Description
MOXOFT LP EYE DROP (5 ML)
MOXOFT LP Eye Drop is a prescription ophthalmic solution manufactured by Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd..
-
Composition Each ml contains Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride equivalent to Moxifloxacin 5 mg (0.5% w/v) and Loteprednol Etabonate 5 mg (0.5% w/v). It also contains Benzalkonium Chloride Solution 0.02% v/v as a preservative.
-
Uses MOXOFT LP Eye Drop is primarily used to treat bacterial eye infections accompanied by inflammation. This combination medicine is prescribed for conditions such as bacterial conjunctivitis, inflammatory eye conditions responsive to steroids, and to reduce post-operative inflammation and prevent bacterial infections after ocular surgery. Moxifloxacin acts as a broad-spectrum antibiotic to kill bacteria, while Loteprednol, a corticosteroid, reduces inflammation, redness, and swelling. It is effective against bacterial infections but not against viral or fungal infections.
-
Dosage and Administration MOXOFT LP Eye Drop is for ophthalmic use only. The typical dosage involves instilling one to two drops into the affected eye(s) as advised by a doctor. Dosage and duration vary based on the severity of the condition and patient response. Patients should wash their hands before application and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment to ensure complete eradication of the infection. Use the solution within one month after opening the vial.
-
Side Effects Common side effects may include a burning or stinging sensation upon instillation, eye irritation, discomfort, redness in the eyes, blurred vision, superficial punctate keratitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, sub-conjunctival hemorrhage, tearing, and increased intraocular pressure. Prolonged use can lead to more serious side effects such as optic nerve damage, cataract formation, and delayed wound healing.
-
Precautions Do not use if allergic to Loteprednol, Moxifloxacin, or any other ingredients. This medicine may cause temporary blurring of vision, so avoid driving or operating machinery until vision clears. Inform your doctor if you wear contact lenses, as Benzalkonium chloride (a preservative) may discolor soft contact lenses; it's generally advised not to wear contact lenses during an eye infection. Prolonged use should be avoided as it can increase intraocular pressure and the risk of secondary infections. It is not recommended for viral or fungal eye infections. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before use. Safety and efficacy in children under 1 year have not been established, and it is generally not recommended for children under 18 years.
-
Storage Store MOXOFT LP Eye Drop in a cool and dry place, protected from light, at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep the medicine away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and out of reach of children. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use to prevent contamination.
Frequently asked questions
What is MOXOFT LP Eye Drop used for?
MOXOFT LP Eye Drop is primarily used to treat inflammatory eye conditions that respond to steroids, especially when there's a risk of bacterial infection. This includes managing inflammation and preventing bacterial infections after eye surgeries, as well as treating bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial bacterial eye infections. It helps reduce symptoms like redness, itching, swelling, and discomfort in the eye.
How does MOXOFT LP Eye Drop work?
MOXOFT LP Eye Drop contains two active ingredients: Moxifloxacin and Loteprednol. Moxifloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting essential enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) in bacteria, which are crucial for their growth and survival, thus killing the bacteria and preventing infection. Loteprednol is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by blocking the production of prostaglandins, which are chemical messengers responsible for causing redness, swelling, and itching in the eye.
What is the usual dosage for MOXOFT LP Eye Drop?
The specific dosage for MOXOFT LP Eye Drop is determined by your doctor based on the severity and type of your eye condition. Typically, the usual dosage for adults is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) two to three times daily. For bacterial conjunctivitis, a common regimen is 1 drop in the affected eye three times a day for 7 days. It is crucial to strictly follow your doctor's prescribed dosage and complete the entire course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully eradicated and to prevent recurrence.
What are the possible side effects of MOXOFT LP Eye Drop?
Common side effects may include eye irritation, discomfort, stinging, burning sensation upon instillation, temporary blurred vision, superficial punctate keratitis (inflammation of the cornea), increased intraocular pressure (with prolonged use), dry eye, itching, redness, and a foreign body sensation in the eye. Less common or rare side effects can include allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling), corneal problems, changes in taste, nausea, headache, dizziness, and sensitivity to light. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve on their own. However, if you experience any serious side effects or if your symptoms worsen, you should consult your doctor immediately.
Is MOXOFT LP Eye Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
The safety of MOXOFT LP Eye Drop during pregnancy has not been definitively established. It should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks, and always under the guidance of a doctor. Animal studies have shown potential harmful effects on the developing baby.
Regarding breastfeeding, it is unknown if the medication is excreted in human milk. Caution is advised, and some sources suggest it is probably unsafe or contraindicated during breastfeeding as it may pass into breastmilk and potentially harm the baby. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can MOXOFT LP Eye Drop be taken with other medications?
Since MOXOFT LP Eye Drop is for topical use in the eye, it is less likely to have significant systemic drug interactions. However, you should inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking, including other eye drops or ointments. If you are using multiple eye medications, it is recommended to wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applications to prevent them from washing each other out. Specific interactions to note include corticosteroids (like prednisone) or immunosuppressants (like cyclosporine), which might enhance effects or risks. Certain HIV medications like ritonavir and cobicistat may also increase the effect of MOXOFT LP Eye Drop.
What precautions should be taken when using MOXOFT LP Eye Drop?
Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the eye drops. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelids, or any other surface to maintain sterility and prevent contamination. Do not stop using the eye drops prematurely, even if your symptoms improve, as this can lead to a return of the infection.
This medicine is not effective against viral (e.g., herpes simplex, vaccinia, varicella) or fungal eye infections, or mycobacterial infections. If you experience temporary blurred vision after instilling the drops, avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision clears. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. It's generally advised not to wear contact lenses if you have an active eye infection.
Prolonged use of corticosteroid-containing eye drops like MOXOFT LP can increase the pressure inside your eyes (intraocular pressure), potentially leading to glaucoma, optic nerve damage, or cataract formation. If you use the drops for more than 10 days, your doctor may recommend frequent vision tests to monitor eye pressure. Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, a damaged cornea, eye ulcers, pus discharge from the eye, diabetes, or liver/kidney problems. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to moxifloxacin, loteprednol, or any other ingredients in the eye drop.
What happens if a dose of MOXOFT LP Eye Drop is missed?
If you miss a dose of MOXOFT LP Eye Drop, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should MOXOFT LP Eye Drop be stored?
Store MOXOFT LP Eye Drop at room temperature, ideally below 30°C. Protect it from direct sunlight and high humidity, and do not freeze the medication. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use to prevent contamination. Always keep the medicine out of the reach of children. Once opened, the solution should generally be used within one month.
