Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet is primarily prescribed for:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): To alleviate symptoms of depression by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (dopamine, norepinephrine, and potentially serotonin) in the brain that regulate mood.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): For the prevention of depressive episodes associated with seasonal changes, typically occurring in autumn and winter.
  • Smoking Cessation: To aid individuals in quitting smoking by reducing nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms. The medication may also be used for other mental/mood disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or depressive phases of bipolar disorder, as well as binge eating disorder, when prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Dosage and Administration

  • Bupron SR 150 mg tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or cut, as this can lead to an increased risk of side effects.
  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • For depression, the typical starting dose is 150 mg once daily in the morning for 3 days. The dose may then be increased to 300 mg per day, administered as 150 mg twice daily, with at least 8 hours between doses.
  • For smoking cessation, treatment should begin before the patient's planned quit day, usually for about a week. The initial dose is one 150 mg tablet per day for 3 days, then increased to one 150 mg tablet twice daily, with at least 8 hours between doses. The target quit date should be within the first 2 weeks of treatment, which typically continues for 7 to 12 weeks.
  • Do not stop taking this medication abruptly, as it may worsen symptoms or lead to withdrawal reactions.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about BUPRON SR 150 MG TABLET:

What is Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet used for?

Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet is primarily used to treat depression, including major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It is also prescribed to help people quit smoking by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

How does Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet work?

Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet, containing bupropion, works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemical messengers in the brain, specifically dopamine and norepinephrine. This action helps to regulate mood, alleviate symptoms of depression, and in the case of smoking cessation, its exact mechanism is not fully understood but it helps reduce nicotine cravings.

What is the usual dosage of Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet?

For depression, the typical starting dosage for Bupropion SR is 150 mg once daily. After three days, the dose may be increased to 150 mg twice daily, with doses taken at least 8 hours apart. For smoking cessation, treatment usually begins with 150 mg once daily for the first three days, then increases to 150 mg twice daily, with doses at least 8 hours apart. Do not crush, chew, or divide the tablets. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration based on your condition and response to treatment.

What are the possible side effects of Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet?

Common side effects can include dry mouth, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping (insomnia), increased sweating, anxiety, agitation, constipation, weight loss, and shaking (tremor). More serious, but less common, side effects include seizures, high blood pressure, and severe allergic reactions. If any side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience serious side effects like a fast heartbeat or mental/mood changes, inform your doctor immediately.

Is Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet should be used with caution and only if clearly needed, as it is not definitively known if the SR and XL forms are safe to take. Untreated mental/mood problems during pregnancy can also pose serious risks.

When breastfeeding, bupropion passes into breast milk in low levels, and while it's generally not expected to cause adverse effects, limited information exists regarding its use in newborns. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks for both you and your child.

Can Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet be taken with other medications?

Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet can interact with various medications. It should not be taken with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) due to the risk of serious side effects, including dangerously high blood pressure. Avoid MAOIs for two weeks before and after treatment with bupropion. It can also interact with other antidepressants, antipsychotics, medications that lower the seizure threshold (like tramadol or Adderall), and sedatives, increasing the risk of side effects like seizures. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while taking Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet?

Precautions include avoiding alcohol, as it can increase the risk of seizures and dizziness. This medication can also cause dizziness and sleepiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. It should be used with caution if you have a history of seizures, eating disorders (such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa), severe head injury, brain tumor, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended. Do not stop taking the medication abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can worsen symptoms or cause withdrawal reactions.

What happens if a dose of Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not double the dose to catch up, as this can increase the risk of side effects, especially seizures. Ensure there are at least 8 hours between doses for sustained-release formulations.

How should Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet be stored?

Store Bupron SR 150 mg Tablet at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets. An empty tablet shell may appear in your stool, which is normal and does not mean the medication was not absorbed.
