Description
WEGOVY FLXT 0.5MG
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription medication available in a FlexTouch pre-filled pen delivery system, with this particular presentation containing 0.5 mg of semaglutide per dose. Wegovy is developed by Novo Nordisk.
-
Composition
- Active Ingredient: Semaglutide. Semaglutide is a human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue, produced using recombinant DNA technology.
- Inactive Ingredients: Disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment), sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment), and water for injection.
-
Uses Wegovy is prescribed as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for:
- Weight Management: Chronic weight management in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) or overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related comorbidity (e.g., high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol).
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: To lower the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (e.g., heart attack, stroke, cardiovascular death) in adults with established cardiovascular disease who are obese or overweight.
- Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH): For treating MASH (formerly NASH) in adults.
-
Dosage and Administration Wegovy is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. The 0.5 mg dose is typically part of a gradual dose escalation schedule designed to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Patients usually start at 0.25 mg weekly for 4 weeks, increasing to 0.5 mg weekly for the next 4 weeks, before further increases to maintenance doses of 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg once weekly. Injections can be given in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, rotating the injection site each time.

Storage Unopened Wegovy pens should be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) in their original carton to protect from light, until the expiration date. Do not freeze. Once an opened pen is in use, it can be stored at room temperature (46°F to 86°F or 8°C to 30°C) or in the refrigerator for up to 28 days (or 6 weeks according to some sources) but must be discarded after this period or if frozen or exposed to high temperatures. Used pens and needles should be disposed of in a sharps container.
Frequently asked questions
Here are frequently asked questions about WEGOVY FLXT 0.5MG:
What is Wegovy used for?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription medicine used for long-term weight management in adults who are obese (BMI of 30 or higher) or overweight (BMI of 27 or higher) and have at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. It is also used to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke in overweight or obese adults with heart disease, and to treat Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH). It should be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy contains semaglutide, which is a GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) receptor agonist. It mimics a natural gut hormone that regulates appetite, slows down stomach emptying, and helps you feel full for longer, leading to reduced calorie intake and significant weight loss over time.
What is the usual dosage of Wegovy?
Wegovy is administered as a once-weekly injection. The starting dose is typically 0.25 mg, which is gradually increased every four weeks until a maintenance dose of 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg once weekly is reached. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose escalation schedule and maintenance dose for you.
What are the possible side effects of Wegovy?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, headache, and fatigue. These often improve as your body adjusts to the medication. More serious side effects, though less common, can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, thyroid tumors (including a boxed warning about potential thyroid cancer risk), kidney problems, increased heart rate, and low blood sugar (especially when taken with other diabetes medications).
Is Wegovy safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Wegovy is not recommended for use during pregnancy, as animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. You should stop using Wegovy at least two months before you plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Wegovy passes into breast milk, so caution is advised, and your healthcare provider should be consulted if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
Can Wegovy be taken with other medications?
You should inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Wegovy can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if taken with insulin or sulfonylurea drugs, requiring potential dose adjustments of these medications. It may also affect the absorption of other oral medications and is not recommended for use with other GLP-1 receptor agonists. Interactions with blood thinners, thyroid medication, diuretics, and birth control pills have also been noted.
What precautions should be taken before using Wegovy?
Before starting Wegovy, inform your doctor about any medical conditions you have, particularly a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal problems, diabetic retinopathy, kidney disease, or gallbladder issues. Also, discuss any history of suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Inform your healthcare provider if you have planned surgeries or procedures, as Wegovy can delay stomach emptying.
What happens if a dose of Wegovy is missed?
If you miss a dose and your next scheduled dose is more than 5 days away (or 48 hours in some guidelines), take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it has been longer than 5 days (or less than 48 hours until the next dose), skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regularly scheduled day. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose. If you miss multiple doses, consult your doctor on how to restart or adjust your treatment.
How should Wegovy be stored?
Wegovy pens should be stored in the refrigerator, between 2°C and 8°C (36°F to 46°F), in their original carton to protect from light. Do not freeze Wegovy. If necessary, a pen can be stored at room temperature (8°C to 30°C or 46°F to 86°F) for up to 28 days, but it cannot be put back in the refrigerator after being stored at room temperature.
