Description
DUPROST CAP
Name:
- Brand Name: DUPROST CAP
- Common Name: Dutasteride Capsules
Composition: Each soft gelatin capsule contains Dutasteride 0.5 mg.
Uses: DUPROST CAP is primarily used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause urinary problems such as difficulty in urination, frequent or urgent need to urinate, weak urine flow, and incomplete emptying of the bladder. By shrinking the enlarged prostate, DUPROST CAP helps to alleviate these symptoms, improve urine flow, reduce the risk of urinary blockage, and may lower the chance of needing prostate surgery. It may also be used to treat male pattern hair loss.
Dosage and Administration: The recommended dose of DUPROST is one 0.5 mg capsule taken orally once a day. The capsule should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, split, or dissolved, as Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin. It can be administered with or without food, preferably at a fixed daily time. It may take 3 to 6 months to see the full beneficial effect of DUPROST CAP.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Reduced libido (sex drive), impotence (erectile dysfunction), breast tenderness, breast enlargement (gynecomastia), ejaculation disorder, decreased sperm count, dizziness, diarrhea, headache, stuffy or runny nose (nasopharyngitis).
- Serious Side Effects: Increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer (rare), allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing trouble). If side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor.
Precautions:
- DUPROST CAP is contraindicated for use in women, especially those who are pregnant or could become pregnant, and in pediatric patients.
- Dutasteride is absorbed through the skin and can cause fetal harm. Pregnant women or women who could become pregnant should not handle leaking capsules. If contact occurs, the area should be washed immediately with soap and water.
- Men being treated with DUPROST CAP should not donate blood until at least 6 months after their last dose to prevent potential exposure to pregnant women through blood transfusion.
- Use with caution in patients with liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed. It is not recommended for patients with severe liver or kidney disease.
- DUPROST CAP may cause dizziness, which can impair driving and operating machinery.
- Avoid alcohol consumption as it can aggravate orthostatic hypotension.
- Interactions may occur with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, ketoconazole, verapamil, diltiazem, cimetidine, ciprofloxacin), which can increase Dutasteride blood concentrations.
Storage: Store at 25°C or below 30°C in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiry date.
Frequently asked questions
Duprost Capsule, manufactured by Cipla, contains Dutasteride as its active ingredient and is primarily used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It is not indicated for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Here are some frequently asked questions about Duprost Capsule:
What is Duprost Capsule used for?
Duprost Capsule is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men, which is an enlargement of the prostate gland. It helps alleviate associated urinary symptoms such as difficulty in urination, frequent urges to urinate, a weak urine stream, and incomplete emptying of the bladder.
How does Duprost Capsule work?
Duprost Capsule contains Dutasteride, which is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It works by blocking an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for prostate growth. By reducing DHT levels, it helps to shrink the enlarged prostate gland and improve urinary symptoms.
What is the usual dosage for Duprost Capsule?
The typical adult dosage for Duprost Capsule is 0.5 milligram (mg) taken once a day. It can be taken with or without food, but it's recommended to take it at a fixed time for optimal results.
What are the possible side effects of Duprost Capsule?
Common side effects can include low sexual drive (decreased libido), erectile dysfunction (impotence), ejaculation disorder, breast enlargement (gynecomastia), breast tenderness in males, and dizziness. If any side effects persist or worsen, it's advisable to consult your doctor.
Is Duprost Capsule safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No, Duprost Capsule is not safe for women, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is specifically designed for men. Pregnant women should not come into contact with this medicine, as it can be absorbed through the skin and may cause birth defects in male fetuses. It is also unsafe for use during breastfeeding.
Can Duprost Capsule be taken with other medications?
Duprost Capsule can sometimes be combined with other medications like tamsulosin for enhanced symptom relief in BPH. However, it may interact with certain other drugs. For instance, antifungals (like itraconazole, ketoconazole), some blood pressure-lowering medicines (like verapamil, diltiazem), antivirals (like ritonavir), immune-suppressing medicines, and certain antibiotics (like clarithromycin, erythromycin) may interact with Duprost Capsule. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken while using Duprost Capsule?
Duprost Capsule should not be used by women or children. Women of childbearing potential should avoid handling the capsules, as the active ingredient can be absorbed through the skin. Patients should not donate blood for at least six months after their last dose to prevent the drug from being passed to pregnant women through transfusion. Also, inform your doctor if you have any liver problems or if you are undergoing a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test, as Duprost Capsule can affect PSA levels.
What happens if a dose of Duprost Capsule is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Duprost Capsule be stored?
