dosage for adults is 2 inhalations per day (e.g., one inhalation twice daily, or two inhalations in the morning or evening). An additional inhalation can be taken as needed in response to symptoms, but generally, not more than 6 inhalations on any single occasion or 8 inhalations daily are recommended. After each use, it is crucial to rinse the mouth with water and spit it out to prevent fungal infections.

  • Side Effects: Common side effects may include fungal infection in the mouth (oral thrush), headache, sore throat, hoarse voice, upper respiratory tract infection, cough, back pain, increased heart rate, and trembling. Serious but rare side effects like paradoxical bronchospasm can occur.

  • Precautions: FORACORT FORTE INHALER is not recommended for children below 6 to 12 years of age due to insufficient safety data. Patients should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hypokalemia (low potassium), glaucoma, cataracts, osteoporosis, seizures, or problems with the thyroid, heart, liver, or adrenal glands. Abrupt discontinuation of the medicine should be avoided as it may worsen symptoms.

  • Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat, ideally between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Foracort Forte Inhaler used for?

Foracort Forte Inhaler is primarily used to treat and prevent symptoms associated with asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It helps manage symptoms such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness. It is intended for regular maintenance therapy and not for acute, sudden attacks.

How does Foracort Forte Inhaler work?

Foracort Forte Inhaler is a combination medication containing Budesonide and Formoterol. Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways. Formoterol is a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (bronchodilator) that relaxes and widens the muscles in the airways, making it easier to breathe. Together, they provide both anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator actions.

What is the usual dosage for Foracort Forte Inhaler?

The dosage of Foracort Forte Inhaler is individual and should be adjusted based on the severity of the condition and as directed by a doctor. For adults (18 years and older), a common recommended maintenance dosage is 1-2 inhalations twice daily, with some patients potentially requiring two inhalations twice daily. The maximum daily dose for maintenance is typically not more than 8 inhalations, although up to 12 inhalations may be used for a limited period under medical advice. After achieving control, the dose may be titrated to the lowest effective dose, possibly once daily. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions for dosage and timing.

What are the possible side effects of Foracort Forte Inhaler?

Commonly reported side effects include fungal infection in the mouth (oral thrush), headache, sore throat, hoarse voice, upper respiratory tract infection, flu-like symptoms, cough, back pain, increased heart rate, trembling, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, and dizziness. To reduce the risk of oral thrush, it is recommended to rinse your mouth with water and spit it out (without swallowing) or brush your teeth after each use. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Foracort Forte Inhaler safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, Foracort Forte Inhaler is generally considered safe if prescribed, but should only be used when the benefits outweigh the potential risks, and under the close monitoring of a doctor. For breastfeeding mothers, it is probably safe to use, as limited human data suggests the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby, but a doctor's consultation is advised.

Can Foracort Forte Inhaler be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking to prevent potential interactions. Certain medications may interact with Foracort Forte Inhaler. For example, concomitant use with certain antifungals (like Ketoconazole) or HIV medications (like Ritonavir) should be avoided as they may alter the effects of this medicine. Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol) can weaken its effects. Diuretics may cause decreased potassium levels. Concurrent use with other long-acting beta2-agonists is generally not recommended due to an increased risk of overdose.

What precautions should be taken?

Do not use Foracort Forte Inhaler if you are allergic to any of its components. It is not recommended for children below 6 years of age. Inform your doctor if you have conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, low potassium levels (hypokalaemia), glaucoma, cataracts, osteoporosis, immune system problems, thyroid problems, liver or heart problems, or if you have infections like chickenpox or measles. Regular monitoring of potassium levels is recommended. Do not stop using the inhaler suddenly, even if symptoms improve, without consulting your doctor, as this can worsen your condition.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Foracort Forte Inhaler be stored?

Foracort Forte Inhaler should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat, typically below 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets.
