Frequently asked questions

NIZRAL 2% SOLUTION 50 ML by A. MENARINI INDIA PVT. LTD. is an antifungal medication containing ketoconazole. It is used to treat various fungal and yeast infections of the skin and scalp.

What is Nizral 2% Solution used for?

Nizral 2% Solution is primarily used to treat fungal skin infections such as athlete's foot, ringworm, jock itch, and yeast infections. It is also effective in managing conditions like seborrheic dermatitis (a dry or oily scaling of the scalp and other parts of the body), dandruff, and tinea versicolor (characterized by white to brown patches on the body).

How does Nizral 2% Solution work?

Nizral 2% Solution contains Ketoconazole, an antifungal agent. It works by inhibiting the growth of fungi and yeasts by damaging their cell membranes, which are essential for their survival. This disruption leads to increased membrane permeability and leakage of cellular contents, ultimately killing the fungi and clearing the infection.

What is the usual dosage and how should I apply it?

The dosage and duration of Nizral 2% Solution should be as prescribed by your doctor. It is for external use on the hair and skin only. To apply, clean and dry the affected area. For scalp applications, wet your hair and scalp thoroughly, then apply a sufficient amount to create a lather. Gently massage it over the affected area and leave it for 3-5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. It is important to continue using the medicine for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning. For certain conditions like dermatitis and dandruff, it might be used twice weekly for 2-4 weeks. For tinea, it could be once daily for a maximum of 5 days, but this can vary.

What are the possible side effects of Nizral 2% Solution?

Nizral 2% Solution is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects at the application site include mild skin irritation, burning sensation, itching, redness, dryness, or peeling. In rare cases, more severe reactions like allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat which may cause trouble in swallowing or breathing), severe irritation, reddening, peeling, or blistering of the skin may occur. If these occur, discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately. Other less common side effects can include abnormal hair loss or thinning, changes in hair texture or color.

Is Nizral 2% Solution safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Nizral 2% Solution is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, especially since it is a topical solution with minimal systemic absorption. However, it is always advisable to consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, to weigh potential benefits against any possible risks. If applied to the breast while breastfeeding, care should be taken to avoid accidental ingestion by the baby.

Can Nizral 2% Solution be taken with other medications?

Since Nizral 2% Solution is applied externally, it is less likely to interact with other medicines. However, it is always recommended to inform your doctor about all other medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, or topical preparations you are using to avoid potential interactions. If you are using any steroidal creams, lotions, or ointments, your doctor may advise gradually reducing their use over 2-3 weeks while starting Nizral 2% Solution to prevent a worsening of the underlying condition.

What precautions should be taken?

Avoid contact of Nizral 2% Solution with the eyes, nose, mouth, or open wounds, as it may cause irritation. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not cover the treated area with tight bandages unless advised by your doctor, as this may increase absorption and side effects. It may also make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, so use sunscreen or cover treated areas when outdoors. Do not use on broken or severely damaged skin unless instructed by a doctor. Inform your doctor if you have allergies or sensitive skin.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Nizral 2% Solution, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double amount to make up for a missed dose.

How should it be stored?

Nizral 2% Solution should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from moisture and heat, and away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets. It should be stored below 30°C.
